That would be awesome joker if you could do that![]()

What drivers/bios you on ?.The AMD gpu clock tool has worked np with all drivers i tried.Currently on 10.5/A05.
-
A05 & 10.6. it worked fine when i first installed the 10.6 afaik, but tbh i think i only ran stock benches to see what the gain was over 10.4 so it may be driver related
-
I installed 10.6 but had lame performance in some games i play compared to 10.5 so uninstall ed 10.6 but to be honest never tried overclock tool so it could be 10.6.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Do you all think that I can maybe use setfsb with my R1 to exceed the bios cap of 1333 on the fsb? I mean varying the offsets in the same fashion that joker did for the R2.
-
Its most likely the same thing that he did if you can find a working PLL, why not?
-
Yeah, I'm getting the same thing here. Could it be driver related? I'm using 10.6...what driver are you using clever?
-
same driver, 10.6. im gonna switch to 10.5 to see if it changes
-
im using the direct dell drivers when the computer arrived.
-
u have 5870s dont you?
-
yup, Crossfire 5870s. Mine wont even post an error message, 1mhz core or ram overclock on the second card and it freezes instantly.
-
when i got mine i updated to 10.4 over the dell drivers, and i am 100% positive that i was able to oc both cards. recently when you and joker uncovered the oc to the bclk, i tried oc the cards & cpu with 3d06 and it seemed to work, but it kept BSOD or freezing when i ran vantage.
i have the 4870s though so idk -
I have a sneaky suspicion 10.6 is to blame.
-
Wasn't 10.3 the best for benching?
-
at stock settings i got 300 more pts in 3d 06 & almost 800 in vantage 10.6 vs 10.3 over a 5 run average. but if i cant consistently oc the cards then 10.6 is worthless in benching. ill try the different drivers later today.
-
As promised, here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8_nAd3Vtbg
-
Joker can you do a run on superpi with your 940?
-
I think I posted it before but sure. This is my max OC and it's not 100% stable. It works fine for browsing etc but if I put anything like a 1080p flash video on, it BSOD's. The max stable clock I've gotten is in the 2.5 Ghz range. I think my 1066 mhz memory is also holding me back a bit.

we're doing it the same way, It's just as soon as you hit set clock, it freezes.
maybe, if I were running them. I'm not, I'm running the stock dell 10.5 drivers. -
i can't use AMD GPU tools to overclock. I can overclock the primary card, but as soon as I change anything on the second card, screen freezes. I have to resort to GPU bios overclock.
-
woot! +1 for owning a MS6.
<==== B5 S4 owner, although In my ricer days I owned a 3rd Gen Protege, but I still hang around my old friends often. -
switched to 10.5 it still didnt work after installing, & installing newest amd tool. so i uninstalled the newer amd tool and switched to 10.4 . Overclocking enabled on both cards. helps me but not those of you with 5870s

Aristotelhs2060 Notebook Virtuoso
well if its not 100% stable overclock i reached 3.95ghz with the OEM 920Ghz. can use it as usual except if i run benchmarks, leading to machine stuck during cpu test, then bosd and restart. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
if we are talking not stable....I got 4.33 on my QX9300
-
Aristotelhs2060 Notebook Virtuoso
so you say you reached a 58% overclock? lool impossible. maybe you mean 3.33 ghz. thus as i said i can use it for normal use except benchmarks. if it comes to 0% stability i reached over 4ghz for two seconds loool. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I did not mistype
, 4.33, and NOT stable haha - froze in middle of validation but got through to server in time
scook9's 4333 mhz CPU-Z run with Core 2 QX9300 (2.53Ghz) @ 4333MHz
And technically it is a 71% overclock -
that's insane scook LOL
-
Thats impressive.i7 Extreme 975 overclocked to 5027 MHz on superPi 1M run got 8.2 secs you got 10.9 on a 940XM
-
I'm trying to push my 620m to see how far it'll go and i've managed to get it up to 3.4ghz without turbo using jokers method.
But with turbo on it makes no difference to the performance... in cpuz and other cpu monitoring programs when turbo is enabled it shows over 4ghz but when i put any kind of load on the cpu the multiplier drops back to 20 regardless of temps.
Anyone know a way to stop the multiplier from dropping? i've tried eleet but it when i click apply the multipliers revert to default. -
Eleet only works with extreme proc. The only thing i can think of is Throttlestop 2.54 seen a option on it to lock Multiplier but only to a max of 21 but to be honest never tried it.
-
voltage increases, heatsink modifications? I'm guessing just the bottom plate off and a portable air conditioner?
-
Lmao please nothing is impossible. Also you need more voltage for 4+ were talking clarksfield not montevina

Since Mandrake has given his M17x up (thanks for your effort), I'll be taking over the official scores. To avoid any kind of confusion, score's will continue on from this point. SO if you've recently posted a score, re-post it after this to have your scores up (otherwise they won't count). Same rules apply (please see post 1 by BatBoy).

Aristotelhs2060 Notebook Virtuoso
yes and we speak about a laptop with restricted bios for such high modifications. if its about desktop use liquid nitrogen and press it to 5ghz.loool
even he reached it its actually useless. just for the record as many stuff seen here.
i overclocked the 4870s. they looked more than stable. until i was playing cod mw2 for more than one hour and i got a bsod probably due to overheat. the error was something about atisys -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I did boost the voltage for that oc but as for cooling, just sitting on a cryo at room temp with the backplate off
It will be easier for me to just use my chest freezer rather than a portable ac
-
Nothing is useless
No offense but you don't think like we do. .1 ghz isn't something we need it's something we try to do because it's a game to us.
It's the fact we are pushing it.
Just because you don't see it like others doesn't mean you need to bash us/it. -
I just broke my previous vantage record with minimal effort using the Catalyst 10.6 workaround + setfsb
Check it out, looks like I got plenty of room left to tweak + OC. 17k+ should be very easy to hit. The full potential of this notebook is finally becoming unlocked. First 17k GPU score sounds good, I'll hit it in a few minutes.

Pretty crazy Joker. Next week I should finally have time to throw my laptop in the freezer and work on benches with it. My desktop loop had a leak as well as a cpu upgrade so that has been occupying my nights so far
-
Freezer is pretty hardcore lol. Mine has no external cooling, it just sits on top of an unpowered targus pad. Doing a run right now hoping for 17k+.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I have a Cryo, but the freezer is already here and begging to be used (portable AC may be purchased later in summer if this heat keeps up....for real AC use even! lol)
And the freezer should be easier than sitting on my front porch like I was in february lol (about 8 degrees) -
AAAAAND I did it
Check it out, first notebook 17k Vantage score:

That is one hell of a GPU score - looks like the 5870s are finally becoming worth having over 4870s.....I thought you weren't into all this benching?
You do not have to have a portable AC unit to be a bencher - TheCodeBreaker and You being perfect examples
-
Well with all the new discoveries I've made with the M17x, the benchmarking was too tempting so I guess I'm officially a benchmarker...for now
You know I love the R2 because there's so much unlocking that needed to be done and half the joys of owning this machine has been figuring out ways to unleash all that power.
-
Should I run 3dmark06?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I think you kind of have to
-
Strangely enough the gains aren't seen in 06. I think I may have a bad application of shin etsu on my CPU so it hits 72 C very quickly and the Intel throttling kicks in. I've got it slightly overvolted so that may be contributing. I'm going to back down the voltage to stock and lower the OC on the CPU and see if that helps.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
That thermal throttling is a real problem... maybe you also need the freezer treatment on your laptop haha
I wish my throttling was thermal.....I get the horrific power throttling in my R1 -
Yeah the thermal throttling they put in these i7's is far too cautious. They should have at least put it somewhere around 90C. It limits the performance of the chips far too often and the sucky part is there's no real way around it. I wish Dell would have coded the TDP/TDC unlocker into the bios but you know how they are.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I get power throttling you get thermal
Both are extremely premature and unnecessary at the level they are set (highly interfering actually) as these levels are easily hit at stock settings.
We could try to lobby them to take it from the BIOS....but good luck
