Hehe, Sager has it's own perks such as cooling, upgradeable screens, etc.
Personally, if M18x wasn't such an awesome beast I'd grab a M6600 as the only possible competitor for my needs. BTW, M6600 with a FirePro 8900M can barely stay 3 hours on battery. Other than the screen, M18x is the king in all aspects. Even the screen can be upgraded ;)

^^ I agree, the screen is more than acceptable, even though I will try to upgrade to a 112% gamut RGB LED TN panel.

Are you going to do a mini-review in these forums or a bigger review in the review section? Notice I never even asked if you are NOT going to do a review :p (maybe you won't)

Please let us know when you find a supplier of the screen. Maybe you can get a group of us commited and get a better price.....Or just sell them for a small profit.

There are still some questions remain. The screen may not be easily upgradeable if Dell went the R1/R2 route. If that's the case, removing the panel will involve cutting some metal on the lid and would void the warranty. I'll do it on my machine first and if successful, will see if it's possible to offer the option.

Since we are talkin' 'bout the screen I'll just throw in my agreement that it does the job. Doesn't blow me away but had I never used an RGB display before the M18x screen would more than satisfy me. :D

I definitely left work at lunch to get my R1 2 years ago haha

This time it came on a Saturday so I refused to leave the house lol. Wasted the whole day waiting for it - girlfriend thought I was stupid of course. And of course they came at like 4:30 pm :( Would have much preferred a 10am or so delivery lol

+1 rep for being the guinea pig and running the risk of warranty loss. If this works, then the m18x will be the true m17x r2 sucessor in every way.

With the M18x display calibrated, its a lot easier on the eyes than the RGB LED without calibration. I'd recommend people grab some calibration hardware because it gets rid of the slight blue tinge (though you lose some of the brightness) and gives far more natural colors.

I have done 2 17X r2's the first one i had to cut the brakets on the back of the screen to remove the panel then cut the glass on the front of the screen leaving a perfect bezel

the second one was easier just remove the front glass by droping alcohol on the double side tape to make it soft and that way just remove the glass without cutting nothing :)

In the first, did you use a brain surgical laser? ;)

But the second one is the most intriguing... can you explain a little further? Is it possible then to have a snap-in/snap-out front plastic-glass?

This can be very useful for me and my scholar faculty colleagues... As I say before ( sorry for the bump), I wish Dellienware use a similar approach as they use with those snap-in/snap-out color-change lid covers... If is it possible to do it painless with that front plastic-glass, then we can't loose the warranty and you can be accredited a place in our paradise! :D

Tonight, i picked up my M18x at Purolator depot.

Very nice laptop however I am disappointed with the keyboard.

The keys are small and the keyboard is located too far away. My M1730 keyboard, the keys are bigger and more accessible.

The 330W PSU is the same size than my M1730 PSU.

The M18x screen is much clearer and brighter colors than my M1730 WUXGA TRUELIFE 1920x1200

I am creating the AlienRespawn rescue media before doing a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate x64

What looked better, completely removing the glass or cutting out a perfect frame?

Also, when removing the glass completely, do you still need to cut the brackets?

I own the 17x r2, r3, and 18x and i have to say the 18x has a very nice display, r3 was brighter but everything looked blueish and washed out at max brightness, in terms of colour the 18x comes alot closer to the rgb led than the 120hz r3 display (to my eyes at least), anyways if you guys are interested i may be able to line up all 3 and snap a few pics.

General consensus indicates the Vertex 3 Max IOPS edition is fastest. Crucial and Intel historically have the advantage in reliability. With these all being new generation of drives however, no one can be certain of the latter.

Hi, The hardest part will be removing the Plexyglass for the first time from the machine because the material brakes real easy i broke one already and it wasn't fun

if you are careful and remove the glass the best option is build your own bezel with plastic that way you can keep the original glass intact for warranty purposes

I am sure dell can do some like snap on bezel but they just want to keep the glossy glass finish and is something a lot of people don't understand why

If you remove the glass you don't need to cut anything and all you need to do is build your own bezel to keep the stock intact

both looked the same because i cut the clear part of the glass to leave a bezel however i don't recommend this no more if you don't want to loose your warranty

Take a look here this was my best job at the time the glass was cut off leaving a perfect bezel http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...17x-rgb-led-matte-screen-mod.html#post6878076

    Fantastic!!! Arriba, arriba!!! Cheers!!!

But, 1) how did you build that bezel? 2) can you build it for others? and, 3) how you put the E2E plastic cover again when and if you need to apply to the warranty?

Last... Can you please, post some detailed pictures and maybe a tutorial 4 dummies on how it look and how it can be done?

I didn't build that bezel that was the E2E that i cut the clear part but i don't recommend that because you loose your warranty

I never build a bezel from scratch but with the right tools is possible you need a carpenter router and a lot of patience

I can't built for others because is to much time consuming and i have my own proyects going all the time sorry if you need help i can walk you to the process by email however i don't take responsability if something brakes

Katalin answer your question how to put the glass back :)

Thanks Speedy and thanks Katalin too. Another question on the same topic: After gluing with this 3M tape, it will look like original (for warranty purposes)? And... is there any way so the E2E can be put on (when gaming) and taked off (when working)?

As you see, my faculty colleagues and I are very concderned about this particular...

Guys a quick off topic question, but since this is the new playground where the most technically gifted members of NBR gather thought I'd ask it here ;)
Is it possible to use an external display (like a tv for instance) to get a completely different desktop, so that I can play on the Alienware's screen and chat or browse the internet on the tv?
Don't think so but maybe there's a software that allows it or some way to do it that I'm not aware of, coz this would be awesome :D
