and are you alt tabbing out of aquamark to set the cpu affinity?
-
Hmm I think I did at one point.
Hmm well now I can boot with the 940 and 920, so the chip is still good. Booted on battery, and got into windows, and when I clicked the start menu it froze, fans spun up, for about 20 sec and it shut down. On both chips, so I at least know the chips are good.
Booted with the 520 and it's flawless. The other chips weren't getting hot either, I was able to open Real Temp and it was at 40* when the 920 froze up. Ran OCCT and the 520 temp went up but didn't freeze. Going to put it back together with the 920 right now.
Also the bios is set to defaults too. -
so you did a bios reset right. the go into bios and click factory defaults as well right?
-
i had these same problems after i tried some serious benching, removing the entire top of the laptop for cooling, i did a power drain and got nothing, then i took it apart again & put it back together did another power drain &let it sit without the bios battery. it worked. this is the main reason i haven't tried beating he 520m scores from jeep guy(sorry forgot your name) now that i have no warranty. try this see if it helps.
-
Ok, I'm going to give it a shot. I was actually thinking of clearing the CMOS to. I'm going to pull the batt, and put it back together, maybe try it and then crash for the night
-
Hmm no luck.
I'm calling it a night and will try a HDD swap tommorrow with my HDD with the default factory image.
-
Well BC2 kept crashing to me so I had enough and reverted back to 10.7's. Didn't get to test out OC performance on those drivers, but game FPS were MUCH better with the 10.8 beta's. Too bad it doesn't help if it crashes ur game every 10 minutes.
-
Well I've narrowed my BSOD problem down to the Win 7 install on my benching SSD, of which I have no back up, so now I need to go in and save everything and rebuild it.
At least I know my motherboard and CPU chips are still good. I put in my factory HDD in it and thats what I'm using to type now.
-
Bummer man, Hope you get it sorted soon!
-
Yup that does happen when you get lots and lots of BSODs. I think the OS just gets corrupted from the amount or something. It happened to me a while back, but you just have to reformat the hard drive and your all set.
-
better that than parts!
it happens to me a few times a month....but after something like 2 to 3000 reboots....and not fixing the errors on the spot...tends to lead to this.... -
Well I think I got it. Booted into safe mode, and began removing anything in device manager that was processor related. Then I removed the ATI drivers. So far no BSOD. When I was getting it I was getting it prior to going into windows, or just into windows (5 sec) if I was lucky. So I think I got it. I think the display drivers were also corrupted from benching and OCing and all that jazz. So I'm going to reinstall the 10.8 betas and go from there later on. Gotta watch some Chuck Bartowski first
But your right john, better the OS then the parts. That 920+940 set me back quite a bit. Funny thing was it would work with the 520M
-
yes...i was kind of looking at your 920, for my self....lol
-
ok guys. here it is... vantage run. no modification or external cooling of any sort... thermal paste is dell factory.

That run is good enough to make the Top 5 in the Wiki. Benchmarks - Alienware M17x Wiki. And hopefully I'm not next.

You are definitely off to a good start mazdaspeed_6
Great score -
Nice score Mazda! Keep it up.
Well I installed the Beta drivers and so far the system is running well. Saved me from having to rebuild my benching SSD.
John, this 920 is definately a great chip, just gotta find a way to goost the voltage and keep it cool, perhaps the most challenging aspect of it. -
oh...i have a few ideas on that part...
the problem is getting the right system to do it in.
-
Yea, not many mobile systems allow playing with voltage.
Right now I'm running 3DMark06 and Vantage on my M11x integrated GM45 GPU. Talk about a slide show. 532 for 3DMark06, and Vantage looks more frozen then anything. I'm 45sec (what it says, probably longer) into it and have 6 frames lmao
This might take a while.
EDIT: first test just ended, I think I ended with 7 frames lol -
i did a few of those super slow runs...
and i also seen codebreaker up there trying to slide in some pentium m runs as well....lol -
lol, yea, I scored a P18 At least it was good enough to beat out the other contenders P17
Sad when the SU7300 is
raising my scores. Maybe I just need to do some tweaking...nah
-
damn! i havent got that low yet...pretty damn close though.
-
YEa, it's funny running those. But a gold cup is a gold cup!
-
hummmm, i thought you knew!
im trying to get my 75 cpu achievement...i need another cpu to bench for that though..haha -
lol, I need to get more hardware too. Looking to see what I can find.
Aquamarks doesn't rely on crossfire much. My best runs have dual GPUs only 3K higher. -
depends on the cards being benched...old vga can keep up with new hardware on some of these test.
-
Ah, got one more bench to submit tommorrow, but just pulled ahead of Scook. Sittin right on top of him in the country rankings
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
That is because john and his ss took 10 points off me lol
-
dont blame my SS buddy...i bought that with intentions on having a serious cooling experience....lol
-
Wiki might be there for our use, but the official score's are still here
-
also:
massman said they are going to try and make the laptop section work, but also said it will take time. being that there're only 2 of them coding...when they aren't working. but it is on their to do list. -
I would recommend against benching with the new 10.8 beta's for now guys. Performance is a bit iffy in them (specially for 06 where it crashes) and they might mess with your system in ways they shouldn't.
At least hardcore benching like a few small group of us do. I'd wait till the stable 10.8's come out
-
with benching...newer drivers dont always make the best candidates...
some times...it's the factory drivers FTW.
gaming...entirely different though.. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
factory driver got my 06 over 21k
-
Yep I started up vantage and the screen started flashing twice so I shut my machine down. Don't think I'm going down that route till we have stable(er) drivers.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
10.6 was great for vantage for me
-
10.6 is what I used for my top bench runs. Right now I have the dell betas installed. To lazy to go to my office to test bench them with the A/C, maybe later in the week.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
And I passed you in HWbot DR, had a few submissions I needed to get in. Still got one more to do as well (good for 3-6 points depending how well it goes lol)
-
Yea, I saw that earlier when I woke up, at like 5 PM. I have one more submission to make and it's only going to be good for 2 pts. I need to get my hands on some more hardware at some point. Might have to hit the market place. Nice job though
-
lol
i think we found dr650se a part time hobby...
-
Really? I was running 10.7 on mine.. that means I coulda been closer to you.. if not better
-
I think so
@Jubbing lol yea, I didn't bench much with the 10.7s. Might try again when I get motivated, although when I did try them out they gave similiar scores. Maybe it was the 10.7 Betas, which still say 10.6 in GPU-Z. Can't remember. -
hummm, im still trying to figure out how come yours says world record?
i got like 50 of those and mine doesn't say that....lol
edit: make that 72. haha -
Mmm.. Mine still said 10.7 in my gpu-z.
-
Yea, I'm not sure why, I think it's because it's a mobile CPU. I think it was #3xx something as far as dual cores goes and the top i5 520m. So far the only piece of hardware that's given me global points too. I need to re-run it because if I can shave even a sec off the time, it'll move up in the ranks and score a few more points
@Jubbing, hmm, then I was probably stil using 10.6s at that point. Shoulda kept better track but I was sleep deprived at that point lol -
Lol fair enough. Maybe I'll try 10.6's sometime next week.
-
Definately give them a shot, If I recall correctly, I don't think it changed the scores much. I was getting the impression that at high clocks there wasn't much differance, but at base clocks it changed a little. All I know is I havn't been able to beat my current top scores. But it might be because of the drivers. I might roll back and see where they get me. If only we could up the GPU voltage farther then 1.15v then we could possibly break 20K at 1.2v
-
I agree, the voltage on the cards is holding us back. Joker's not too far behind us, and I'd like to keep it that way for now
But as for rolling back, I'll let you start on that.. see how you go. Then tell us all which one is better
(In all seriousness, it'll help get some people higher score's which will make it more competitive). Out score's of 19k are YET to be matched.. and its pretty daunting to say the least. if you don't have an aircon to help you boost scores (nearly a 1000 difference it can make)
All I know is that is MOST CERTAINLY helps to have an aircon lying around. My highest score is 18300 without at aircon, where I managed (on 10.7's) 935/1252 clocks... which strangely under aircon conditions, I haven't managed to replicate those clocks. My highest score of 19158 was 932/1243... every time I tried pushing past 1243.. it BSOD or froze.
So yours were slightly higher.. -
yeah...it's not the voltage...it's your cards temps that are doing it now. the colder the card..the less voltage you really need. so if the card were in the subzero range....then 1.15 would be more than enough.
so in short...your cards need to be colder and not more voltage....
once the cards are benched in optimal range for them...that's when you find out if you need more voltage....
so in otherwards:example
you run furmark...those cards need to stay below 5C to 10C
running at 1920x1080 full AA/AF. -
Yea, Johns definately right. I saw the same thing on the M11x R1. I was able to push the card a lot harder. I think a large part of that was that I was running in in front of an A/C when outdoor temps were a lot cooler. It was around release time in March. If I were staying here through Jan, then I'm certain I could push the clocks a lot harder. When I benched the top score it was about 2 am, so the outdoor temp was around 92*F which helped. If out door temps were in the 30's I'd probably squeeze more out of them. The A/C's I use are built with the back end outside. Now keeping them below 10*C, that would be a challenge, but probably possible in Ohio winters, or with some extreme cooling. Thats something that I may look into trying when I return home
