to answer your first question, yes. i had basic soldering knowledge before this mod and it did help.

try reading thru the SLG pinmod general info post. (link in my sig) it has a lot of answers to commonly asked questions about the mod(s).

Mobile phone repairers could do the mod in 5 mins and charge not much $. Just dismantle the system till the PLL is accessible and bring in pics/doco on what you what needs to be done.

That's a large part of their job. Could also approach Digital camera repair shops. Both do repairs to boards based on SMT (Surface Mount Technology). The m11xR1's ICS/SLG PLL would be a huge by their standards.

Would someone here tell me how much they would charge for a SLG pinmod?

I'm pretty hesitant about replying to this but I'm pretty broke right now and $50~ bucks would help immensely. I'd be doing the 2GHz mod, and the hesitance comes from the fact that the mod requires decent RAM for stability and liability issues since I would not be able to replace any broken laptop that occurs during the shipping process. At least I own a pair of RAM that are proven to work under these conditions.

As far as soldering confidence for the mod goes, I found it easier to do than the circuit I was practicing on for a few days, so I pretty much nailed it doing mine within 10 minutes.

I'm also in Oregon coast, maybe if you're nearby you could swing by ;P
Didn't have a good camera, but you can kinda see my mod here.

I use only SMT resistors and coated wire so it will actually look decent ;) see the pic a few posts up...

I've seen your work, its very clean and nice.. what are the chances you could possibly mess up my board? :p I know it's impossible for you to guarantee your work though.. sigh. So the way you did it, you don't have to actually touch a pin? Did you cut a pin? Or did you just solder to that "thing" outside the PLL and ground it?

I also just realized I can just attempt to cut pin 14 instead of messing with solder.. I was able to cut a pin on my SLG without an issue.. maybe I can do the same on the ICS..

there is always the possibility that I fubar something. I find that as long as I don't cut any pins I do just fine.

the "thing" I soldered to was an empty resistor spot, I never touched the pin. But... that is the ICS PLL

The SLG pll requires soldering to the pin...

Mine is ICS.. Looking under a microscope now.. I see the empty resistor spot.. That looks pretty easy to get to.. but im still also scared I can't get a small enough dab of solder in the area; i'm afraid i'd get too much too much in there and bridge those resistors together... or even touch a pin on the PLL.

Okay I just went ahead and cut pin 14 on my ICS.. Now when I boot up in overclock mode, i'm showing 931mhz, 266mhz bus, 1064 fsb, multi set at 3.5.. that doesn't seem right?

Tax the CPU with something, just run prime95 or wprime and see if your CPU jumps up. It normally runs lower to conserve power when not needed.

Looks like I had some mild pin-bridging.. I cleaned up the area some more and now it's showing 6x multi at 1.6ghz.. I'm assuming this is correct?

so is it normal after this mod to not be able to restart correctly? because if I reset my pc from windows (soft reset) it wont boot of my hard drive, it looks for a network boot, so I have to hard reset it and cold boot unless it wont boot of my Hard drive, its not a big deal just sorta annoying, but I can deal with it.

I just got some at radioshack that was super thin.

I think its normally used for making small electric motors or somthing.

if you have an old pair of earbuds/headphones/etc they use a ultra fine gauge wire that has a non conductivity coating.

the soldering iron should get hot enough to melt this coating so you can tin the wires...

The wiring in your ipod headphones probably isn't solid core wiring, it's probably stranded so that they're flexible. I would say no to that and hit radioshack up for something solid. MUCH easier to solder

Welps, on my new ICS mobo with mixed and matched 4gb stick + 2gb stick i've hit a wall of 1911mhz at .9volt (stock). I think this is pretty satisfactory considering the crappy ram I have in this machine :)

Now I need to run 3dmark06..

I think he's referring to the wiring inside the headphones, not the lengthy cabling that goes between the headphones and 3.5mm jack. The wiring INSIDE the headphones are extremely thin.
