There is a huge difference between 30 and 60 frames per second ....the human eye can detect up to 60 and after that its pointless

I think 72 is the new number, and I think it is higher than 60 anyways because I stopped at Costco recently and checked out the HDTVs there. They had a couple of 120hz ones next to the older 60hz versions and the motion in the pictures are more fluid in the 120hz screens.

Hah, hadn't really noticed it even with my Samsung DLP, which is rated at 120hz.

heheh i am 37 years old, 10 years ago everybody says 30 fps is enough, now 60... marketing departments are working well..

they must sell us new technologies :)

i am not taking that because i am fine with 30 or 40.. i am really dont feel the difference :( maybe old eyes.

ok if you use silver then repost to us your results. also i know the human eye can see 60fps. but i love to see higher then that in fraps. i love when i am over 100fps in games when i'm maxed out completey. because i know my computer is going to last me longer. if you are hittinh 30fps now what do you think is goi g to happen in a year or two.

i am not hitting 30 :) min 50 or so in windowed mode.. and it is okay for me because my gpu heat is 20 c lower then fullscreen in windowed mode. i am not suffering heat and stuttering problems. thats why i am saying min 30 fps is enough for me and also majority of the animation and movies are 30 fps (3-5 years ago)... why need more with problems in alienware m17 atm.. if the bios update or easy way to fix this stuttering and heat problem ofcourse i want to play my games 70+ fps... but atm it is not possible w/o problems.

over 60 frames causes screen tearing...i need vsync on and 60...but its a strong 60fps....it wants to throw out 100 but doesnt so it will never dip below 60

I fought as hard as I could to get an answer in regards to an update, or any future support. According to RyderOCZ over in the OCZ forums, it is in fact Flextronics job to write the bios update, and hardware fix algorithms for the M17/W840DIY.....According to his take from OCZ corporate, there will be NO future software support of this product from OCZ. Of course I see that as an opportunity to mod away without consequence. For reference, you can check out the posts here.... http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52160 . I fought tooth and nail for everyone here, while remaining civil and professional, in an attempt to try to get a corporate number. I am sure that if I would be able to talk to a head honcho, I could persuade a board room full of them to get this taken care of. Right now I am considering my options, and three attorneys are helping me to weigh the possibilities.

30fps as an average is "good" but not great

That is because it will drop sometimes, and rise sometimes.

The inconsistencies in this rig speak volumes about how outsourcing is a very bad thing, dont get me wrong, the hardware is top-notch, but there is a serious hit in the software department. I for one am seething mad about this, to shaft the consumer in such a way, and expect no consequences. I've even heard some customers with what appears to be a form of Stockholme syndrome, defending their actions by stating it's never been expected for them to support the product they accepted our money for, with the exception that it works when we buy it. Well it does NOT work, and thats why I feel confident that there is a resolution coming down the pipes. If for nothing else, than the principle that I payed good money for a product, with the understanding that it would work consistently. If Microsoft cant get away with anti-consumer practices like this, what made Arima/Flextronics believe they could?

I would like to thank everyone for ongoing support, and for taking valuable time out of your lives to read these posts, and follow this circumstance, hopefully to the resolution. I understand that I could be labelled, and as long as it gets results for the paying consumer, I dont care. I am called son, father, husband, soldier, and brother, and I intend to define those titles to the fullest and to the best of my ability, with understanding, proficiency and standing for what I feel is right. This practice of "obscure handshakes", and " gentlemens' agreements" that leave the consumer to "foot the bill", so to speak in regards to actual product as well as services rendered(software stability support) needs to be put in check while taken in stride. I understand that this is an OEM situation, but if no one says something now, and sets the bar for the future of business practices, then what is to stop these anti-consumer agreements from continuing well into the future, gradually increasing in the corporation's favor, and decreasing in the consumer's favor until buying a falsely advertised product and being stuck with it, is the norm? Sorry for the rant, but all you guys that paid for a gaming notebook are what drives me with resolve to see this through to the end... Thank you and have a wonderful night.

    good news and bad news.

i copper mod my notebook on the northbridge. but i installed a bad driver. i really bad one. i keep blue screening and when my external is plugged in threw my e-sata i stutter. the error i get is jraid.sys and i am going to see what's up. i get lock ups and it's pisses me off. this was before i put the copper in.

i don't know what the probelm might be. also i notice when it is searching on it. my computer just freezes. it also afects my other hdd's. can someone plug in a e-sata drive in and see if the same results happen.

in your message (my phone is still being replaced i should have it tomm they didnt ship it till yesterday late so i will get it tomm morning they said.) you mentioned using a piece of copper pipe??? how did you flatten it? it has to be EXACTLY FLAT with no imperfections or kinks in it. i would have used a flat piece not anything from a pipe. just curious. sorry my internet has been wacko today and i have had a hard time even getting on the forums unless its just the forum again..

this forums has always been acting up. you should of emailed me. i would respond faster. ok maybe i should go to home depot and it. lol. i have pictures but not home at the moment.

remember my issue right now started to happen before i used the copper mod and it is still acting up. do you have a e-sata drive to test this out on?

of there is some imperfections on it. it will sound very unperfessional but now it temp until i go out and get something better.

i bought a copper pipe and used a chizzle(sorry not familar with tools names. its a metal long rod and it is rough all around and you can use it to saw down anything) then i sawed sawed sawed and then used until i was about the size of the northbrigde. then i was a pliers and rip it out of it. then i used the hammer to beat it straight on another metal flat surface. then i sawed it down so it was flat and had pretty straight egdes. then i opened the computer and saw that it was to big and the used the pliers and broke into two and then beat it down again and then sawed it so it was pretty again. then i bent the edges so it can touch the heatsink and just turned it on. i also added paste to the heatsink and the northbridge and slapped it together.

anyone want me to work on there computer. lol. i just read over it and it sounds so bad. i don't even want to acknowlegde it was me who did it. don't think of me badly i just was in a hurry and wanted to get it in. i will do netter next time. lol.

just make sure with a straight edge like a razor blade that the piece you made is perfectly flat it has to be THAT flat.. dont use a ruler or something use a actual razor blade and make sure there are no ripples in it. if there are and you tighten it down you even stand a chance of cracking the northbridge die from the added pressure there.. you also may have used a piece that is simply to thick and now the heatsink may not be sitting on the cpu right either. it may be lifted up a bit off the cpu dies...

i just switched providers and lost my old email address you had so i didnt have your email stored any more. ill send you a pm with my email ill be using now..

Mr.Moo that heatsink is enormous (in width).. 50x50mm and the fan is also too big so it wont fit.. and there are smaller chips under sompe plastic foil arund the main nb die and if you put something over that and heat it im sure that would mean trouble.
And my heatsink for the nb wasnt so tiny as my gpu ones.. the one on the nb was 14x14x 32mm.. so the fins were much higher (better heat dispersion than lower fins) than on the one youre suggesting which is only 14mm high (but wider yes).
And about the fan.. i looked around and couldnt get a small enough one (25x25mm or smaller).. so i tried it with the back off and blew on that ramsink with an external fan and it didnt make a difference so i dont think a tiny internal one would do it.
I am talking about a 57C to 83C in a matter of seconds.. i touched the ramsink and it was blazing hot.
Also the cut cpu cooling was performing about 5C worse at idle than before so it was no solution either.
Youre welcome to try it but im done with seperate solutions for this.. in my oppinion the nb simply cannot be cooled with its seperate heatsink.. i think i understand now why they made it the way it is.. the space limitations of the notebook just dont allow another good heatsink with fan to be mounted on the nb. The whole inner design would have to be changed to make that possible is what i believe (another side hole for another big heatsink with fan like the cpu one).

In all honestly, I don't know how we've come to the conclusion that this is NB heat related, expecially since my lappy's temps never top 65C EVER, but I get crazy game (WoW) stuttering on occasion.

it's not the north brigde heating up. it's the quad being bigger then the dual core. making the heat sink not settle fully on the north bridge.

So if the heat sink wasn't sitting right on the northbridge wouldn't that make heat dissipation of the NB less i.e. the NB would heat up?

it makes the northbridge not properly cover with the heatsink it is not touching. and it makes it unstable.

you have a lower temp and you stutter and rib41 witht he x9100 hit 80 and he's fine.

and the copper covers the needed space and covers the NB and properly connects it to the heatsink and tada.
