Does RBE work better (higher clocks) than using a piece of software to control oc?

easy. rbe doesn't store profiles or change clocks on the fly. and not everyone wants to flash their cards... :) ...like us constant flashers. :D

I just have a line of .rom files on my desktop, take your pick! lol

And since I got my ssd back restarting is not as painful anymore :)

It varies and I don't know if anyone has tried both with the 4870s yet. I thought with the 4850s RBE was more stable than the ATI GPU tool.

OC'ing before getting into Windows in my mind is more stable. We would have to test this out.

I would personally trust a vbios flash more because you dont have to count on cpu stability like you would going through a driver/software

Still flashing the vbios brings an additional risk to the equation so people not used to flashing devices are more apprehensive.

winphlash via RBE is pretty safe, pretty much no margin for user fubar

There should be zero difference between a vbios and software overclock unless you are changing the voltage in the vbios flash. I personally do not like having to constantly flash the rom on my vid card to make changes.

from what I found, changing the voltage of the 4870s so far makes a minimal difference but can introduce 3d stuttering like the M17 suffered when quad cores were installed

it just pushes the power supply of the system too hard

Well the 240w supply definitely isn't enough for the 920xm + 4870 xfire while running p95 + furmark. The new furmark pushes the system extremely hard (more so than the older one) so the screen starts flickering. The system seems pretty stable otherwise but it's definitely approaching it's power limit.

Ditto that's just asking for trouble.

If something goes wrong I can just boot using the 9400, then do a flash on USB, just less convenient is all

And it is only trouble if you have an unstable system.....

Or you could just use a software program and not bother with constantly flashing the video card (which does wear out the eeprom btw).

    example:
to find max clocks...you have to go 1 mhz at a time when you start getting near the max clocks.
you got 50 .roms files on your desktop?
and another 50 for the memory?

if you do...your a very bad man!
    :D

    side note:

they are both stable and your changing the exact same clocks.... be it software or hardware... the main difference....
software is resettable after every boot
hardware is not. mess around and flash the wrong clocks...and it could take some time to get your system back...if you flashed both cards.
(and i have done that before...flashed the memory clocks to the core clocks and vs versa..i was a noob on steroids at that time..lol)

Can the owners of QX9300 and GTX 280M SLI tell me your best Vantage and 3dmark06 scores? The top positions seem to be all taken by ATI card owners.

    Thank you

Was that wiki entry for video bios eeprom? I'd think it would be closer to flash memory (about 100k before wear). Obviously either number is far more than anyone would ever do (unless scook just REALLY LOVES flashing). I'd still rather go the software route, it's easy and convenient with no real risks. Alright finally time for the SSD install.

The scores linked in my sig are the top scores for the 4870s and GTX 280m in vantage. My 4870 run is the best for an R1 in 06. The top GTX 280m score on the R1 in 06 is 17665 from mandrake I believe. Mandrake also had a higher GPU score on the 4870s in the R1 in vantage but lower overall

He can probably only adjust the turbo boost bins because the 920xm has unlocked multipliers

Maybe that is the only one that can be OC'd? Or can you still manipulate the 720qm in the bios Moo?

Just as a baseline since some of you have been posting them -

Vantage run after launching app (no consecutive runs performed), no GPU or CPU OC, PhysX disabled, 9400M G disabled, Vista 64

186.82 using 196.34 SLI Profiles (SLI Profile was unchanged for Vantage but figured I'd mention it).

    P10153
    GPU: 10089
    CPU: 10352

    @Lewdvig - which driver?

Just a thought, I think its helpful if folks list the driver version they are benching with if not including a GPU-z screenshot.

here are some "as are" runs. meaning just that.."no tweaking!"
this means, but not limited to..setting you computer systems to high quality as well and let application decide setting everything to performance, means you're not in high quality mode and your cheating your self.. :D
time to run them as is with AA/AF on...time to get the real gaming numbers.
lets see how many can beat these desktop cards *stock no over clock of cpu/gpu/memory*
here goes a chart... pick your screen size and jump in with which ever game you have on that chart.

    on 635/1115 now

    physics test is corrupted :(

running just gpu but not looking good ... I'll go to the overclocking place this weekend and go for 700 on the core like I did with nvidia

    I attached the "NEW" Vbios

Some one needs to flash both cards with it and then lemme know if they can overclock further or less because my clocks are sucking it up

    more fun. stock gpu.
i was going to aim for 90fps but it seems that i should break 100fps. (once a benchmark hits a certain amount it becomes useless. like dmc4. :( i want to say after 120fps. )
