If we're looking at two cards that both top out in OC at or around their desktop counterparts, which is what most have reported so far, that's accurate: the 580m (560ti) will be +/-5% faster than the 6970m (6870) on average with some games favoring one or the other card.

That was done on stock clocks. I would love to find out how much more can be had from the 6990m though

    So 580m better than 6990m?

I don't care about CFX, what about single gpu, which one is better? I need to know so if that is the case I'll just buy the 485m and OC it to the 580m stock and run Crysis 2 at 34fps on Ultra.

It really looks like the 6970/6990/580 are all within relative ranges; especially in crossfire mode. Meaning it will play the same games at about the same settings until games come out that need desktop performance. I wonder when that time will be?

Cheesy I believe the above test results are for a single card 6990m.

You can find some single card 580m stats here.
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M - Notebookcheck.net Tech

But until we have game performance stats nothing is conclusive... IMO

Also would be helpful if Notebookcheck updated their 6990m page with tests using the actual card rather than a downclocked 6870 desktop gpu.

Speaking of which, how do the benchmarks we have in this thread so far stack up against a 6870 running at 6990m clocks? (I think we have some single card benches now right?)

No surprises there from dellienware. Nothing but the best quality assurance from that team....

Congrats on a (hopefully) otherwise perfect machine. I'm looking forward to seeing what that system is truly capable of.

The mini-subwoofer blew out on mine on the first power-up... do they even QA these things, LOL  ? Smelt this awful metallic burning and was scared it was one of the GPUs, but everthing else is working fine. Now it just makes a sound like a geiger counter when it's active. I can live with it for the time being since I hardly every use the internal speakers, but will RMA once I have some downtime.

you're right, that is a single 6990m. It's comparable to what is displayed at notebookcheck for the 580m, if not the tiniest bit inferior. Of course the 580m was tested with a montser cpu in that test.

Wait, I'm confused. How is the 6990m slightly inferior? According to the above link to Notebook check, the 6990m outperforms the 580m by 10-20% in every game they tested. And it outperformed it in every benchmark as well.

    Or am I mistaken?

It looks like they traded blows but it appeared the 6990 does outperform by a few percent in some games. I love the Metro2033 6970 CF scaling. Until the 6990CF and 580SLI are entered, that shows over 100% increase over the 580M. Quite impressive scaling on ultra.

They used a dummied down desktop video card that was supposed to be clocked to what the specs were on a 6990m not an actual 6990m

yeah, the notebookcheck 6990m benches were performed on an underclocked (to match the 6990m's clockspeeds) desktop gpu. The actual 6990m benches did not perform as well as the model that notebookcheck posted. These numbers:
    3dmark11 3517
    vantage 14339
are benchmarks that I performed on my 6990m. The vantage score for 580m on notebookcheck is 14403, but also had a better cpu (dont know how much that matters though)...

Yes OK i figure that, suck meh, but Mythlogic had tested them out and said that the 6990m is 2 to 3% better than the 580m.

For those who don't know Mythlogic is a Sager custom builder and were the first to received the 6990m after Alienware.

All I can say is this is gonna be interesting............. amd claims 18-25% faster and it doesn't seem to be the case. Let the driver wars between Nvidia and AMD begin eh?

I wonder how long before the 6XX vs the 7XXX card wars happens?

Well... Ok.....Correct me if im wrong.

Using the 580m SLI numbers from notebookcheck.net.

With stock drivers and no O.C.

3D Mark 11 the 6990m Cross Fire scores 4.20 percent better then the 580m SLI

Vantage the 6990 Cross Fire scores 8 percent less then the 580m SLI

    OK Speedy..... work your magic.

But in the end, it's how they score in games that realy matter to me.

But, the keyboard is solid, and the GPUs seem good I'm going to see how they do at 800mhz.
