not a repaste...but you need to check how you screwed down the heat sink.

it took me a minute to get it back the way it should be. i had to hold it down in the center and then start screwing the screws in place.

god know how many time i repasted this CPU ..
gotta agree with others that we have to be careful screwing down the HS in (1-4) order to get a better surface of the compound.

this is my idle temp average 46*C
and we using the same CPU 2920XM-ES2
my room temperature is pretty high 30*C++ without AC (got a modded Notepal U3 underneath my laptop)

Aeight HOPEFULLY tomorrow I find some time to actually do this ... Wife has me shopping and decorating and all sorts of stuff on top of the fact that this is the busiest time of year for me ... finishing off the semester and marking like mad.

Anyway ... thought I would share here too ...

    Just ordered Crucial M4 128GB and 8gb Kingston Hyper X 1866 :)

Going to be an awesome christmas break I think :)

    Hey guys,

Just so you know, ran vantage on my rig on Performance and got a GPU score of 32040 with no overclock with my GTX590. That is incredible performance from an SLI 580M setup as I saw scores higher than 33000 on this forum :D
Performance would be close to or on par with a desktop SLI 570 setup.

When my R2 dies on me (which it won't since I clean it inside/out every 2 weeks), I will join the M18X crew. Also, why is there no 120hz screen on the 18"?

Great community and thanks for the 320+ pages of reading :)

johnksss pushes those 580m's pretty hard, doesnt he? (he is the master of OC, of course!)

I imagine the lack of 120hz is down to manufacturer - who makes an 18.4 120hz laptop screen? - cost could be prohibitive to Dell but I would HOPE that we will see one at some point...till then, an external 3d screen is the only option....maybe something like the OptX 120hz AW monitor (or any 3d ready flat screen tv)

Haha yeah Johnksss sure knows what he's doing.
And yeah, I didn't think of price behind designing and constructing a 120hz screen for a single laptop. Makes sense :)

Ok ... ugh. I first tried just pressing down and tightening all the screws, no go. Then We repasted, tightened all the screws while holding down the center of the heatsink on the CPU ... still idleing too hot ... then we repasted again, but only cranked down the left side of the cpu, and slightly tightened the right (the pattern when we pulled off the heatsink was that there was uneven paste build up, as if it was not all forced out of the bottom left corner, the paste job itself was perfect) ... idled at around 77 ... just opened it back up, cranked down the screws on the right. Idling much cooler in general ... in the 60s ... but some cores spike to 70s .... not ok. This is frustrating beyond belief ...

Did put in my new Hyper X RAM ... only bonus. Have my ssd waiting, but going to figure out this CPU crap first.

    ***repeat image deleted (Shaden)

Thats idleing ... well, using internet explorer ... flat on a table, room is 20C.

Lets Try Again, this is running standard lvl 3 OC, just running IE, flat on a table top.

Like I said I am heading to bed, might have a few minutes tomorrow to look at it, but likely Friday or Saturday, busiest time of the year for me, marking and such. Exams right around the corner.

Well, I should be good to roll tonight ...and my temps are a little better than they were, but still weird at idle speeds

Wondering if its bios settings and not necessarily the contact of the HS to the CPU... but it could be either. I could try reseating it a couple more times and see what happens....

    Back to marking for now.

PS ... it is idling perfectly right now on power saver

    No OC on though

All the cores drop off to 8x in Thottle stop, Temps maxing at 56C ...

Soon as I kick it back to High performance, Multipliers rise back up to the 30s on idles and temps are over 70 on a couple cores.

Don't know if this will translate when benching, will have to see.

on A04 with default settings still idles as high as 74C flat on the desktop. in high performance mode of course. All cores idling at roughly 31.5X

Thinking I will pop back to unlocked a03 for benching.

yea thats outside in the cold ... and yea, not that fast as I thought.

Question, trying to get the SSD in, got it in, in secondary hardrive slot (easier to change boot order) I have my original backup on a Mem Stick, and I have my CDs ... which should I boot from in order to install WIndows to the new SSD ? Or should I just clean install from CD ?
