Well looks promising for yours to be dispatched tomorrow!

I bought my RAM seperate... 16GB 1600 for £145. The ram upgrades in the UK are rediculous....would have been £500 and i wouldnt have 4gb 1333 spare after the upgrade.

nah no luck, I just checked. besides, I have next day air on there so Im not too worried. The earlier the better though you know?

Oddly, I had dell split the price on two cc. Ones charged, the other isnt. I hope thats not stalling the process.

Where are u getting it sent to? I dont think in the UK i had a coice of next day. Although that might be the standard. The tracking code isnt working yet. Says it might take 4 days to work.... Should be here by then though!

USA. I politely asked the rep if he could make a note to have my system expedited through the build process. He replied that he would do his best, and two minutes later emailed me to tell me he upgraded shipping to next day.

Should be the 22nd at the latest

Weirdly, even though we have nbd support, im stil getting stressed about the QA of these laptops. I hope they are perfect.

Mine was edd of the 23rd august...so im guessing as it is shipped it should arrive early.

thats my second worry. it seems like dell's quality is hit or miss, and from both reading and personal experience, Im not too sure I want the hassle of dealing with post sales support.

and to make it worst, the cs rep I bought from wont be around much longer so if I have to return and repurchase, im going to have to fight for the discount

I have to admit the QA of these machines is definitely not the best. Mine came with multiple build quality issues, though some small, they really should treat each and every machine with better care then they do. My touchpad wasn't even properly placed, the edges were sticking up and I had to press down on them to attach the adhesive to the base.

Im going to be ruthless about it. Any imperfection and I'm going to call in, record the conversation and get the employee's full name and ID. It's not that Im a stickler for perfection or a plain , it's that at the prices we pay you shouldn't have any problems at all, nor do I like to be punked around by some bored customer sales rep.

also debating on whether or not the 1866 plug and play is worth 30-40 odd dollars over the 1600, any opinions.

also getting a WD scorpio 1tb 2.5 inch 9.5mm drive as my main storage

and i have absolutely no knowledge of ssd's can anyone help me on this.

i'm just looking for reliable and fast and good price for the size in that order.
looking to spend between 200 and 500.

    any suggestions on the SSD?

The crucial drives are popular. Some benchmarks show that the 1866 perform better when benching, but nothing in games...but if its only a little more expensive ;-)

Seriously i would consider the 6990s rather than the nvidia setup....save a load of money and pretty much get the same performance...

    Just ordered a new m18x:

    - Core i7 2720QM
    - 16GB RAM
    - 1.5 TB Raid 0
    - Dual 6990M

All for 2900 Canadian after the big 520 bucks off dell was already offering. Plus, the extra I got off. Good purchase overall. Hopefully this laptop's battery life is better than the m17x R2.

I am aware that Dell charges out the butt for ram and HDDs but, it was 520 bucks of with 16GBs of ram and 1.5 TB of storage or no deal. Not a big deal in the long run since I just finished three big government contracts :)

Any UK people that can give us an estimate for delivery once the order says 'SHIPPED'

I have the tracking number which is doing nothing at the moment, and it is being shipped by UPS.

    M18x R3 doesn't even exist does it?

I would have bought the RAM seperate and saved yourself a fortune....takes 10mins to install 16GB...seen it on youtube...easy peasy. I would probably have done the SSD myself too...

Good to hear it's working fine!

You could save a few hundred $ easily by ordering through a system integrator and get many extra customization options ;)
If it's not too late, you could give us a shout for details.

My order was just changed to "order processing" yesterday. What does this mean?! I'm so worried it won't go through. Also, Fortnax. I really wanted to buy it through you as Alienware doesn't provide the same customization as you. Are you sure you cannot offer any form of instalment plan with your laptops?

You guys aren't gonna believe this. My order says Still in production. I ordered on the 13 and calling in gave me a ship date of the 24th with an Edd of the 26th. Well they tried to deliver it today at 201pmwhile I was at work and the wife was out.I can't go pick it up and it won't be delivered until teusday.

Why Tuesday cuz apparently the center near me isn't open on Mondays. So I can't even pick it up or anything. Oh and work gave me the next three days off by complete chance.......

Meanwhile the sticker they left on my door says will attempt delivery Monday through Friday. I think they need new stickers.....

Can any one point me in the direction of a good source/thread in which installing an ssd hdd and ram along with a fresh install ?

woah dude - I mean, Im no one to tell others what to do with their cash but $5k on a system like this is worthless.

1)Don't get 16GB of RAM. Get 4GB or 6GB. Normally, I wouldn't say you'd never use it like some people because I know quite a few that do suck up RAM with their workloads. But you sir don't :p And if you do by chance, just upgrade aftermarket RAM from newegg. Save you $400.

2)You don't need McAfee Platinum. Get out of town :D Just download Microsoft Security Essential and Malware Bytes when you get the laptop for free. Hell buy the Malware Bytes pro thing if you must.

3)You don't need Dell's 256GB SSD. Choose the stock regular hard drive, buy your own SSD off Newegg. You'll save like $200 by doing so. It's very easy to replace the hard drive, and the RAM like I mentioned earlier even more so. Hell, by doing so, you'll have an additional 300GB of hard drive space thanks to the 2nd HDD slot.

4)You don't need Databackup from Dell. I mean, you can if you like that but I'd recommend Backblaze or other cloud options. Much cheaper.

5)Gamepad and stuff like that? Do you really need that? If so, again, don't get that stuff off the Dell website. Seperate and 3rd party is cheaper.

I just hate to see $5,000 go to something that could be going towards better things. Like a M18x setup for $2,000-2,500 AND a kickass desktop rig for $1,000-2,000 and then the remaining $1,000-1,500 on whatever floats your boat.

Hey huys i just bought a m18x last thursday morning. I was told that i would recieve an email within the next few days confirming the order and to give me my order number. I was wondering how long it took you guys to recieve the email and is this normal? My payment would have went straight in as i paid by credit card.

Give it 3 working days, perhaps contact rep or sales near the end of the 4th day.

They have to have money cleared (not necessarily taken but reserved) and confirmation of delivery details if different from card address. Order confirmation appears to be a manual process and not completly automated.

    Enjoy.

Today has been such a downer for me. My order didn't go through. Yo, Aikimox. I might be able to get one from you if my loan goes through. I'll keep you updated.

Glad to see Dell customer support is as bad as ever. Placed an order with a rep through chat and it's already been messed up twice. Not to mention it's taking 30-45min per correction.

Looks like my order finally went through Correctly.

Getting the 2920xm and CF 6990's. Everything else is stock. I'll make small upgrades here and there, but I figured I'd max out the 2 most important/hardest to change things first.

Also picked up the messenger bag. I figured it'd be rather hard to find an aftermarket one for an 18".

I called them on the end of the 6th day and the rep told me i havent got an order number because I got a discount on it and it has to get the ok by the credit department or something . I asked her if this is going to extended the delivery time and she said that she will try and get the order fast tracked. I dont have much faith in that though. I have had some rotten experiences with dell like my last computers 12 week delievery time and the fact it had to be replaced twice.

I hope everything is well with the laptop, and I don't get the defective ones. I hope to game with the 18 inch beast soon. ^__^

I just received my replacement M18x yesterday and just found the screen to be defective. If you push on the middle, you get a rainbow effect all over the middle. This is the same effect on a bad screen protector where there is not a good seal. I am returning the M18x for the second time and will likely just ask for a refund. NOT A HAPPY ALIENWARE CUSTOMER!

imperfect screens are very common....even my 2006 55" plasma tv has a dead pixel and this tv cost me over $3k back then. and i am not sure why you would even press on the screen anyway.

First off, I noticed this when I was checking for bad pixels and as I was walking into a dark room, I noticed a lot of light distortion holding the screen and any pressure at all on the back edge. I thought that was odd so I touched the screen and what a mess. The screen was not manufactured correctly. I have another M18x that belongs to the wife and it does not have any issues as such.

I would not just push the screen, but given I found this defect, I am not going to live with it. This is a major screen defect, not just a dead pixel which I would also send it back for as well.

Well. I just spent the last 4 days arguing with dell customer service in order to get my credit card cleared with them. SO much bull. Hours of my life, wasted being on "hold", jerked around from department to department, and even being dropped and having that mocking recorded device telling me to "hang up and try again", when i'm spending over 3000$, my hard earned $, on them. They kept coming up with problem after problem, telling me that "everything is okay and good to go" when it really wasnt...

I finally got so pissed, that the poor guy who had to deal with me (100% didnt deserve my attitude btw since he couldnt do anything) i threatened that if the order wasnt verified and on its way to being built by the end of the the day, or if there was a delay in shipping because of this that i was canceling my order. He got ahold of his manager, and transferred me to the credit department, which gladly informed me that the credit card HAD been approved, and then shot me over to order financing where they verified my order.

Too bad it took me threatening to take away my business in order to get them to solve the issue. The poor guy i originally yelled at actually left me a message stating that my laptop was being built and was 100% on schedule for its September 9th delivery date. Also that he would track and report every stage of the process. Kinda made me feel like a ****, but they have my 3300$....

With that obstacle out of the way, it will be a bad day for them if it has any significant problems, either physically or with shipping. I hear theres some good benchmarks to run, like thermal and performance to verify the laptop is fully functional.

Anyway, do tell me that my situation is unfortunatly rare/unique, because i hope dealing with them isnt going to always be such a dire strait. I have a 1 year advanced warranty, as it wasnt THAT much more and i hear its coverage helps influence slightly better service, specially with replacement.

I had originally ordered an m14x, but upon arrival it had some cosmetic issues, dead pixels, and enjoyed black screening on me, a lot; so after about 24 hours with the system I returned it. It took Dell 16 days after confirming they received it to refund my account, but today I woke up and there it was and I was back in business(Must have built 40 machines on their website while waiting, and finally decided to go with the M18x).

I got in touch with a US Rep and assumed they would show a little sympathy for my troubles, but man was I mistaken, this guy seemed like he could care less about me getting a new system, or how long it would take to get it. After he told me it was impossible to get a discount or free next day shipping, I thanked him for his time, and called up the Costa Rica tech department. Not only did they apologize for all the hassle, but they offered to rush the build of my new system, and to overnight it to me for free. I had a 17% EPP discount coupon a family member gave me which really helped with the price(I owe them one awesome Birthday present) I don't know why a tech team can hook me up better than a sales rep, but I assured this guy that from now on I am dealing directly with them and thanked him for his excellent service. I am also writing an email to his manager to let him know how awesome this tech truly is.

So here I sit, waiting, and grinning, as patiently as I can for this awesome system; it isn't maxed out, but she should run great none the less. Here are the specs.

So, thank you, everyone. I hope you all have great luck with your rigs, and thanks again for sharing your knowledge!
