Alas, I don't seem to have any bios downloads available on my hive, only an update to nero and my pro wireless mini card. The bsod however, continue unabaited...

I tried phoning the help desk, but was just told that windows 7 is not supported and so no additional help was available.

    Hi, thanks very much.
It seems to blue screen randomly, I haven't tied it down to any function.
Once while accessing a folder, once while watching a movie, once while idling...

I was running xp on this machine and so flashed the bios for that.

I also have 2 "Base system Devices" in my device manager which are without drivers. I have installed all the drivers linked to on the front page, so I'm pretty stuck on what to do next.

    Cheers

if your graphical drivers aren't up to date, then i suggest doing that. mine are 179.67 and they've been doing well so far.

as for the base system device drivers, i'm not too sure what they could be if the microsoft update will not find drivers for them. which version of windows 7 did you install?

you perhaps might want to wait if you have a RC version until it officially releases and there are updates, or, if you're a student get an MSDN version.

Yea, my graphic card drivers are definitely uptodate and recognised. Windows update can't find a driver for the base system devices.

I've installed the retail version of windows 7 ultimate, 64 bit OS.

The bsod happened 3 times close together tonight, so I got to read a bit more of it before the system restarted. Apparently the acpi.sys file was the problem.

    Thanks again for the help.

Very strange, I've been using Win 7 for close to 2 months and it has never Blue Screened. It also picked up my 7950s up right away. What graphic cards are you running? Also are you using a clean install of Win 7 or an upgrade?

Base system devices are due to the XP BIOS, you need the Vista BIOS to remove them and you'll get some new devices installed automatically which should leave you with no missing drivers in device manager. Check MyHive for the vista BIOS and if it's not there then phone up Alienware and get them to send you the Vista BIOS via e-mail

Thanks very much, at least it's solidified what I actually need to do.
Unfortunately, 2 support calls later and I'm still nowhere.
The most recent news is that the guy presently on the customer support desk "can't find any bios updates and there's no one there to help him".
I've tried emailing support, but they simply stated it wasn't possible to help.

Does anyone out there have the bios for vista? or know where I can download it? I would really like to be able to use my laptop again :)
    cheers

I'm really glad I have found this topic, it helped me a lot.
I got a single 7950 gtx in my m9750 so I wondered if there is a good display driver for that. The official driver from nvidia (179.48) is about 10 month old and still beta, but the new 195.39 is only for the m8 series... I tried to use a driver from laptopvideo2go but I'm not sure if it is the right one (as if I understand them correct, you could use every driver with there modification, right?)
So could anyone give me a suggestion for a good driver (mainly gaming) please?

    system
    intel T7600 2.33 GHz
    nvidea go 7950 gtx
    4gb ram
    vista 32bit (sp2)

ps: a very big thanks to eightd for your hotkey tool. thx man, it's great.

    hey paranoid!

Yeah, it sucks that NVidia wont support their older cards anymore. But the truth is I am able to game on the 179.48s 90% of the time without any problems. You can also use any laptopvideotogo driver that they have hacked, even the 195.39. I run two OSs on my m9750, one with the last supported driver (the 179.48) and one with the latest driver, and both work fine. it just depends on the game on which one will run better for that particular game.

thx for your answer rsgeiger. I use the 195.39 driver and it works fine until now.
May I ask which OSs you use? Is one of them the new Windows7? Coz i consider to install it in 64bit. Do I get any benefit of it (except full use of 4gb ram) like faster boot time, more performance in games or the new things like taskbar, paint and so on?

    Good Morning -

Eightd: Thank you for your post and keeping it updated. I use it regularly as I do many OS reinstalls. One thing that I didn't see on your post is the drivers for the Ricoh medai reader. I just reinstalled Windows 7 x64 and found the drivers for it that work perfectly if you wish to add it to your list. Here's the link:

    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&fileid=344558

They are for the M17, but I guess they happene to have the same reader as since I installed the drivers, I've had full functionality.

    Thanks!

After reading some of these posts, I can see that all of you are m9750 enthusist as I am. I'm really glad that this thread exists and just subscribed to it.

As I posted a minute ago, I am running Win7 x64 Ult and have been running 7 for a few months now (via Technet). I have 4 gig RAM and and Intel X25-M 80g SSD in slot #1 and a 500Gb storage drive in #2. I have dual 8700's and using the 186.81 driver.

Without a doubt, the upgrade from a 300Gb RAID 0 7200 drives to the Intel X25-M SSD was the biggest speed boost by far. I really wish, though that I could use faster RAM.

My questions is, what do you guys suggest as far as the next step to get better performance? I've read about overclocking (from eightd's signature) as well as a few other things like custom video drivers - but wanted to ask you guys. The only hardware that I can think of that isn't maxed out on my machine is the CPU which is the 2.16Ghz as I think the max is like 2.33. Not worth the ~$350 in my mind.

    Thanks!

Well, it does seem you are really maxed out in my book. The CPU upgrade is not worth it, like you said.
The only thing you could really do is to try and find some ATI cards and try to install them. But this is really hard to find, and the BIOS wasnt quite made for them. So it is certainly a "do at your own risk" item.

That being said, I still have SLI 7950s, and I still get great framerates. Just installed Dragon Age Origins on High details and a native resolution of 1920x1200. Is always above 30fps. It sort of sucks because my geek lust wants to move on to a M17x, but the m9750 is just so mighty I dont have a need. :p

Well that great for you, I also can't wait for Dragon Age (will get it soon  )
But with only one 7950 it won't look that good. Is there any way to get an second 7950? Will it be worth it? I searched google for a while but found nothing. Mhh would have been too nice...

Does anyone have the Webcam driver for 64-bit Windows 7? I've tried OP's and several other ones I found on google but none of them work with my new OS. I either get an error message, or it only displays all black or green. I'm not even sure what the hardware is... whatever came standard on the m9750? Thank you so much for your help!

Well, here's my camera situation for my m9750:

I am using Windows 7 x64 and was about to reply and say that I simply used the drivers from the "My Hive". They did install and device maanger showed them as working, but I decided to test it first. The only app I could think of that would use the camera was MSN Messenger which crashed when it tried to launch the camera (I went to setup video and audio i think).

I'm going to play around with a couple more and will let you know as I haven't even compared my installed version to the version at the beginning of this post, but please also post back if you get them to work as well. Thanks

to bzowk about the second video card:
I see you point if you only have one card, but the good news is that if you are really concentrating on Dragon Age, one card will sill be enough for native resolution and high settings (just watch out for shadows and particles). I say this because I was playing Dragon Age for 2 days on my laptop WITHOUT a SLI profile, so for that time it was only using one card.

To tell you the truth, going back and forth, SLI doesnt make allot of difference for this game, and in some cases the single card was smoother.

Back on topic. There are places on the web, so I hear, to get new notebook cards. Unfortunately, the m7950 was sold out years ago, so finding one will be almost impossible unless you buy another m9750 (and that would be counter productive, maybe). A single ATI 3750 would be best for you, and maybe easier to find. Sorry i cant help more on that.

And I also cant get the camera working under Windows 7. I have no idea what the problem is though.

What is the use of the Ricoh R5C833 Media Reader driver? Is it the card reader? And is the driver useful for the m9750?

BTW: I wanted to change my system from Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate, but the upgrade failed... so I returned to Vista.

The media reader driver enables you to read SD cards directly on your laptop. On the m9750, it's on the left side in between the express card slot and the firewire port.

Even though I'm not a Vista basher, I think that Win 7 is WAY better. I'd also highly recommend a clean install rather than an upgrade for usually way better performance. What kind of error were you getting?

I took the upgrade root and am well impressed with the results. I use XP on my business laptop so I have been very familiar with the poor performance of Vista, but recently my m9750 was crashing all the time and was horribly slow. The Windows 7 upgrade was very easy to do and there was not a single glitch once it was up and running.

Speed of startup, shutdown and general operation is massively improved and my machine now works as it always should have. Cannot recommend Windows 7 enough if you are stuck with Vista, and I am very happy with the Upgrade root (which I took because I couldn't be arsed with the rebuilding required after a clean install.).

Hope this insight helps move more people back into the light!

    Clean.

    Hi bzowk,

thank you for your reply. The Windows 7 Upgrade stops when the updater starts to transfer settings, programs and datas (second step after installing the program files).

Anyone knows a solution for this problem?

Windows 7 question here. Can I install Windows 7 (Dual boot with XP) on one partition? Also, if I mount Win 7 with daemon tools, will it finish an install (eg. does the installation copy all files to disk before restarting so that I don't need to burn a DVD and can use only daemon tools?)

No Dan, sorry. Each Windows needs its own partition, and each install must be done (in 90% of cases) off a CD/DVD on BOOT. Also, I'm not sure how good Windows 7 is, but when I installed Vista, it took alot of work to boot back into XP.

Windows 7's bootloader allowed me to dual boot between windows xp and windows 7 fairly easily, however, if you have Windows 7 Professional or better, there is no reason to keep Windows XP around... I have Windows 7 Pro 64 bit on my M9750 and it works perfectly.

Hi guys, I've just had the chance to buy on ebay, regular invoice from the 2nd hand store, used, my first Alienware a M9750 :D
I was really happy, till I found that the good used price probably was a con... I've Vista, I've tried a thousand of 7950GTX drivers, but every single time I try to run a game or doing some video operations the video refresh goes out of range and the display (1440x900) start flickering !
I've installed for a trial XP and there evreything works simply fine.
Bios is 0B08, I don't have myhive account, they claim they don't have the account card and it wasn't included in the auction... can someone hand me the 0c03 for Vista ? I have to try to fix it, going mad !!!

Hi guys, thank you for answering ! :) Unfortunately still I can't get it to work, a little of research on the Internet is anyway showing me that the problem maybe the 7950GTX card itself... With XP installed everything works fine, on Vista after I loaded "every release of driver" I spent 3 days trying with everytime a fresh operating system by respawn, the refresh locks out of monitor sync. This is just my 2nd post, can't you point me at a link or something, please ? Thank you !

Ok Dream, I think I got you now.

Yes, you do need that new bios. Here is the Vista bios 0C03. Here is the XP bios 0F04. I recommend that you use the XP bios first. It is said to work fine in Vista.

Now, forget respawn. Just forget it. Find a clean version of windows to install. I'm currently running 7 and it is great.

Second, try running the new OS for a few days without installing a new driver. If it works, great. If not, then you might have hardware problems with your notebook. Then, when that works fine, go to this link. It will give you the latest driver (should be 179.48 BETA). Then try running without SLI and see if that works. Be very specific on how and when things go wrong. And it wouldnt hurt to know your monitor type.

Now, my question to you is, how much RAM is in your machine. If you have more than 2 gigabytes, then you might have problems between your RAM and the video cards. Give all details of your machine.

    Good luck!
ps. - to eightd: If you want to use these links for the first post, be my guest. :)
