yes, please do...time to open the scope of benching...
this form of benching is for speed not quality. once you go tweaking a gaming benchmark..it's no longer a quality one, but a speed one and then falls under synthetic.
this is why i asked "what types of benches they we're doing"

nice set of runs you have don, in the link you provided..shows a wide variation of sorts. great work. sits right up there with vicious

    *snickering hella hard*
but umm...did i miss something? with everyone of the top laptop benching experts benching games and both cards....none seem to agree with those findings... :D
    except for dirt 2

    side note:
the 480/470s are looking like they may be legit..go nvidia! they beat the 5870 at heaven benchmark..(so nvidia says... :))

I don't know what to tell you. I ran the tests and posted the results. I've been benchmarking hardware for a very long time. :D

There are a lot of 'this slaughters that' comments in these threads but not a lot of numbers.

Dirt 2 got patched with SLI support a few days ago, so those results are probably a lot closer now too.

sort of poking fun at cha lewdvig, because you have been around for quite a long time.

but on the games...we tested them all. the person to ask..dondadah. he can bring it all up in like 10 seconds...lol

but in all out test..280m's lost in the end once the ati cards got unlocked.
and of curse we all know...nvidia sucks when it comes to running any form of AA/AF....hopefully this will change in the next few months.

Mine were tested out of the box with no modifications (except drivers but that hardly counts). As fun as it is to mod, not everyone does it.

With overclocking and firmware mods you can always squeeze a bit more out.

Those graphs are rather misleading Lewdvig....if you dont look at the scale first it makes the GTX 280m's seem twice as fast where they really only lead by a handful of fps

guys i need your expertise here

my qx9300 used to work ok with gaming with the cpu set at 3.175ghz. its three days now that i cant play games with more than 3.07ghz. at least i get blue screen after a while while i am in game. This never happened before until 3.175ghz..

    what happened?

does your system behave properly on battery and what not?

I had this problem and after a motherboard replacement I am back at 3.33 :)

My system used to recognize the battery but not work off it at all

If I pulled the ac, instant loss of power. Could not boot off battery alone either. Got a new motherboard in there and it was good to go again.

Only if you don't read the numbers or the text of the article.

Re: format of the charts, that's the way Excel made them. It's the numbers that matter. Like I said, its pretty much a wash (said that in the article too).

I think the SLI support in Dirt 2 that was just added a few days ago will negate the ATI lead there.

So that was a whole lot of work to determine that on a 2.8 Ghz C2D the 4870xf is the same as the 280m SLI - silly partisanship not withstanding.

As far as mobility GPUs go neither company has delivered meaningful improvements in a few years. So they both suck.

It would also be interesting to see the effect of a quad core on these tests, if one set of drivers utilizes a quad better than another

I understand that is out of your scope, but would still be interesting. Think we can go to Don for that, he had the GTX 280m with both a T9300 and his QX9300

my system recongizes the battery and i can normally boot on battery only.

thus when removing the ac it continues to work on battery. of course it stucks because the ATI driver is not the Dell one.

i tried to completely power off the machine for a while but this issue seems to be here to stay. even changed the thermal paste.

    any clues?

it looks like its not. i always have strange problems..my M17X is made to make my life difficult. lool. this is not a real issue of course as gaming on 3.07 or 3.199 ghz doesnt really makes a difference.

i will try to get a photo of the blue screen when it appears. the problem is that it appears randomly so i would have to be really fast and ready to do it.

edit: i forgot to say i am on 3.04 ghz now.

is there any possibility that the cpus life is reduced or something? are those symptoms of something like that or if this happens it just stops working at all?

Before I put the 280m cards back in, are there any mods that would net substantially more performance from the 4870s?

What kind of clocks are people using day in/out?

As long as the temperatures are managed (I would say under 80c) you cannot damage these cpus overclocking them. The reason is we never go outside the specified voltage - which is what causes the damage

So 620/950 are probably good - I can't imagine that will make a big difference vs the scores I got. Plus it is a whole lot of flashing/testing to get there.

I think I'll need a QX to get the most out of these cards. Hmmm.

it's not that much 3.150 vs 3.33ghz. And voltage is limiting it not the chip it self. In the whitebook this same cpu hits 3.2 all day.

Moving forward, any benchmark posts of non-M17x systems will be removed as it is OT and not specific to the M17x. This thread is for benching the M17x. If you want to bench another system and discuss it, do it in the Gaming/Hardware section of NBR or in the NBR forum for that system.

Any questions on this, send me a PM.

    Thanks.

Hey everyone, i've got a problem with my m17x r2. I did not reinstall the OS i just used the one from the factory. i wanted to try Benchmarking, so installed 3dmark06, went to the overclock settings and practically put everything at the highest settings. when i run 3dmark06 i got 11,000 or something in that range. i upgraded to the latest bios, and still no help. i was hoping to know if its something i can fix, with a driver, program, or something of that sort. can anyone help?
Also does anyone have a good way to OC?
