I thought A04 was made just for the sole purpose of bringing support to M18x for the 580m's... Could be wrong i posted over at bios-mods already to see if Ahmed would graciously unlock the A05 bios too. It always gets posted here and at Tech Inferno when it's been unlocked in the past.

Which benchmark are you asking for, Mai? 1280x1024 is not the default resolution for all benchmark programs.

I'm not sure how many do, but I know for sure that skygunner27 does.

that is correct. the first amd 30k gpu and over all score.

you would need an oem chip for that. the es only has about 90 watts unlocked and a 1.3511 voltage cap.

glad to see the slight advice helped. :)
    i concur!. thumbs up.
it started out like that but it worked far better for cpu over clocking...lol

Awesome. i just got 1550 with 6990cfx. i just noticed we have the same CPU.
I wonder how much higher we can get with the 580...

I am just trying to see what separates the two GPU's... :)

    Here's my run

    CPU @ 42x
    GPU @ 725 and 1730

Just as a reference I can try @ 750 and even 800+ (with moded VBios) if you want.

Yessiree... tess doesn't bog down the 580M at all.

Well, with the CPU that we have (2760QM) the 6990M CrossFire normally performs just a little better in benchmarks than 580M SLI... not much, but a little. With an XM CPU, the 580M SLI should romp all over the CrossFire setup. No matter what you do, they seem to be very close in performance.

As far was what separates the two GPU's... NVIDIA clearly has the edge on visual quality... the AMD graphics quality is not nearly as good. I can see visual elements in benchmarks and games that I never knew existed with the 6990M CrossFire setup. There is also something with the design of the NVIDIA cards and drivers that makes video smooth even with slow frame rates. For example, when running 3DMark 11, graphics test #4 is normally under 30FPS... and drops down as low as 18-19FPS in one spot. On the AMD 6990M CrossFire setup, it looks like low FPS... it's very choppy. Running at the same low FPS with the GTX 580M SLI, that same benchmark test at 18-19FPS is silky smooth and looks like it is running 30FPS even though it is not.

And, that's what I'm talking about. With the AMD cards it can't look like that without the benchmark score dropping like one of those cobblestones, LOL. The grass also looks better and the colors are more vibrant with the 580M as well. I'd prefer to have all that eye candy and an equal or slightly lower benchmark score if I have to choose. (I know I am preaching to the choir with John, Xen and Skygunner, but John brought out a great point that truly answers MAITAI's question about what separates the two GPU's.)

Guys... can I please ask that you put your huge images in spoilers so we can stay in line with the forum rules? You can change them to thumbnails if you want to, but using the spoiler tags is faster and easier after you have already posted them.

Cobble stones do not look flat at all. One more thing. My min fps was 35 but the max was 139, which is a little lower then your 143. My 3dmark 11 came out to 6146. What is yours Mr Fox

Mai... It's good comparing our systems with identical CPUs instead of comparing them with the XM procs. As you can see, the 6990M and 580M really are very close when it comes to raw horsepower... something we have been stating all along. When the 580M was way more expensive it wasn't worth the extra cost to most people. Now that there is under $200 difference, the eye candy that NVIDIA offers makes it well worth the investment. (Not even considering CUDA and other stuff that AMD doesn't have.) Before the 580M throttling problem was fixed, the gap was much wider in favor of AMD with respect to horsepower. The throttling was just killing performance on the 580M.

    Without any GPU OC (stock):

    3DMark11: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2760QM Processor,Alienware M18xR1 score: P6237 3DMarks

    With GPU @ 725/1450/1500:

    3DMark11: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2760QM Processor,Alienware M18xR1 score: P7186 3DMarks

Vantage: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2760QM Processor,Alienware M18xR1 score: P25265 3DMarks

Mr Fox. thanks I check the overdrive settings and my husband has the clocks set @ 740 / 1000 looks like the Max setting. anywho....
    3dmark11 was 6156
    Vantage and 06 23335ish...
both were almost the same... i did not save the last two. I can see now how some benchmarks are different. I ran that Auslog one and my score was VERY low for some reason.

I hope when i get my system I can fix the throttling ASAP, with no problems... :)

What are you using to overclock. we have Msi and Trix on this machine...

Check the link in my signature for the 580M Throttling Fix... you'll find the answers there about overclocking as well. The process is a lot more elegant than using Afterburner or Trixx. ;)

Plus, you cannot use Afterburner to fix the throttling problem because it does not give access to the P1 power state. I use MSI Afterburner for it's awesome OSD monitoring features, not for overclocking.

Is there a way to adjust the multipliers on Non XM CPUs?

Gee I love seeing the Intel Turbo meter gadget go crazy and spike during the BIOS installs.

I checked and the unlocked BIOS doesn't seem to benefit those without the XM CPUs. Oh well worth a try. I really wanted those unlocked multipliers LOL!

Check this out LOL! It was almost impossible to move the mouse around during the BIOS install. I thought the pic didn't save lol. I was like damm it where is the snipping tool. ;)

    Cheers. :)

Unless the 2820QM CPU has something different than the 2760QM, I doubt it. It's disabled with locked multipliers. Here is a screen shot of the stock M18x BIOS Performance Options Menu with a non-XM CPU.

it's under the power menu in the unlocked bios.
but the unlocked bios can also do more than just cpu over clocking.
