Mr. Cloudfire is very enthusiastic about Maxwell GPU.![]()
The GTX 750 Ti has almost 2x the efficiency of the Kepler GPU. I am not entirely convinced that it will scale 2x efficiency all the way to the top end SKUs, but it will be quite a bit more efficient than current Kepler GPUs anyway. If Maxwell is as good as they say it now, then 330W PSU might still be sufficient, provided the fact that Intel fixes whatever design issues they had with Haswell.
It's not just Dell, it's the OEM. If you are really rich, you can probably ask someone out there to make you a 600W PSU. Having higher power PSU is good, but another thing that most people don't mention, is the need for Dell to beef up all the power delivery components on the mainboard, for the CPU and the GPUs.

Mr. Fox can we add some more benchmarks to the list ie: XTU,PcMark7,Cinebench R11.5 to name a few?

Hey guys! My first shot at benchmarking. Didn't mess with XTU yet on my 4900, but I flashed slv7's 780m vbios and pushed it 180/400 on 1v. What do you guys think?

Great job brother Fox!

Nice job Mr Fox does that mean we can add PCMark7 and XTU to the list?

No adding to the list at this time till we actually get more people wanting to bench.
Mr. Fox likes this. -
So that you can keep track of your scores, choose one of your posts for cumulative benchmarks and keep adding all of your best scores to the same post. See the links in my signature as examples. You can post them in a new post so people see them, but once you have, click the link in your signature and add the screen shots and links there, too. Then if John decides to add more benchmarks he can always link to the same post for the leaderboard. That makes it much easier for John to manage the leader board with one link for all of your stuff and easier for you with that link in your signature as a point of reference. It's nice for other folks that click the link in your signature as well.

Yessir... thanks for the tips on PCMark7
Now I am wondering if I shouldn't grab another 16GB of Vengeance 2133 so I can have more than enough to go around. These volumes are both cached with RAM disks and there is a 2GB virtual SCSI RAM disk for temp files. When many benchmarks run they put files in the system temp folder. But, I think 2GB for temp files is going to be too small. The nice thing about this is the virtual drive disappears at reboot, so there are no "old" temp files... ever. The down side is that when installing some programs the temp files need to be there for the installation to complete after a reboot, so I will need to remember to temporarily disable that when installing software.

Edit: I just read on Mr. Fox's Tech Inferno post that the Package Turbo Power Lock feature is due to the new A05 BIOS update.Mr. Fox likes this. -
I discovered that if you have the "Package Turbo Power Lock" set to enabled it will cap the sliders in XTU and grey out the Package Power Limit fields in XTU. It will be capped at whatever you have your Turbo Boost Power Max and Short Power Max set to in the BIOS. If you click "Disable" for that, reboot and the option will disappear in XTU and the settings will be unlocked.
This BIOS is definitely an improvement. It's not everything we want, but having the default Processor Current Limit set to 190.000A instead of 55.000A is absolutely a step in the right direction. It was a pain in the bottom having to set that manually all the time with XTU or ThrottleStop.
I am seeing slightly better XTU benchmarks, too. CPU hits 140W without much effort and temps are still managed with Liquid Ultra paste. The CPU still turns lower Physics scores in 3DMark11 than my 3920XM, but overall there is good reason to be happy because the BIOS is better than it was before. I still need to check to see if Secure Flash was removed. I have to go find svl7's tool in the A04 thread at T|I and find out. Will do that sometime today. Not going to hold my breath on that, but hope springs eternal, LOL.
Here is a 3DMark11 Physics Test. Note the good temps with Liquid Ultra. This is not as good as 3920XM (over 11K at this speed) but it is about 200~ 3DMarks higher than it would do with A04 at the same clock speeds. So, moving in the right direction.

In Australia summer is coming to an end so I am starting to think about bench-marking again
So far I have a triple pipe heat-sink on the shopping list but I am trying to figure out which cpu I should be investing in. Obviously an OEM 3920xm is the best but... due to limited funds I'm happy to consider a 2920xm or a 3720qm QBC1 (unlocked)
So the question is how much better is an overclocked 3920 compared to an overclocked 2920 and can the unlocked 3720 keep up
Can you still modify the TDC and TDP on the 3720?
I'm thinking the 3720 is the best option as far as price to performance is concerned but I'm just not sure -
Dont let summer stop you :hi2:im an ozzy too!!!! Im kinda wondering what i could do with 4930MX......Mmmmm....thinking:yes:

haha summer is bit of an issue for me as I live in an caravan with no air conditioning

) -- 4930MX performance for less than half the price =
I need as many MHz as I can squeeze for FSX, apparently when Micro$lop coded the d@mn thing they figured we'd soon see 10 GHz+ single core CPUs LOL. What a joke. I don't remember exactly now but I think the 10 GHz figure was given as what it would take to run the thing with every setting on max, especially traffic density. It's one of the few games out there that is completely CPU limited, and all because of terrible coding. What a joke. Although I do wonder how AMD's FX chips would perform with that game, given that they OC like no tomorrow and apparently FSX likes those hertz more than anything else...

So the new Alienware 18 is really a performance drawback?
-
Yes, it has a tough time keeping up because the R2 is such a beast. You haven't been visiting this thread much, LOL. In most things the M18xR2 with a 3920XM or 3940XM and 680M SLI outperforms it... The 18 is a really super nice gamer's machine, but it has some power handling limitations that are holding it back from achieving equal greatness when it comes to more than gaming. If you only bench the CPU and leave the GPUs stock or switch to IGFX the 4930MX runs really well. When the CPU and GPUs start fighting over a small pool of available power resources it's not happy-happy joy-joy moment for either one of them.

So is the 3720qm QBC1 worth getting compared to the 2920xm?
-
Hi Kenny. If you get a good one it will be very similar to 2920XM, but it's hit or miss on QS and ES CPU quality. There is no true substitute for an OEM XM CPU in most cases. If you are fortunate and get a good one, yes it is worth it. If you do not it will not be worth it. If you are mostly just looking for a performance bump rather than competing for benchmark scores, then I say it will be worth it.
-
Thanks Mr. Fox, I had a 920xm ES which was competitive with DR650SE's OEM 920xm. Guess that was a good one!
Yeh not looking to break any records just a performance boost and some fun -
I'd probably stear clear of ES/QS. I have a 3920xm QS which needed a ton more flex than an OEM CPU.

Or just go over to Clevo P570WM as they already come with a duel 330W adapter setup.
Mr. Fox likes this. -
Just build your own dual AC adapter setup. That will save you about $3700 if you are not simply wanting it for number chasing. You would still need to buy GPUs, but the Clevo's dual AC adapter setup shouldn't be a major deciding factor if you already own an M18xR2. The only compelling feature that it has to offer is a more powerful CPU.
The Clevo P570WM is very powerful. I kind of want one and kind of do not. It's really nearly worthless for anything except benching and moderate travel. Bulk and weight are not the issue since I don't think the M18xR1/R2 is too big or too heavy. Construction is what has me most concerned. It is no secret that I love benching, so I am torn. The benchmark scores are very alluring. The things that are holding me back are:
- Unattractive "Box" Design
- Plastic Chassis (durability concerns for heavy travel use... plastic chassis laptops don't hold up well for me)
- No Switchable Graphics (i.e. horrible battery life if/when needed, so not well suited for business travel)
- No GPU Flash Failure Recovery (an M18xR1/R2 exclusive for laptops, requires IGFX and unlocked BIOS)
- Clevo Support and Warranty Service (no in-home or parts-only dispatch, depot only, slow turn-around... overall pales in comparison to Dell/Alienware support and warranty)
- Crappy BIOS Design (talk to svl7 if you want to know more)
It's a reasonable DTR if you want to be closer to desktop performance in something completely portable. For the same price you can build a desktop with the same chipset, same CPU, more capable video cards and PSU. I kind of see it as falling in the niche between the M18xR2 and a full-fledged desktop. That part attracts me because I love powerful desktops and laptops, but I hate the idea of being tethered to a desk to use a desktop. Feedback from a former M17xR3 and M18xR2 owner is that it's a powerful beast, but not anywhere near the product quality expected as a long-term Alienware owner. I don't want to make a $4,000 mistake on something that cannot be returned due to buyer's remorse. You can do that with an Alienware, but as far as I know Clevo resellers do not accept returns on a product that you decide that you "don't like" after the sale. -
^I'm pretty certain at least one of the resellers had a 30 day no questions asked return policy, although there was a 15% or 20% restocking fee. Although this was back in October (when I first joined NBR) so things may certainly have changed.
If that's something you can live with ($800 instead of $4000 mistake lol), I say hit up the resellers and see what they can do.Mr. Fox likes this. -
Nope, I am not going to torch $800. A guy would be better off selling it on eBay for a $300-$500 loss, but even that's a lot of money to risk on the unknown. I want an time-limited unconditional return policy if I am not satisfied with the product quality like Dell/Alienware offers... 2 weeks is enough time to decide if it's good enough to keep and that's what you get with an Alienware.
So, what I would like is to get my hands on one for a week or two and then decide if it's good enough. I already know the benchmarks are awesome, just need to reconcile those other concerns that I posted. Brother Harlon is selling his Sager and switching to desktop if anyone is looking for a good deal on a P570WM with 4930K, 780M SLI and SSD RAID0. He isn't really satisfied with the product quality or the lackluster support. I believe Clevorr came back to Alienware as well. It's hard to settle for less when you're used to having cake and eating it, too. -

I think you should seriously consider the idea of buying a P570WM, spend 2 weeks benchmarking/using it and write a detailed review. If nothing else I think everyone would love to see what you could do with the P570WM (think of the scores...). -
^^not ready to do it at this time... i received some feedback from a friend earlier this week that owns a P570WM and I might not even go down that road at all based on his opinions.
Here's a new personal best on wPrime 1024M - 158.573 sec
...a wPrime 32M personal second best run... 5.089 sec
A really good (but not personal best) Aquamark3 run...
And, a decent 3DMark11 run (not personal best)... with an excellent CPU score.
I cannot OC GPU any higher than 1125/1500 with CPU @ 4.8GHz due to lack of power with dual AC adapter. I have to lower the CPU to 4.7GHz overclock to increase the GPU beyond that point or it's tripping the breaker one of my new AC adapters on the dual adapter setup. I marked the one that keeps tripping at this point and will experiment with the other two I have. I hope that one is just a bit weak rather than the dual AC adapter reaching its functional capacity.TBoneSan likes this.
