Hah, yeah I've seen some youtube footage of previous M11x's trying to deal with Arma2 and the results aren't pretty, I think they manage about 5fps with details set to high and about 12 with everything set to low.. A real slideshow!

I'm genuinely interested to see how the r3 stacks up though given that it's a significant development from the r2. (and more of an evolution than the r2 ever was over the first incarnation!)

Wow the latest Resident Evil (Picked it up on Steam Sale) is amazing! Everything set to max and even AAx4 and the game plays in the late 30's early 40's!! Looks very nice indeed! Its talking a little getting used to the controls though.. Bit clunky for my liking.

Download Quarl's texture pack for extra eye candy! Not sure if it'll bring the system to a standstill but the 1GB memory will certainly help. Having a SSD for fast streaming also helps on this game when running for long distances.

Nice to hear it runs well, also the controls are deliberately clunky to build up a sense of claustraphobia and tension. Bit of a strange way of doing it but can be frustratingly effective at times!

Just purchased Fear 3 and will be testing it on my R1. Will update once I've installed and played a bit!

    [EDIT]

It runs very well, actually. Average 29fps throughout the first mission on a mix of high and very high settings. Higher framerate when a few settings are dialed down.

I'm a little surprised. I have the stock OC (1.6ghz) on my Core2Duo SU7300 cpu, a slightly OC'ed GPU, 8 gigs of RAM, and besides that all I'm using in Gamebooster.

    Below are my settings:

    Resolution: 1280 x 720
    Vertical Sync: off
    Shadow Quality: high
    Texture Quality: very high
    Ambient Occlusion: very high
    Translucent Quality: high
    Anti Aliasing: off

As I have yet to finish the game, there may be parts where these settings won't be so great (i.e. the mech suit battles). If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask!

It should be ok but this game does not need a 2.4ghz CPU to play...though I am waiting for the point where the fps breaks down on the R2.

I bought James Bond Blood Stone on steam and will see how that fairs on the m11x when my internet quota resets.

EDIT: still playing fear 3 and made it past another mech battle in the 4 mission and it's still good :)

Ah good point! Yes I suppose it does work well.

I'm using an xbox 360 controller and keeping my mouse handy for some more accurate fast aiming when needed.

I had my first scare yesteray evening! :(

Installed GT Legends, at which it prompts a reboot to complete the installation. Windows starts booting up, but failed!

Fortunately it does this nice automatic repair and boots up, to which I promptly delete all the GT Legends files and run a system restore to an hour before.

I asked a few questions of my friend google and he pointed me in the right direction. Apparently Starforce DRM which comes with GT Legends messes up Windows 7 boot drivers! So yeah, useful to know, if anything else has it, or you install a game from 2007 that might have it...

yes, not a good thing. if there's a downloadable version on steam or D2D etc then they should not have the starforce drm.

I like how COD has an AR option so you can do faux 720p by adding 960x720 as a custom res as since the intel card fills the screen and the game knows the ratio conversions so you can get away with what is a faux 720p ie. anamorphic widescreen :)

Dungeon Siege III - runs wicked smooth but the best part is the game uses the Alienware Alien FX lights. As you take damage and get closer to death the light changes from green to yellow to red.

    anyone tried F1 2010?

EDIT: I tried an old game Dark Sector on the m11x....works great, BUT (there's always a 'but') the game has horrible vert- issues when you play the game in fullscreen - the aiming reticles are not round they are oval and the hud is cut off at the top of the screen. i have done a quick search and found that the only way to fix it is to set the game into window mode and manually enter in the resolution of choice.

Here's a vid of someone playing it on the M11x R2 i5 ... seems playable at about 30ish FPS.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nk-4kZ46M8U

I don't know what drivers he's using, or what... so I'm going to guess that you could probably play at 1366x768 on "medium" settings with a R2 i7... maybe more if you're overclocked.

Just picked up Homefront from the steam sale...no issues with frame rate, but the audio is horribly out of synch...I am on an R1, upgraded to 4 gigs of ram..anyone else have any success with the sound, it drives me crazy!

Edit - it seems only during in game cut scenes is the audio out of synch, and it sometimes just stops. In game sound effects, or when I talk to people, is fine

guys, is the r3 really a big boost in games compared to the r1? I'm planning selling my beloved r1 to get a r3, but need some positive or negative comments about the r3

    1. another thing is, is the r3 switchable graphics or uses optimus?
    2. how's the r3 managing the heat? I want a m14x too but I've heard the CPU raises to +90oC

    thanks in advance

Alice really lags on my R1. I tried it out on my dad's desktop which has the old but venerable setup of twin 8800 GS NVidia's. I ended up getting better performance with one card dedicated to PhysX.

My poor little m11x can't compete, unfortunately. I'd love to get one of those expensive Magma PCI to laptop card enclosures and somehow jury rig it to the m11x. Stick my old Ageia card on there, just to see if it does anything... :) Though I highly doubt that is possible- crazy idea there.

Hey guys... I installed the World of Warcraft free trial client on my Alienware M11x R2 thinking that I would be able to play for free...

only to discover that it won't let me log in with my battle.net account. I don't want to create another B.net account just to play WoW. Does anyone know a way around this?

I also found it funny that the WoW installer tried to dissuade me from installing it, saying that I "didn't meet the minimum system requirements"... hah.

Mass Effect 2 is only $5.00 on Direct2drive today. Hell of a deal!

Also, Frontlines Fuel of War only $5.00 on steam. (not a great game, but good deal)

There's no way to get around that, they made it so only NEW players gain access to the server, not people who are trying to get free game-time to their old accounts.

And if you're getting that from the WoW client, just whitelist it so that it's running on the Nvidia card.

    YouTube - ‪Fallout New Vegas on M11x r1‬‏

That is a video of an m11x r1 handling the game just fine in November of last year, the patches/drivers released for the 335m gpu and game have reportedly improved performance a little and I can only imagine the r2 and r3 iterations of the M11x running the game at better levels.

(A quick youtube search reveals far more)

New Vegas is not much of a resource hog. It runs without lag on my HP dm1z at medium settings and looks almost as good as everything maxed out on my Asus. I would not worry about it running on just about any alienware, and if you liked Fallout 3, you will like New Vegas.

New Vegas was ok, but still meh IMO. It sucked when compared to Fallout 3. It felt it was just missing something special. It had way too many glitches and issues when it was first released. Wasn't even made by the same developers (Bethesda Softworks) which sort of showed in the "lack of magic" that the Bethesda games have e.g. oblivion and fallout 3. Still worth playing though.

    hey Ghost,

do you mean uncap the .ini file is the file config inside my document folder ??

in my local forum, someone manage to reach until 180 FPS. I didn't think he use an m11x, maybe he use the desktop. but he says he edited the .ini file by disable the Vsync, not by change the number for max smoothed frame rate.

there's an option in the ini file that has the max fps set at 31. to "unlock" it you gotta punch in a higher fps.
