$470...when I told them I wanted to upgrade my video card they said they cannot get the 4870s only the 4850s. I said, oh well I'll just take those then, lol.

Congrats on getting the cards .. I tried for months and nada so they must have got a fresh shipment in .... To bad i just shipped out my M17 to be sold and also let go of my Qx9300 as well ... No laptops for me sadly... The M17 was hands down my favorite laptop though even if the cooling was subpar under normal conditions ... Its a rock solid machine with very few issues and has tons of potential as proven by you ...

its not really a lock its the way its packed...

in order to do it we would need the program leaked from alienware / dell. im going to digg through with pbe again on the m17x one and see if i can find anything i missed. but it needs to be decompiled and then rebuilt. like with the m17 bios if you try to use pbe with it it will say no bcp's found and not open it. but i have the full bios with all modules from a manual dump...so far this is not possible with the m17x one...pbe can open it but can not remove the things we need to be able to use the intel utility from pbe. also be VERY VERY careful about flashing a bios re built with pbe sometimes pbe does not do a very good job and can be deadly to your system..

 

sweet mandrakes machine will murder the m17x with thoses 4850

argh thoses number will i get a qx9300 or or a blueray drive this holydays i setteled for a bluray beefor seeing madrake breaking records

 

Well just ordered a TLA2 screen for the M17 I am going to buy! Cheaper to get the TLA2 and a wxga then to buy a Wuxga lol, and will have an extra screen

I am now pot committed, this is going to happen! lol

Now to just get some of those 4850s after I got some in the bank....

 

are you getting the m17 from ebay store?

 

eventually....have to get this desktop sold first. Looking like that will happen on or around january 5

 

They did verify my purchase info so I'm guessing the system must be bought from Alienware.

 

things are looking up for the m17...wonder if alienware is taking notice...lol
if so...they may start upping the price like ocz did with their vertex series, once they found out it was a gold mine...lol

sell it on evga's site...it should go pretty quick. in the for sale or trade section....see if you can get some offers...if so...then that might be another way to go if you haven't done so already. i sold my gtx pretty quick that way.

 

hmmm. maybe John, got a couple locals interested so far but neither can pay until early january. The appeal of not dealing with shipping and getting paid cash is very strong though. And they will both 100% be willing to buy as soon as they got the money

 

Then what are you going to do when your M17 out-benches your 280s?

 

Realise the ATI cards are actually pretty sweet, and why I had much love for mine...to some extent I still prefered my M17 (decent HDMI audio etc).

 

Well, after I put 4850s into the M17 Mandrake, guess I will just have 2 really fly laptops

 

your M17x will sit in the corner gathering dust, lol.

On the brighter side....let the competition begin! It was definitely fun when we both had the 280s.

I am not a fan of sitting on the sidelines!

On the phone working on a replacement M17x as we speak.....don't look like I will be able to get them to up to 4870s though, unless this new rep is better. Been shuffled around to like 7 people so far

 

I doubt they will just change the video cards. What they may do is a return and reorder.

 

so alienware wont flat out do an upgrade huh?
well that's one place sager has them then...they would let you upgrade to the top new cards that we're supported by your machine, but you woul have to send it back to them.

 

I am out of return period. Working on getting a replacement sent to me and I will send back the bad one. Was trying to have that replacement come with 4870s in it but looking like that is a no go.

 

Ya it would be nice if AW did this...they dont. I would have to order 4870s for about $1k and then sell my GTX 280m's myself. Huge PITA

 

You can definitely buy the cards and upgrade. Obviously that's what I did with the M17. If the customer needs a new system and they do a replacement it usually has to be the exact same thing. If your lucky they may upgrade you after you receive it.

 

call back and see if you can pay a difference for them to put the ati cards in.

 

no, already tried, and that has cost me an extra hour of waiting since the manager failed to send me back to the same rep...

 

then maybe as drake said...
get the machine...hold on to it for a day.
call back and ask if you can now upgrade it. if they do...it's gonna cost an arm and leg if they dont accept the 280'm's as down payment.

or take a loss and sell the replacement and get a new machine with correct specs.

this is true scook. one big pain in the butt, but some times necessary...

don...the whitebook may still be an over clocking monster if they would have let some people get the 4800 cards to test in them...they would need to mod the heat sinks for sure!! and add a cooler with the bottom cover removed.. for extreme over clocking.....but i think it could have or still can be done....

 

God I hope I never have to do this BS again......

they are sending a new motherboard....bit dissapointing but it is something. been on the phone for hours now and ready to relax.....

 

the gpu heat sink is the same they ins fact just need the cards

in that case he is absolutely right .... 65c at idle on mine is a pure joke

 

I got my 3870s from my whitebook to idle at 37

 

how i can get my 4850 to idle at 55 when i remove the back pannel but never really got under that

 

just need to add lots of copper to the heat sinks and heat pipes..if at all possible. then a nice size fan to help cool it all.

 

I will be meeting one of their silly techs sometime this weekend it looks like. Then he can watch me do the swap then all will be well (enough )

Then I focus my efforts on getting an M17!

 

Don't forget you can get the XMP memory for the M17. Also my GPUs idle in the low 40s with normal usage. CPU is in the high 40s.

 

The 4850s generally tend to run fairly hot (although i've noticed there even hotter if you run a second display .)

i *may* be able to get a empty whitebook from someone at ocz without any gpu's at all. is there a way mandrake you think i could somehow get the 4850's? while i would LOVE the aw m17 much better especially the skull cap the price may be way to good to pass up

 

First thing he did was look up my system. I don't know if he did that because it's their policy or to verify what I had so he knew what he was dealing with when talking to me about it. Best bet would be to still get it through Alienware eBay. I received 10% off mine because of bing cash back. It was still a good deal.

If you end up getting it I can try calling again.
