disable the cdrom drive and install via usb.

Drake, can you update the scores page with my latest score? It's in my sig. thx.
-
you can tell joker has jokes...like he didn't see where you said you were going to do it later...rotflmao!
-
I didn't read the other OT conversations so I must have missed it.
-
It'll get done, mine aren't there either.
Have ya it 17K yet? -
Haven't tried. Doubt I will so go for it. -
disable the cdrom drive how? You mean on a usb stick or on an external cd drive?
-
If I pass your score it'll motivate you.
I'm trying to get a run @930 done but can't yet. I'm sure it's a driver issue at this point. -

With XP you have to load the AHCI drivers at OS install or it is a no go....pretty gay but that is what you get for using a 10 year old OS
-
I'm sending this computer back in 2 days so I doubt I'll be submitting anymore extreme runs. At most one more and that's it. I won't be doing these kinds of OC's with my replacement unit. -
Pretty Gay
WOW, has it really been 10 years... And how do i load them?
-
Joker, are you sending back your replacement for a replacement? Or are you sending the first laptop with the paint issue back? Do both have 5870s? Just curious as to whats got you sending it back.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
You have to have them on a floppy and load them when prompted during the OS install (at the beginning when it is loading files)
You can also use a slipstreamed OS iso with the driver already there -
You can disable the CDROM in the bios. You can load the OS via USB CD or a USB stick, as long as it's USB.
-
It's the original one with the bad paint job. The replacement will be here in a week or so.
-
Would you be willing to try this since it's going back?

It's been floating around the Asus forums... -
What the heck type of bin file is this? Also Why couldn't you just get parts replacement and not just a full replace m17x, really hard to push dell sometimes for these things.
-
I don't think I'll try a different vendor vbios. The issue with us being stuck with old drivers and not being able to use reference is an AMD problem anyway which should be taken care of soon. I also don't want to send Dell a bricked system.
I pushed for a system replacement. I didn't pay 3 grand to have some lame tech come take apart my new computer completely and then attempt to reassemble it. I think a monkey would do a better job..wait I know it would: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DPQW0e9ufM -
Hilarious, hahaha!
-
Yes its quite funny and these techs really don't know anything. That's the second time you posted that video i believe. Well anyway couldn't you just work on your machine if you don't trust anyone else? How bad of the extent was the paint damage? What caused it?

i think its the new stuff of Dell. we are going to see better days. loool. dont forget monkeys have 99% of humans DNA. maybe the rest 1% is not needed.loooooooool -
I updated Joker's score on the leader page. I haven't done mine because I need to take the time to find my highest score on my "benchmarking" SSD.
-
Did you hit 930 core yet? Shouldn't be too difficult besting my score once you reach that core speed. Can't wait till AMD releases updated drivers that we can use. -
@joker is it safe running your core at 910 for gaming?
-
No I got my M15x so I started playing with that. I'll get back to it in a day or two.
Big fat NO. It would more than likely cause hang ups in gaming. -
I would say based on the temps I saw for the memory, no. In furmark it got hot enough to the point where I had to shut it off in fear of it reaching temps that would cause it to fail. Max safe OC I'd say would be 860ish for gaming, that should give you decent temps in game and very close to the same performance as 900 core. Don't overvolt the chip, run it at stock voltage and just up the clock only. -
It's official that our 5870s are proprietary. They don't work in other systems like the Clevo cards do.
-
that all depends on where you live and what the room temp is at at the time of most of these over clocks....not to mention the surface said laptop is sitting on...(sitting in bed trying to game...like will cause a thermal shut down as well)
best to make light on the over clock full time gaming mode...3 to 4 fps (max including AA/AF) really isn't that major of a difference to run the risk of breaking something. dial down a setting here or there and run with it...
"just a suggestion" and not a "what you should do". -
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
Why did Dell do that....
-
It's really weird...
The Clevo 5870 does not work in the M17xR2 but does work in the M15x.
The AW 5870 does work in the M17xR2 but not in the M15x.
I would guess the AW 5850 would not work in the M17xR2 also. -
Dell's way of keeping their M15x/M17x distinct I'd say. They know M15x users can grab a Clevo one but they do their part in not allowing their own cards. What's interesting is that the Dell 5850's have crossfire connectors. I'd be curious to see if those would work in an R2.
-
Are those cards made specific to Dell in terms of hardware meaning ATI manufactures them for Dell/AW or do they lock them with software?
-
My guess is the vbios lock. If someone is brave enough to flash a Clevo bios, I'm sure they could be unlocked but would probably lose crossfire in the process. -
Yes but that means anyone with the knowledge to edit the vbios code could make them usable...
-
This is what I was thinking.
It's that the Dell M17x-R2 bios only allow it to run the specific vbios, since they don't want people installing standard voltage 5870s. -
I was just wondering about a feature in the bios. The way we can increase the voltage for the RAM. I assumed it was for better stability when increasing the BCLK, but is it really? And why would dell put that feature unless we could overclock the RAM (not from the 5% bios feature). Would that in anway help benchmarks?
-
Joker when will you reveal your secret?
-
Does this mean we won't be able to download ATI drivers and are stuck with Dell drivers?
-
The next Ati release will work on the R2's 5870s.
-
A dash of salt, a pinch of pepper, lemon juice, diced tomatoes and onions. Eat it with some blue korn chips.
-
So no bits and peices of little children? Whoops..........
-
Wow that's funny, so hopefully now with the next bios release and drivers from ATI we can do some good old modding etc..
-
don't forget the angel tears.
-
This is my final extreme benchmark run with the 940xm + 5870s. This system goes back to Dell Monday morning and once I get my new one, I won't be subjecting it to this. Anyways, finally broke 17k cpu on this last run, my best yet:

See.. that's what scores should look like!

nice work!!
thumbs up!! -
Great work Joker! 940XM looks like a pretty nice CPU.
-
yes very good score
-
your a better man than i...
im not sold till i see it under wprime 155/super pi/pifast.

lol, if I had mine I would run those on it. My system didn't make it in time so it'll be the second week of July before I can run those programs.
