I've noticed the same thing. I think I read with some M18x's you have to move the SSD to the other slot. I'd have to go back and read to get more info. My unit came with a Sata III 256GB Lite-on SSD. Not the standard Sammy SSD.

Okay so I am running the modified .92v bios that was created (by Saltius) based on the newest A01 bios. This bios replaces the second highest clocks with the highest clocks, so even when the system would be throttled from being under full load, it doesn't (because it switches to clocks that are the same as the highgest).

Now what I've noticed is that with furmark open, I don't get any throttling... HOWEVER my gpu's reach 100+ degrees C which is completely just melting.

HOWEVER... I opened the latest A04 bios installer and noticed that all my fans were working harder than I've ever heard them before.

Intrigued, I opened gpuz and furmark... while running these two with the fans going full blast, my temps never went above 77C...

then I closed the A04 bios installer and the fans died down to about half their speed (i previously thought this speed to be the fullest, because it never went higher than this before running the Bios installer).

Sure enough, leaving furmark open with the fans no longer running at full speed.... and I get these temperatures:

Shortly after, my computer shut off. Keep in mind that the temp went from 76C to 100+C within a matter of seconds. I didn't have enough time to switch to furmark and close it, I only saw a temp of 104C and then the computer shut off.

So my question is this... why doesn't the VBIOS of the 580m's ever tell the fans to hit 100%? I mean, this seems like a no-brainer.

In any event... I've looked for my own means of controlling the fans.

I installed a program called EVGA precision. the problem is, the fan control option is disabled. Does anyone know why? (or for that matter, know of any other programs that give the ability to control the fans and/or create my own fan control profile?)

how about this...i want to know something...
can you just run vantage jane nash test at those clocks and let me know what you get with this modified bios.

and there is virtually no fan control on laptops...i think you can count them on one hand that do.

other alternative is to use hwinfo to max the fans out.

Hwinfo would be fantastic if you could set it to load at startup and apply your custom fan profiles...

Why does Hwinfo allow control over the fans while MSI afterburner, Trixx, Overdrive, etc don't? Anyone out there savvy enough with software editing to crack into this? The solution could be something as simple as dropping an edited .dll file into a folder to enable fan control in any program.

    I'm lovin it!!!

The 285.38 drivers are amazing compared to the dell drivers. The increase in performance is so dramatic that I had to adjust my dpi settings for my mouse!!!

Oh yeah.... the original dell drivers was actually slower than 6990.... hence why a lot of people were like with the extra 600.... a couple of months later the story changed.

yes I did. still trying to figure out how to make my gpu fans run at 100% when they reach a certain temperature. i dont see why dell doesn't use 100% for the fans...

or are my fans not working right?

if so, then why do they run at 100% when installing a motherboard bios?

    hmm...

When you run the program hw as run/read you will see a little picture of a fan brown in colour on the bottom/ Hit that and set the fans indictor bar to say 5000 and hit the icon manual you fans then will spin full bolt.

this works, thank you... that little button was evasive for me.

but is this really the only way to control the fans for the 580m's in the m18x? there's no add-on for the nvidia control panel? there's no light-weight software that runs as a service instead of a startup item?

neosis - there is no way other than HWiNFO to control the fan speeds. It's the same way with the 6990M and 6970M, not a unique problem with the 580M.

When you say hot, how hot are we talking? Have you re-pasted your heat sinks?

Your Vantage score is very good, yet appears to be driven by your 2960XM CPU... your CPU score is super! My 6990M CFX is running about 3,000 points higher on the GPU score, but my CPU is holding me back from a higher overall Vantage score.

His CPU scores are with PPU enabled.... not sure how they trannslate though if it was disabled... but you probably already know this.

This makes comparing SLi to CrossFireX systems more challenging because AMD did not begin to employ the PPU concept until the advent of Fusion technology and it's not really what we are looking for as gamers and power users. (From what I have read on the subject, it seems AMD is more focused on using Fusion to help boost performance of underpowered low-end and mediocre hardware.)

This may be a bit of a crude analysis on my part, but it seems that CFX systems have to rely on brute force alone to achieve performance results; whereas SLi systems employ a more elegant approached to achieve results and maximize performance using the PPU concept working in tandem with brute force.

In a equally crude analogy, I would compare this to having two high performance vehicles; one with carefully planned gear ratios and the other with "whatever." It's going to take more horsepower to get the car with "whatever" to perform as well as vehicle with potentially less horsepower and thoughtfully designed gearing.

Well two ways to look at this:

    a) By default PPU is disabled... so for examples in my scores you will see my CPU getting scores closer to 30k and it's indeed outperforming his 40k+, so by leaving PPU disabled we're leveling the plainfield.

    b) Not sure why we should disabled PPU, PhysX is an Nvidia feature and as so we should be allow to run with it... Alot more like your second point.

Yup, totally agree with both points. With respect to the "b" comments; if you've got the technology, by all means it should be leveraged. Brute force is great, but only when it's put to good use. NVIDIA does a great job of that with PhysX technology. In a competitive environment of any kind, results always trump effort.

I'm disappointed AMD is not using Fusion technology in a similar fashion on their high performance products... it is sad they are wasting it on the cheap stuff. Fusion really has no value with Intel processors, so in my view they are missing a great opportunity to catapult their products to new heights on Intel-powered systems. But, Fusion technology is new and there's hope they will implement something similar to what NVIDIA has done with PhysX. NVIDIA PhysX definitely offers a performance edge that is not available on AMD-based systems.

It would be very interesting to see how 6990M CFX would perform with a similar architecture. I'm sure it would be pretty amazing. For now, I would settle for excellent drivers from AMD. They need to try to get that part right first.

On a side note, a lot of members ask me why I switched both of our M18x's to 580M SLI. The real reason is, I've had 2 M18x's with 6990M CF and 580M SLI side by side and seen higher performance with the SLI config. Recently I've read all these posts from CF members saying SLI owners are justifying their purchases with sensationalist claims. This is not the case. Seeing how most people here always referrence notebookcheck, here is a review I stumbled upon that really hits close to home.

Review GeForce GTX 580M SLI vs. Radeon HD 6990M CF - Notebookcheck.net Reviews

I'm not posting this to cause a debate. I just wanted to put it out there that these cards are beast and are worth every penny(Even though I got all 4 of mine for free). I find it lame that so many members who've never seen the competitors cards in action are so quick to pass judgement.

In the end I know that we are all on the same team, and I personally appreciate our NBR CF members support.

After reading the article above, they say in the conclusion that the 580's pip the 6990's by av. 5% which indeed gives the green's the crown of king of mobile gpu's - for the time being! lol

There are some people who will want the best (even if its only 5% better) and will be willing to pay the huge markup to get it....just from a personal view point, I always weigh things up from a performance/cost point of view and if others do the same, that gives AMD the crown.

My own conclusion? - both are awesome!

I so agree with you. You are one of the few open minded CF owners. You wouldn't believe some of the other recent posts that I read.
It's amazing how the 580M SLI went from a tamed beast in a cage to all out stealing the show. I really hope Dell creates an official vBIOS that addresses the needs of the community. Yesterday I ran Crysis 2 with DX11 and high res texture pack on stock vBIOS and saw the 580M down clock for a few seconds. If not maybe someone could start a guide on how to properly push the 580M SLI. There's so many vBIOS out now that makes it confusing. It's probably in Dell's best interest to release a vBIOS than to have users break their 580M's from unofficial sources. I'm also thankful for the community's alternative methods.

I'm pretty sure that as we speak, Dell engineers are working on a vBIOS that suits both us and them. Everything they need to know from us is in this thread and a few others here on NBR. I wouldn't be surprised if Bill or Dell posts good news about a new vBIOS. I know if I was an engineer from Dell, I would rather read these threads and produce a proper vBIOS release then go into a conference with NBR/TI M18x owners.

the problem is there surely was some kind of philosophy behind introduction of the throttle. if particular influential enough people at dell believe the throttle is needed, it simply will not go away just like that. this is why we are having the conference call with dell engineers: to hear at the source what's up with the whole 'throttle' idea.

and yes, you are perfectly right skygunner27. it would be enough to impose a temperature limit and get rid of anything else and the problem would be solved. sounds simple. can 'simple' win vs corporate policy/thinking? we shall see.

im pretty sure it was some tech who thought it would be a great idea to save on cost of blowing the cards up...not really corporate...and then it was passed down to the 580M.

Problem with that review is that they chose some games which typically favor nVidia hardware and are TWIMTBP games (e.g. Mafia 2, Dirt 3). I've always said nVidia does a better job spending money/development resources with game devs and it pays off with a few key games but also tends to slant a review if the scope of games are limited and it includes TWIMTBP titles. I could easily write a review that shows the 580M SLi losing to 6990s if I wanted. Overall I still think 580M SLi is on average 10% faster than 6990s. If I had a choice, I'd go with 580Ms as long as there was no throttling.

if they ditch the throttling & add a turn off switch for tessellation...it's going to be a bit more than 10 percent...

Fair assestment. With the recently released unofficial vBIOS released by the community, we really have a good handle on throttling. It would be nice if we could get something official from Dell. You upgrade(6970M to 6990M) fast.

Funny, if you run the same tests with your rig you will get better results (true for both the 580s and 6990s). I didn't see 10% but I never checked games that run at 100+ FPS on both GPU solutions. So maybe if we take those into consideration, as well as the extreme OC'ing, there could be such a difference. I'm still not convinced.

What about stock clocks and the average of the following:

    Benches:

    Vantage P GPU (No Physx)
    3DMark06
    3DMark11
    Unigine 2.5

    Games:

    Crysis
    Crysis 2 DX11
    Metro2033 DOF enabled
    Just Cause 2 DX11
    Witcher Ubersampling
    BF3

And any game that runs below 60FPS as it is totally pointless to consider games that run @100+, IMHO.

nope. from what we are told and what i have seen...looks to be the exact as ao3.

stock clocks? did you guys run like 1k of these test already? and considering everyone one here seems to run some form of gpu or cpu or both over clocked..stock is pretty much out the window. that's why i let you guys run these test... :)

and im clearly not a nvidia or a amd fan boy. so i could care less who is on top..i just like running the numbers... :)

I flashed & unflashed A04 yesterday because it causes DPC Latency issues. Plus my M18x doesn't suffer from the 8 beeps. A03 is where it's at.

Currently I am on stock clocks on both of my 2 580M SLI M18x's, until I can negotiate an extention of my warranty. At this time, I can not afford to replace a 580M at 1189.99 a peice once my warranty ends in 6 months. At stock clocks the 580M SLI performs better than my previous 6990M CF M18x(upgraded to 580M SLI) in the following games: Crysis 1, 2(especially with DX11, HRTP and parts with large amounts of tessellation) & Warhead, MW2, BC2, UT3, DS2, BulletStorm, ME2, MoH, NFS:HP & Shift 2, SSIV:AC, Split Second, SC2 & L4D2. The only game that I'm certain that runs better on AMD at stock clocks is Metro 2033. The other games that I own that I did not mention had a FPS cap after a certain amount of frames could be achieved.

All of these old games really don't matter...lol. BF3 is almost here......

I thought the Heaven benchmark looked amazing on 6990M CF. You should see it with 580M SLI.

That's the thing, at stock clocks I got mixed results. Too mixed to point out a clear winner. Anyway, I might just grab another SLI equipped system to test the latest drivers/vBIOS and see if there's a difference.

Actually, I did see it with the 580Ms, looked the same to me but a bit more laggy (probably due to the throttling that was present at the time). I think we still have a couple of the green beasts in the lab. Anyway, might give it another try.
