Ah yes, typo in INF mod under strings. Funny... I have done that several times. It also works equally well on purpose.

    i7-4930k 1343 marks divided by 6 cores = 223.83 marks per core.
    A good i7-4930mx 1097 marks divided by 4 cores = 274.25 marks per core
My i7-4930mx 971 marks divided by 4 cores = 242.75 marks per core but with a lower overclock .. Depends on how I see it .. :D lol

Congratulations man! I tell ya brother Fox, it's hard not wanting to go out and get myself some hexcore fun. Money dictates otherwise right now.
You know the thing that disappoints me the most about my current setup isn't having GPU's that can't really be overclocked, it seeing my wimpy physics score on 3dmark11 thanks to W8.

Thanks @TBoneSan. I really like this beast a lot. The worst thing about it is the cooling system is not nearly as good as an Alienware M18xR1/R2/18. I really have to "baby sit" the thing to manage the temps and I am not used to having to do that. This is surprising, considering how massive the CPU heat sink is. Second thing that could be better is the BIOS. Not much there to work with. About like an Alienware stock BIOS after Prema has unlocked everything.

Nice run. The Physics and Combined scores of your 4960X appears to be what drove that. Quite a bit higher than I am able to squeeze out of this 4930K. Maybe around Christmas I will grab one off of eBay.

Prema's vBIOS is really good. I wish it had the Power Sensor in HWiNFO64 and Precision X. Not sure if that only appears when the slider is turned on or what. I like seeing that data output. Don't really need the slider itself.

@Santander - you do realize that with the Prema vBIOS GPU Boost is still enabled and that 1365 clock is actually 1463 under load?

My GPUs will not work with those settings using Prema's vBIOS, svl7's vBIOS or my own. Screen goes black every time. Tried in Win7 and Win8 using Prema vBIOS just now to confirm nothing has changed. I guess my 980M cards are the "gimped edition"... LOL.

@DumbDumb - no I have not, but stop and think about it and the reason might be obvious.

Is any overclocker/bencher in his or her right mind actually going to buy a turd laptop with a low-TDP BGA CPU welded to the mobo?

Alienware has made their own dreams come true. They don't sell anything any of us want any more. They only sell stuff that noobs, bubble gum gamer-boys and console converts can be suckered into paying money for.

Wow, that's not good. We already knew 980M SLI was better than a single 980 and 780M SLI better than a single 780, but that is pathetic. That really blow big holes in their marketing speeches about the Alienware eGPU being all that. As I have said before... can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear using an eGPU... er, I mean, "Graphics Accelerator."

Yeah they've really screwed up - They can't put their money where their mouth is. I don't know if it's due to the x4 lane limit or what but these new machines are pretty undesirable by almost all metrics.

I got my hands on a 4940MX for my AW18 since I figured that I won't be upgrading anytime soon with the SLI option gone from AW and BGAs taking over. I guess I'll wait for a company to make a quad-SLI laptop with a 800W PSU.

Here's the bench score - underwhelming compared to the 980M SLI + desktop CPU, but still quite good. RAM's running at 2133MHz (using the BIOS options) at default timings. I can probably squeeze extra 200-300MHz out once I repaste (used a cheap paste and did a bad job since I'm putting 4710MQ before I send it in for a broken screen / AlienFX issue).

Fans set to max using HWiNFO64 and Liquid Ultra + 17W/mK thermal pads in a cool room. There's definitely thermal headroom, but any more overvolting on the GPU side (+75.0 mV) starts draining the battery (in addition to AC) and then crashes when the battery is drained enough (usually around 94%) to not be able to supply enough power. It lasts long enough to run 3dm11 once or twice though, so I could definitely get higher scores (that are unusable).

    Thanks for the information.

Having also used HWiNFO64, I think the Liquid Ultra and thermal pads probably play a key role in lowering the thermal peak with fans doing a good job at suppressing the rest. Otherwise, in my experience with maximum fan output and overvolting the cards significantly, the temperature continues to gradually trend upwards into the upper 80s.

All of my gaming systems are due a repaste, so I'm definitely going to give Liquid Ultra a shot.

I thought you guys might get a kick out of this. I had never seen it until today. To my surprise, it actually works pretty decent. Sorry for the crappy phone video, but I was just looking for a quick way to demo this. It's called iDisplay and you can use an Android (or iOS) phone or tablet as a wireless (or USB) monitor to display hardware monitoring apps like HWiNFO64 while gaming or benching. It works as an extended desktop, LOL.

Just wondering if ram speed 1600MHz vs 2133MHz makes a noticeable difference for benchmarking 3DMark 11, Firestrike (etc) when overclocking the cpu ? and if so how much can it affect the score?

Hi guys, recently upgraded my M18xR1 to a 2960XM. At the moment it has TWO sticks of 4GB 1333MHz RAM in there, but I have available to me FOUR sticks of 2GB 1600MHz RAM.
For chasing benchmarks, is it better to stick with TWO sticks of 1333MHz or switch to FOUR sticks of 1600MHz ? (Both total up to 8GB)

    Thanks

I'd go with the 1600MHz sticks, Although it seems you wont notice it much unless you are into benchmarking your ram.

I have been playing around with my new 3920XM and I think I have hit a power limit of 97.24 watts. This is the maxumin power usage that HWinfo reports for my cpu.

I have set the power limit to the max (128W) in the bios (in the second advanced tab, the power limit in the first advanced tab i have left at 0) the power limit in ThrottleStop I have set as 120W so I'm just trying to figure out why I am stuck at 97w instead of 120W, does any one have any idea?

    sorry double post

    Edit: Update.
I flashed the A10 unlocked bios (was previouosly on A08 unlocked) which for some reason lets me raise the power limit beyond 128W and seems to have fixed my throttling issues

So some things I've noticed while playing around with XTU (they've probably been said before, but for benefit of future generations that don't want to go through 93 pages):

The "Core Voltage" sets the base voltage which is scaled according to the current multiplier, while the "Dynamic Voltage Offset" sets the flat offset. If we compare the settings 1.250V/0.000V and 1.200V/0.050V, they'll behave the same voltage-wise when at their max multiplier, but the voltage will be slightly lower for the former at lower multipliers. So, depending on your chip quality, you might even set the DVO to be negative and the Core Voltage to be slightly higher so that the voltage drops off more with throttling from the max voltage. However, the DVO setting sticks around while the Core Voltage gets reset to 1.2V upon crash due to OC, and you might not be able to boot (requiring a temporary CPU replacement for BIOS reset - I think it should be possible to get the BIOS to reset with a faulty RAM stick or a slower one if you've OCed the RAM, but I'm not sure).

Too much current will cause the adapter jack to overheat and the system to draw current from the battery even if you're within the TDP - basic physics, current is preserved and electrons aren't made inside the computer. I've found that for my particular setup, around 130~140A is as high as I can go while also overclocking the GPUs.

The RAM can be overclocked stably, but need fairly loose timings - I've gotten mine to run at 2465MHz@13-14-13-36-2T; I wanted to try to push it further, but the BIOS doesn't acknowledge RAS over 40 cycles, even though it reports as so.

No need to have a bad memory stick handy... see below. I use static voltage with Haswell and disable all of the overvolt protection crap. I lock it where I want it. Haven't had any instability or goofy failure to boot problems like I sometimes had using the dynamic+offset bull crap. I also set CPU input voltage a 2.000V using XTU.

So that works when the system has bad memory timing or other issues that doesn't cause the BIOS to reset by itself (7/8 beeps), but it didn't when I undervolted the processor too much - I think there was a discussion of this somewhere, but it's the situation where the machine has a black screen with the AlienFX lights on (no beeping or anything). I guess I'll try it again if it happens.

That fixes the problem with a system that refuses to POST and beeps due to bad CPU overclock settings, including core voltage set too low, or from faulty memory settings. Works every time for me. No need to swap CPUs, repaste and all that nonsense. Just follow the directions in the quoted post above.

Has any one been able to use the voltage control in msi afterburner with the 980M? I have tried enabling voltage control in the setting as well as in both msi cfg files (including accepting the eula agreement etc) I am also running have svl7's modified vbios

I have voltage control in EVGA PrecisionX and nvidia inspector but it would be convenient to msi afterburner seeing as I have that running for the OSD.

You're right. vBulletin posts with tables are messed up really bad in XenForo. I know a work-around for fixing simple tables, but a complex table like the leaderboard is too much for it to work. I spent several hours attempting to fix it and finally just gave up. A lot of my older posts with tables in them are messed up. I've only been able to fix a portion of them. Those that are too complex would need to be manually rebuilt from scratch using different BB code, and it's too time consuming to bother with it.

I copied and pasted the vBulletin code over here for anyone that wants to view what was there before XenForo.
