It is very sad that Alienware can no longer make such amazing claims with their new wimpy BGA turd laptops. They can use whatever graphics card they want to in the eGPU to help make it not as bad, but it is still not able to deliver full-fledged "desktop" performance like my 3 year old laptop does.Kade Storm and Papusan like this. -

Substantial difference... not sure how much difference the CPU is making on the score, but it's a big gap between 780M SLI and 980M SLI.
I'm not particularly fond of this game franchise, or for the entire game genre in general, but it is kind of a fun benchmark to watch run its course.

Nice. Pretty decent result for a single e-GPU connected to a laptop. Cool looking setup, too.
Would be amazing if there was a good way to fit two of them in that box.

The trouble is running out of power and shutting down, even with dual AC adapter. I'm using ThrottleStop profiles for benching in the same way I used to before I had a dual AC adapter setup, only at a much higher overclock than what possible before. I had about 10 or 15 power shutdowns to get that one X score. I don't like doing that so many times if I can avoid it. I'm not sure it is a good thing for the hardware, and we know it plays hell with Windows corruption. Thank goodness for Macrium Reflect... has saved my bacon from having to clean install many times.

Looks like my brothers could use some company. Just playing around with a single 980ti. Early day. I got a pretty mighty OC on stock voltages I thought. I think I can get +280 but these Nvidia drivers are problematic to say the least.

@Mr. Fox do you have that link of windows 8 updates that tend to inhibit performance? I think that might have something to do with it.Last edited: Jun 28, 2015 -
I'm using the same vbios except for the Titan X of course. That's a pretty good overclock on the stock bios, on the modified one you should be able to go an additional 100mhz probably on the core depending how well your card overclocks.
My physics score is low. The Alienware motherboard isn't the best and I am only running dual channel at the moment. Need quad channel.TBoneSan likes this. -
pretty sad when a post about what scores we get with are laptops has to turn to desktop stuff because of dells bs..
-
Yup... and, when NVIDIA retroactively cripples Kepler GPUs with cancer drivers and forces them to throttle like a big dog, that's really sad, too. Between the two of them, the lights are growing pretty dim.

Yeah. For a time it made good sense to for AW/Clevo Brothers to post their freshly built desktop/DRT scores. It was always interesting to see how they stacked up against our portable beasts. If anything it shows/ed how powerful these AWs could be when they'd still trade blows which desktop equipment.

Since we basically have the same CPU, I'm curious, are you getting away with 4.7GHz under 1.4V?
What are you hitting with the 980M's boost-wise?
Mine is in my signature, of note I should be at 22k GPU Firestrike but Win7 tends to run about 500-600 points lower for me here than 8.1. I suppose that's one of the things I'm actually looking forward to with the OS refresh, not having 600 points lower score than everyone else with the same hardware running at the same frequency. I'm sure keeping the GPU core under 50C helps a great deal in this regard; although GM200 doesn't appear to be responsive to additional voltage, you can secure another 100MHz or so dropping the core down under 50C. Oh and ASIC is 69.3%.
I feel fortunate that I received a sample that will do 1513-1526MHz 2000-2050MHz memory with no additional voltage, it seems a large number with 980 Ti are unable to secure more than 1450MHz and adding voltage doesn't seem to help a whole lot.
But yeah, 25k GPU is really impressive for 980M SLI, that's gotta be near GTX 980 SLI or better. I think you might have one of the fastest DTR's in existence. -
Yeah, the Eurocom Panther/Clevo P570WM is an Über Beast laptop for sure. I may have to snag a 4960X when my cash flow situation improves. I've got most of the top scores with a 4930K CPU and 980M SLI in a laptop, but I've hit a wall with that CPU. It's definitely an amazing 4930K sample, (thanks Brother @johnksss,) but the 4960X is--as the case almost always is with Extreme CPUs--a cut above an ordinary desktop K or mobile Q processor. I am still undecided whether to leave the laptop scene behind entirely or not. I may just save my money and wait to see if Clevo releases a dual-GPU laptop with X99 and 5960X. If not, I may just wait and build a monster desktop with a phase change cooling system instead.

@ Brother Fox what was your max gtx 780m sli 3dm11 and 3dmark firestrikre results? Also a general question. Does Gtx 780m Sli @1050~1100 in Gaming outperforms a Desktop GTX 970?
-
http://www.3dmark.com/fs/2330540
There are hardly any GTX 970 single GPU benchmarks on the Futuremark leader board. There is one invalid Fire Strike that is flagged for errors and only three 3DMark 11 results on a system with an extreme GPU overclock and a heavily overclocked 5960X. Looking at the 3DMark11 graphics scores, my best results with 780M SLI heavily overclocked would likely be better than a stock single GTX 970, but there is too little data to make a strong statement one way or the other.
Seems the small sample of benchers running 970 are running SLI. It is probably safe to say that most folks buying 970 desktop GPUs are not hardcore performance enthusiasts and are more likely looking for acceptable gaming performance at an affordable price. Otherwise, they would have purchased something more substantial that GTX 970. Basically, the same thing we see with laptops. Some folks are fine with second fiddle performance if it does whatever they need it to without costing an arm and a leg.
780M SLI is very similar to the performance as 970M SLI. http://www.3dmark.com/compare/3dm11/9329270/3dm11/8291584 -
Thank you bro. Just found out of gtx 970 max oced at 1500 scores around 13500 in graphics in firestrike. I am considering an egpu with pe4c pcie gen 3 for my m18x. Lets see might hold up and save some cash also.

I absolute love my machine right now (pics coming). It's nice having a buffet of parts I can choose from. But if a Hawell-E / Broadwell-E / Skylake-E 120hz DTR machine comes to town, and we're offered a future of upgradable MXM GPU's I'd probably make it my mission to obtain one pretty quick smart.
Things are actually looking a bit better than 1 months ago aren't they? I'm holding a torch for Clevo. Alienware have burnt their bridges with me... unless they bring a crazy 2011-x* socket to the party - it would be pretty hard to say "no" to that.Kade Storm, USMC578, Papusan and 2 others like this. -

Maybe that's why NVIDIA is trying so hard to cripple laptops and forcing 780M SLI to throttle with cancer drivers. Too hard for them to demonstrate progress when their "antique" MXM cards in SLI can nip the heels of NVIDIA powered single-GPU desktops. Hopefully, they won't pull similar driver shenanigans to cripple 980M SLI to make desktops look better. Then again, maybe NVIDIA already did based on what happens to 980M SLI when installed in an Alienware laptop. I still blame NVIDIA for that. Alienware didn't change their machines. The changes that broke everything where implemented by NVIDIA. NVIDIA is 100% responsible for whatever happened, not Alienware, as far as I am concerned... corporate sabotage. The cynical side of my persona is even starting to wonder now if the bricked Alienware LCD panels is actually a clandestine stunt for the same reasons. I so wish that AMD didn't produce garbage MXM cards.TBoneSan likes this. -
Yeah.. God help AMD. I wish they'd get bankrolled by company that would give them a decent R&D and a swift kick in the balls. I really should by supporting them, but they don't quite yet deserve my hard earned $$'s either yet / again. If they can do something special with HBM2.. basically beat Nvidia in performance (and we've seen no HBM1 failures by that time), then that might be a good time.
Unfortunately with MXM it feels like they raised the white flag somewhere around 8970m days.Kade Storm and Mr. Fox like this.
