Sweet so for the 2.4 ghz SLG chipVIDis reccomended but the Overclock mode is a must.
btw Wascal now you sould use setPLL to change your current CPU speed by configuring to the ICS chip if you want 2.0 ghz you should set it to make the change. And be careful not to goo too high because going over 2.07ghz is a bit unstable without VID mod.

voltmod is piece of cake, just slice a pin on the voltage regulator, I've done it with some other modification and now I'm able to switch from 1Ghz-1.73Ghz to 2.0Ghz with just a flip of the switch and seting OC disabled to enabled [now if only I could find better ram to handle 1333mhz cl6 or having a bios mod to disable that cl6 block, going to 2166Mhz would be a flip of switch/ switch off, overclock disabled = 333*6.5]

There were a couple of us that attempted the 2.4ghz with the SLG and ours would NOT allow it. You should check this out and see if it helps http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m11x/611060-m11x-r1-333mhz-vis-bios-mod-14.html

Soo thanks on the link was very useful, I believe you with the effort you put into the mod. The only thing I stiull want to explore is the conditions that could help pin#2 to activate perhaps there is yet another way to get it to light. Perhaps different voltage idk.. going to do some research but can anyone help find some tough ram. mayby oc mode off is the trick.
-
sorry, but im 99% sure unless you find RAM that can run stable at Cas6 over 1000mhz your out of luck.
trust me there was a lot of work and trial and error on getting 2.4ghz to work. it just wont happen with out "super awesome ram". we even had a guy take his time to write/Edit a different Bios for us and we still couldnt get 2.4ghz due to the Bios limitations.
the RAM timmings is what really kills it. Laptop RAM just isnt made to go under that much stress. -
Hello people,
Well, after 4 days of reading this entire thread, I'm impress with so much knowledge.
I'm been thinking in overclock my laptop but I'm pretty sure that i have to do a pinmod (or hardmod, not sure) to make it.
The problem is I'm a Linux user and most of the programs you guys are using is for windows, besides i don't have exp in do this kind of mods.
Some days ago i found this thread where it says that its possible do a overclock without any kind of mods in Linux but I'm not sure about this...
@nando4, DavyGT, some_guy and other experts, can you confirm this info?
Overclock CPU in Linux
Thank you guys -

The way you'd do is by taking the m11xR1's ics9lprs387 LUT file from setPLL and merge it as a new PLL definition in the grub2 setfsb/lfsb code. Ref: setPLL, grub2-OC/lfsb.
However, your ICS PLL would need a TME-unlock PLL pinmod to do these. In which case I'd suggest trying the 266->333Mhz PLL pinmod so would not need to do any software overclocking. -
Well if its any help or game changer about that notorious 2.4ghz i found some monster ram Vengeance® ? 8GB High Performance Laptop Memory Upgrade Kit (CMSX8GX3M2A1866C10) - Laptop Memory Upgrades - Memory by Platform Its got 1866mhz but interestingly they gave it auto-overclock. So idk if this is of any use I think its certainly as good as it gets for a ram upgrade.
-
So only changing the MSR CPU register with c2ctl not enough like this thread is saying? This isn't true? -

Only way to get faster CPU performance that we know of (Intel could have some unlock feature somewhere that is confidential), is via a PLL pinmod. To go faster still would need to BGA unsolder the CPU and install a L9400/L9600/P9400/P9600 CPU. Hardly worth it given how inexpensive notebooks are these days and other alternatives like ultraportables+eGPUs that convincingly outperform even a m11xR3. -

.
just remember no matter what ram you try out. the M11x is still going to run it at the settings its set to. (depending on OC mode enabled/disabled, Pinmod, ect).
those XMP profiles and auto OCing stuff are made for "I" series CPUs and wont have any effect on the C2D in the M11x. the M11x will just treat it like any other RAM, trust me i tryed out some of the stupid expensive 1600mhz Kingston stuff a while back. i actually couldn't even get stable with both sticks on my 2.0ghz pinmod. let alone 2.4ghz even tho the Jdec table led me to believe it would have worked...
i know it all kinda boils down to bandwidth but using the low timings that the M11x sets really make the RAM unstable. -
Thanks a lot for the advice I'm probably going to give it all I got this weekend. I'll Make sure to take pics and inform you guys of new stuff I might try.
-
1866 cl10 or 1600 cl9 have the same chance to oc but 1600 cl9 are cheaper. I'm interested too but for now I can't make any investment, need to get pass my faculty license... just a silly paper to proove myself to the employer

I'm curious about temperature gains once finished with the CPU over clocking and pin mod from the factory 1.3ghz, how much noticeably different is it?
I run D3 for semi long sessions (hour to hour and half long) and it gets reasonably hot. Even using my NC-2000 cooling pad. -
Pinmod to 2.0Ghz and vid mod increase for stability; temperatures [when max load, doesn't reach 60 ~I've seen once 58 but most of time when gaming is a little over 50]
Using the integrated graphics and cpu at 2Ghz, having an ssd, my sistem is complety silent when music, web browsing and videos, only when compiling or watching hd video the vents start from time to time [using the discrete graphic the system's fan starts quite often, that's the reason I stay with the official old switchable drivers until there will be a way to choose integrated/discrete in bios]
PS: when siting on the desk with the laptop, I use these Mini Cool Ball Laptop Cooling Pad: [don't like active fan cooling pad because of the noise]

So after I cut the pin (i have the ICS) is it going to boot up to 2 Ghz or i need to do some other modding?
-
to answer you question, no. you have to mess with some software to get the ICS to OC the CPU.
it may be possible to just do the "pinmod" to get the ICS OCed @ 2.0Ghz but no one has ever reported doing it on here that i can recall. -
ok guy,i did it at 2.0ghz few month ago by just cutting the pin and im totally crazy loving my alien..but suddenly it floating and my TME enabled again made me almost hugging my alien and cry!!
today im just PASS BY this thread and make me wanna go back at 2.0 again...so is it possible that i doing a solder and will it unlock the TME again?
-
@ some guy
I joined this forum, after a friend mentioned the possibility of a m11x R1 mod to me over the weekend. I notice you have G. SKILL ram in your signature. I also have that brand in my m11x. It's specs are:
G.SKILL 8GB 2 X 4GB DDR3 1333 PC3 CL9 SO-DIMM Laptop Memory RAM 204 Pin
Do you think this would be acceptable for the SLG mod? I used SetFSB to check the chip and it says I have the SLG.
Edit: I read forum rules, start to finish, and couldn't find anything in them which would cause a mod (katalin_2003) to edit my post, and nothing which was not discussed and posted in this exact same thread multiple times already, so I am a bit confused. @ some guy if you get time please drop me an email to my forum name at hotmail regarding the pin mod. Thanks! -
reading the first posting from the op and what the heck is "i5 TS 166" Ive tried finding infor on the net and nothing
-
TS = Throttlestop
166 = 166mhz -
Ok I cut pin 14 and reassembled but Setfsb still says the pin is enabled. So that's it right? No pinmod for me?
-
I started my computer like 6 times, to see if I had it done and nearly gave up. The 7th time I opened my computer again I was starting to get pissed, so with some anger and careness for not damage the other pins, I finally manged to disable pin 14.
It very hard to see, but the pin goes nearly straight down from the "chip", so don't rush, be careful and you will get through it.
Can you make the VID pinmod with pin 14 cutted or do I has to solder it?
Can you make the system more stable at 2.0 Ghz with pin 14 mod?
I run with:
Core speed 2000 Mhz
Bus Speed 333.5 Mhz
DRam frequency 500 Mhz
FSB_DRam 2:3
Does this program work: Thaiphoon Burner Download - Softpedia for setting the Ram Timing? -
ah ok ill start trying to cut sideways toward the pin, thx for the help. BTW when i try using setpll i type in "Setpll m11x 270". sometimes this causes a complete freeze of my system so the power button doesnt even respond, the only option is to unplug the battery. is that a bad sign?
-
hey some guy - what wire did you use here http://forum.notebookreview.com/attachments/alienware-m11x/64719d1304211405-how-pinmod-further-overclock-m11x-r1-slg-hardmod-only-img_0092a.jpg to connect your pin 7? and where did you connect it? i know it needs to be connected on a 3.3v, but that's not a pin where you connected right?
-
That pic is actually done by the forum member ron g.
But i grabbed similar wire for a few bucks @ radio shack. The part its conected to is a easy place to get the voltage we need for the pinmod. Mine has been wired like this pic for a long time without issues -
what kind of wire is that? so is it safe for me to assume that it is ok not to use a 10kresistor any more and to just connect the wire from pin 7(without lifting it) to the said part of the motherboard?
-
not to sound like a jerk but please read the post i made for the SLG pinmod. the link is in my sig.
i spent a lot of time making it to help ppl new to pinmodding so ppl wouldnt have to ask the easy questions. over and over and over.
let us know how it works out -
sorry for the questions.
i got confused
-
Im not familiar with any "new" methods for the SLG pinmods.
-
EDIT: NVM got it to work, i wrote my own lut file.
i can reach only up to 2079 MHZ though, 8k 3dmark06.
5.5, 6.0, 6.6, 6.6, 7.4 WEI
I think my ram is limiting me.
Im using SETPLL, just used setfsb to check register values.
INFO : Ics user, did the 10k resistor mod.
Cant get setpll to work
1. Tried OC Mode, even 267 locks up right away
2. Tried no oc, speedstep enabled, lockups up instantly also
3. Tried no oc, speedstep disabled, same thing
Cant seem to further overclock, here is a screenshot of my pll dump anyway
Anything wrong with it? -
some guy,
first of all, fantastic work. much respect..
is there anyway to show a picture of the final result of the pin mod? The ones I have seen sofar are not clear to show the other side of the chip to see how and where you connected the resistor/wire.
I have the same chip as you.. and want to do this mod. but with so many pages.. is there a final perfected 'some guy' tuned situation you can summorize in a paragraph on what to do lol
I tried to do the ground pin 14 method.. with tedious results being stock again. Then read the soldering a wire then the resistor.. now im at the point to do this again and im confused as to exactly what to do with your final outcome.
Also, when I went to Radio Shack they have 2 10k resistors.. one being the size in your photos.. being a 1/4 watt.. other 10k resistor being twice the size at 1/2 watt. I take it its the smaller one.? and the order you place the resistor.. gold band on wich end ? facing what direction.. does it matter?
thus the clear screenshots.. i can copy your work and boom.. what next? ram.. what to buy ill buy it..you know what i mean?
Thanks so much again -
bump................

i know this thread is a mess but i have made a nifty link in my sig that points to a post i i spent a lot of time making that simplifies the mod for SLG owners.
please give it a look see.
thanks. -
Thanks!
So this picture:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...rclock-m11x-r1-slg-hardmod-only-img_0092a.jpg
Is the 2.0 mod. It looks like you added a small 10k resistor to a chip ( I'm guessing is 3.3v), then over to pin 7.
Correct?
But, it shows pin 3-4 are bridged. Accident?
There is another photo of (I'm thinking is more up to date?) a 6? Switch with your pin7 wire disappearing under the MoBo to the WWAN area. Nice idea!
What are the other two wires for? One from pin7, one back to pin7 (from switch) but the other two?
See, this is why I'm confused. Final product shows switch with a mod I don't see dicussion for
I want in !!
I read some and let's see if I'm correct...
Pin 7 cut,
Pin 7 add 3.3v via 10k resistor. ( Any 10k? Some are different like your fancy one)
Done ... Test.
If I want 400 instead of 333, I would also,
Pin 2 cut,
Pin 2 add 3.3v via 10k resistor ( like above).
Resulting in;
http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...-slg-hardmod-only-2011-01-29_12-05-53_335.jpg ??
Hence 2 extra wires in your switch in WWAN area photo?
So instead of cutting or modding, you have it ready for
Switching when you feal the need to tinker
Can I do the Bios 9.5v Bios MOD first before doing the 333 (cutting Pin 7 and adding 3.3c via 10k )?
Direction of 10k (band color) to pin 7? Does it matter?
I think this is what I'm looking for;
http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...-slg-hardmod-only-2011-01-24_17-56-48_917.jpg
Thanks soo much!! -
nothing else need soldered or cut.
its really all in the post. please read it... -
Thanks again! I'll let u know how it goes
-
So awesome man!
I got about 1k more on my score from a nice GPU overclock.
I used Evga overclock program. -
to get the 8k score
Thanks again.. soon ill give picts. -
To be honest i cant 100% remember. I don't own the laptop anymore. But the gpu clock was @ 630mhz

Hi everyone !
I'm completly new in the pinmod world and I may need some advices.
Here is what I've already done.
First of all I use the modded bios including some new features. I'm using setpll to increase the frequencies (with custom value with oc mod off because the values seem to only correspond to the oc mod on)
I tried :
- Oc Mod On
- Mem Off (so ratio 2:3)
I achieved 1900 mhz.
I tried with one stick of ram alone and with the other one but I can't push the frequencies any higher.
That makes me think, I'm cpu limited.
Then I tried :
- Oc Mod off to get higher voltage
- Mem Off (so ration 1:2)
I achieved 1800 mhz but the ram seems to hit a wall @ 565 Mhz (on cpuZ), strange thing, it seems that i can't push it straigh to 1800mhz, I have to get there step by step.
Then I tried
- Oc Mod off
- Mem On (so ration 3:5 in cpu Z)
I can't achieved more than 1600, and I can't understand why. The cpu is defenetly not hitting the wall and the ram is only @ 412Mhz. -
Im really dumb when it comes to these things... anyone think If i were to show this to a pc repair shop they would do the pin mod for me? Orrrrr.... anyone out in the los angeles area that wants to make a couple of bucks doing the mod?
-
PC "repair" is usually not board level work. This is in the hobby realm though so there might be folks willing to do... checked for electronic enthusiast in your area?
Keep in mind this mod does carry some risk. -
-
Not trying it but skim the thread for an impression of % success.

Not sure if this thread still gets any attention, but I am selling my M11x and therefore have a spare kit of DDR3-1333 Cas 6 capable HyperX ram. It is one of the very early batches and therefore does not suck like the later stuff did. I know this was a bottleneck for people doing pin mods so if anyone is interested shoot me a pm.
How to pinmod and further overclock the M11x R1 (SLG= Hardmod only)
