Oh wow it sounds like your rep isn't the greatest. And also that they do things differently in Canada... seems like much less flexibility than the US reps. And also, the 25% EPP is only in the US, not Canada? Just a few days ago I was thinking of canceling and reordering with the 6990Ms, if the EPP could've worked here.

But anyway, here are my details, I still think you got a better deal!

Just wheel'n and deal'n with my rep. Said I had a budget and suggested to get it under we could downgrade the ram. I knew I was going to upgrade the ram so I tried to get some of my money back by downgrading :).

Good news: It arrived and it is very nice.

Bad news: After talking with support for 40 minutes last night, it turns out that for 580M SLI the driver is locked down, meaning Alienware only provides the drivers. Nvidia site refers you to seeing the vendor and of course exits. That gets worse in that when I installed my own SSD, the driver on the disc they gave doesn't support the 580M nor does the driver on the M18x site. I believe it is 267.04, but it was late last night when I had a chance to work on this. It is not the 267.64 which is on the Dell site, so that's another bad point. The disc has the same 267.64 that is on the AW site, and both are labeled for the 460M. Funny that the disc coming with the M18x would have an outdated driver, but that's not USUALLY a problem because you just go elsewhere to get it. MS Update has zero drivers for the configuration as well. So it's driver games, and I'm pretty likely 75% just to return it.

I'm in the process of checking with Nvidia as to whether the 580M sli will be a part of the Verde (from Nvidia) driver program. If the answer is no, or if the answer is silence, of if there is no driver available inside of 7 days, the machine goes back to Dell.

    Thought people should be aware.

Yup. Had that last night too after a clean install, no drivers for the 580m sli.

Please post if you find a solution. I still have my stock drive with install, so I may just end up cloning the drive (and creating like 5 backups) if I can't find a solution.

Son of gun eh? If it's not one thing its another. So dell locked the 580's or did Nvidia? How does a piece of hardware get locked? I'm thinking physically on the hardware or the bios?

So what you are saying is the 580 is so new the driver on the disk is out of date cause its only for the 460m when you did a fresh install on your ssd? Have you tried copying your hdd onto the ssd using acronis? That might work for you. Also, maybe you can extract the 580 driver from the original hdd and use that on the ssd if you dont/can't acronis?

Need the 2820 for Development as most of my stuff is computation heavy, and since I don't intend to overclock the $600 jump to the 2920 wasn't really worth it.

With the $600 saved I grabbed a Patriot Wildfire 240. I should be good for all the large file transfers, plus compile times should be a lot lower.

Nope. You are screwed. Purolator sucks to Canada. Mine says:
    2011/07/25. 15:42 In Transit in U.S.

I called. And was told Tuesday delivery. It will be in the aero drive warehouse on Friday but WE HAVE TO ATTEMPT DELIVERY AT LEAST ONCE before you can pick it up. Like I said, purolator sucks.

Hmm, well the Purolator sub-depot out by our place is open weekends (gotta love small towns) so if they get it out of the warehouse sometime friday I might be able to snag it saturday morning.

Nope. Because it's puolator drivers who supply those sub depots. Your shipment is one truck day behind mine by the looks of it. My truck is not supposed to be in Calgary until Friday. Then it gets sorted Friday night for Monday's trucks but unfortunately Monday's a holiday so it won't go out till Tuesday. Your truck will probably show on the weekend and get sorted Tuesday? Hard to say.

This could be a faulty Video card or screen. I would make sure your drivers are working and if it repeats on startup, call for an RMA.

Stay patient, guys. Trust me, this computer is really, really worth the wait.

I've been using computers since I was 9, and this is by far the finest machine I've ever seen/used in person. The build quality is unreal, the aesthetics are insane...It's just pristine. Top shelf.

I thankfully had no issues with my machine. No dead pixels, no keyboard flex, nothing.

Just got off the phone with my rep and she confirmed the HD Wireless cards are on backorder and causing delays. My order still shows "In Production" but it has been delayed. :(

Lucky you. When did you order? I ordered 7/18 with a EDD of 7/29. As of right now it is still "in production" but actually it has been delayed. I guess they are waiting to give me the bad news.

Is wireless HD good for anything other than watching Netflix on your TV without a cord (or Roku)?

Just an info piece for all you guys here - I placed my final order on the 18th with a delivery date of.... 17th August - but I was told by my rep here in Germany that this is just a "safe" date and they'll manage sooner. And today I noticed the Alien has been sent on the 27th :O So that would be 9 days from order to shipment.

For you information - I have the basic setup with only graphics changed (580M SLI) and wifi Intel 6300. Everything else is standard. I guess I should receive the package today or tomorrow....

I guess it really depends on stock. Some people have been waiting for their M18X with 580sli's since the beginning of July. Mine was ordered middle of July and they all got sent out at the same time.

Then for us Canadians............ DANG Purolator is another pain. Just checked my shipment online on purolators website, still NO change. it's still:

    2011/07/25 15:42 In Transit in U.S.

Right on schedule, according to purocrud. ETA Calgary depot, Friday, scheduled delivery, Monday, oops no sorry, thats a holiday, its now Tuesday. Buggers. :(

Did u return it for the replacement ? if so how long is the replacement deliveried ? i called my rep yesterday he told me that hes going to send me a box and label to return my original. so far i havent receive any notification email yet. i dont know what they gonna do with it. Are they going to fix or send me a new one ? My wife laughed at me for buying such an expensive laptop and it screwed up right after my first startup. Congratulation to people who receivied their order perfectly

No. That was the sixth XPS I received that was wrong so I washed my hands of the xps17. Never again can I recommend the 17. It's not a well designed machine. USB 3.0 port problems. Poor speaker placement etc :(

Hey Nhii ... not sure where you live, but If you live in North America, that is not a good price at all ...

Also, you only have teh gtx 460, not a good idea, if you are going to upgrade anything it should be the Graphics card, not the CPU or other parts ...

indeed find it bit od you got that price for that system
2630QM should do or else go for 2720QM
as for GPU at least 460 sli
but 6990 would be really nice and not to pricey

    i got 2720QM
    6990m XF
with 3 years waranty for that price
and i live in EU where they tend to price everything up ...

where you from and how did you order it ?

The 460 ... particularly single is just not a very good card, in comparison to other cards available and their price points. I am sure if you call you might still be able to get it out of Production, particularly if you are still goign to place an order and tell them that you will be returning the unit otherwise ...

You -must- negotiate with Dell Sales. Generally price out what you want online and then call in and tell the rep that you can afford something like 10% off the price ...

Personally I got 15% off mine ... and I know people have done better then that

at the very least, the 460m SLI ... but in all honesty the 6990 is where its at. YOu are better off staying with teh 2630 processor and 4GB of ram and upgrading the Graphics card to the 6990 ... you will get bettter gaming out of a 2630 4GB 6990 then you would out of a even a 2920xm with 460m and 8GB ram.
