I planned on using it for work but I'm sure I'll play around with it first.

I got this, needed to get it to $999 to take advantage of the additional $100 off.

Yes I sent them an email this morning. This version of the M17x will keep me busy until the next one comes.

My clocks rarely go below turbo mode speeds since I changed my power plan from balanced to high performance. I thought turbo mode was still supposed to be more dynamic regardless of OS settings. Unless of course Win 7 is interpreting the frequency incorrectly.

Nice. I'll be waiting for some reports on that CPU (M11x) after you are done with it. I want one but I can't get my head around the speed of it. It seems too weak. We'll see I guess.

I understand. I don't do too much gaming myself, even with the M17x. But as you know I have a netbook. At first it was fun, but it really is too weak. I know the Atom is no UCLV C2D but I still feel it might be a little slow. Say, how about some virtualization or coding on it? Even some fluid Photoshop CS4?

With the M17x definitely the M11x probably not. You be able to do some lightweight virtualization.

Madrake, what made you go with the SU4100 vs. the SU7300? I know this is getting of topic, I'm planning on ordering one, but can't decide if I want to order it with Microsoft office now, or just order that when I get the M17X R2 and transfer it over. I plan to use it mainly for work as well as keeping me from being to bored at work...little gaming.

Only the price. Not going to get anything extra out of the su7300 for what I want to do with it. I wanted the config to be no more than $1000 so I can get the biggest discount with the EPP discount + the coupon. In the end after taxes and with NBD it only cost me $800.

The OS says yes but it doesn't make sense if the proc itself is supposed to be more dynamic. Maybe Intel has better tools to determine this.

If you download RealTemp, there's a program called i7 Turbo that will tell you exactly whats going on. It's probably the best monitoring tool to get for i7's.

The Turbo i7 looks good. When not under load you can see the multipliers fluctuate. When it is under load all of the change to 24.

I'll try the other test also.

After 1 minute load the temps are within 5C of each other.

Edit: Same after 2 minutes. The cores are right around 70C.

Edit2: 0&2 run hotter than 1&3 but still within 5C.

Shows only 2 cores in use what ever you used to test it was built for a dual core

it will heat up the surronding cores but there will be a temp difference.

For load testing Prime95 + small tfts will push all 8 threads. Couple that with i7 turbo and/or realtemp and you will see exactly whats going on. You should be in the 2 ghz range at stock settings though. The 3.5 ghz does sound unrealistic for all 4, I'm thinking 2.5 ghz would be something we might be able to hit.

ok, so it is using all 4 cores

it will never ever be even temps on all 4 cores....ever.
if it was like 30/34/68/70....then it would be using 2 cores.

but because of the turbo...the temps can be as far as 15c off.

    edit:
also...do these cards switch between master and slave card or is one a dedicated master and the other a slave?

    Am I missing something here?..

they are master master, or there would not be a crossfire option in CCC right?

But I guess if they take turns playing master like you say, that would be good for wear leveling between the 2 cards

depending on booting...either card can be hosted as master card and the other a slave.
if msi afterburner worked on these cards, you would see what i mean.
they alternate for some reason...that's why they need to have the same bios....probably why the w90 had so many problems..they had a slave and a master bios. which meant the os couldnt switch between cards. (speculations of course)

If one Windows based program can do it so can others. I wonder is MSI afterburner can be manipulated to work.
