Well that sucks, seeing as I bought the same CPU from the same seller last week.

I was going to wait till my next laptop arrived to test it, but it looks like this CPU will end up getting shipped back.

    I didn't even know there was an i5 2520QM.

3920XM samples ..been told 2-3 weeks. We're going to be publishing a review of the 3920xm if they follow through with sending them to me in a few weeks and provided it works in an M18x.

Ah so you were the other buyer huh? Good thing is this guy was apologetic and sent the money back right away today + shipping costs to return the CPU. Problem is paypal withholding the money, I'm guessing they like to sit on people's money to earn interest.

It's good to hear that he was quick to refund completely.

So the CPU you received was the same one as in the auction's picture? I thought that the dual core i5 Sandy Bridge CPU dies were smaller than the i7 ones.

    Weird.

Yeah it was the same one in the picture. Maybe you got lucky with a 2920xm, who knows? Plug it in and find out if you have access to a computer that can use it.

Maybe Dell will release the new bios support soon that would be great than those 3920xm's really can be tested.

I think they already did that back in A03 - if you look at the fixes and enhancements, its says "adds support for new processors" or words to that effect.

    Edit to add picture.

Possibly so - dont know if a bios revision, purely for slightly higher clocked cpu's, would be required - that's why I thought it referred to IB.

Ivy bridge will need the bios to have a very slight addition to be able to drop an ivy bridge 3920xm into the M18x

I seriously doubt Ivy Bridge processors will end up being truly HM67 compatible. In fact, I would not be too surprised to see technology incorporated in the final product to prevent compatibility. That would not benefit any OEM and I expect Intel will require a new chipset to keep new PC sales moving rather than facilitating legacy upgrades. It would benefit consumers and possibly Intel (to a small extent) to have HM67 compatibility, but it would be to the detriment of Intel's biggest customers (OEM). It would also be counter-intuitive for an OEM to build in any level of BIOS support to facilitate it even if Intel allows backward compatibility, because they would sell fewer computers. At the level of making good business decisions, it would be completely understandable. At the end of the day an OEM is in business to make money, not facilitate upgrades that cause them to lose money.

Brother Fox well said. John I did and I've been trying to find time for it. From quick check of it I may not have a 5ghz chip... It is throwing 000009c bluescreen or simply freezing. My last one through the 000124 or 0000101 when it was volt related and pretty much anytime the chip couldn't handle the speed... This new one keep throwing me 000009c. I don't have my hyperx in... At those ranges John can the stock dell ram cause the system to lock at high frequencies? Its been strange... any ideas? I know chip could just support lower frequencies but it's not throwing the error codes in used to when tjatrwhat it was.

I agree Mr. Fox - sad, but true. Its all about the money and not about making peoples purchases futureproofed. Its a great way of making money because if you want the latest cpu, its likely the chances are that it will be "sorry mr customer, you will have to upgrade your laptop AGAIN" kinda scenario.

I ran with factory ram and timings and it still faired well.

What speed are you at when it starts throwing these error codes?

Well seemingly when working towards my last wprime 32m in 49x or 50x 4.9ghz range, running less cores running toward my last super pi and 1 core pushing toward cpuz validation... All those ranges meet me with that error code. Tried stock timings stock mem volts then lower mem speed and increased volts... Baseclock stock still shows same result

    It's not the memory.

You need to juggle the voltage around. How high of a multiplier can you get on 2 cores?
I'll do it with you using mine. let me know your settings.

Seemed 50x was possible but at 99.4 bsclk and I forget the voltage ot was about half range up to 3/4 so tried around 50 flex etc to maybe 70-73 flex lol tried 99but lol we no that had no effect at all. I will be at my computer around 11:30 under 30min I'd be glad to start at a range you suggest...
C u soon if your still free in a few
49x @100.1 wprime 8thread couldn't even go without the same error... This was going even as low as 25 flex and as high as mid 30s...

Hey John just a quick question what does the flex ratio overide do in layman terms , i realise the flex vid is voltage and i assume you start at 0 and work you way up as needed anyway john thanks in advance , just want to get this 2960 smoking , i have installed the unlocked A05 BIOS so anything i can do with that ? , have searched but nothing really straight forward and want the chip smoking not melting :)

    That about sums it up...
Just set primary plane to 1050 in bios
Set 45x across the board and no flex.
Then give wprime 32 a run and see what happens.

    Yes.
    And primary plane = amps
You need amps to get past 45x on all 8 cores.

Brother John , well first run on what you said , it stayed above 4.5 for the full run according to CPU-Z , and my time was 7mins 43.702 secs a bit slow lol , but it completed with no problems highest temp was about 61 degrees on the cpu using speedfan , whats the next step my Brother .

What are you talking about??? That's a great run for only 45x. And that puts you in 3rd place. :D

Now you goto 46x and 5 flex and do the same run again.

You will need to have xtu installed to up the multipliers higher than 45x.

Hi , will do that , just one problem in intel xtreme software ,my non turbo rate is now 25 for some reason , have tried to put back to the default 27 but after reboot it says some settings can not be applied and it stays at 25 any idea why that is? , if it fails at that rate 47 do i just increase 5 at a time until it does ? , obviously monitoring temps , and cheers again brother john most appeciated for you kind assitance.

not sure how I can increase the gpu score though since voltage is limited at 1.1V, is there any work around to get a better gpu score?

You need to increase those GPU Clocks ... you might not be able to ... depends on your chips.

But make sure you are running Hwinfo or Speed fan to force constant max fan speed, and see if you can increase those clock rates ...

You may have changed it in the bios. Check there first to see it is set to 27.

    Looking good Brother Ahmadmud!.
Your gpu score went down though. We need to work on that part next.

Thanks John for all the helpful tips and advice on o'cing :)

I am running 40x across the board and I think terry702 is around 45x which is why the CPU score is high

Regarding the GPU score, thanks for the fan speed advice, I think I am able to go higher to 835/1188 but that's about it. Maybe I'll have better luck with the newer drivers as soon as they get fixed since they have been BSODing since 11.11, I really hope it is fixed on the new 12.1

do you recommend any specific driver version?
