Yay, got it today. Not sure this is the right place to ask but you all seem like a helpful lot. Regarding AlienFX, how to I get it to morph through the whole color spectrum? Right now I can only select two colors eg. blue, green. It will fade from blue to green, then snap back to blue. Is there a setting to flow smoothly through all? Thanks.

@cjules, in the Command Center, go to Advanced options. You need to add "actions" to perform multiple morphs. Hope that helps.

Mine was $830 shipped. Then again you have the 500 gb hd and Gobi AT&T vs my 250gb hd and no WWAN.

Edit: BTW I was a cheap dude and ordered it with the 5 day delivery. The thing arrived in 2 days to me in Texas when it finally shipped.

So I want to put a ssd into the m11x i'm going to receive.
Should I do a fresh install / or clone?
I've been reading if I do a new install of Win7 it will automatically align the ssd?

I'm trying to figure some stuff out, I'll probably do a clean install of Win7 cause I have no idea how to align the ssd. It'd be great if someone with experience could give me AIM contact info or something to hold my hand for the first run through. Or point me in the right direction. There's just too much info that I'm trying to sort through.

So far, all the games I have tried have run great so no. For just simple web browsing, word processing, and watching HD content it hasn't broken a sweat.

No, not at all. Actually, I thought I would notice the processor's speed more, but for almost everything, the M11x is just as fast as my desktop. The biggest difference I've been able to quantify is loading times in games. Loads take about 3x as long on the M11x as they do on my desktop, but after the load is complete, the game plays just as smoothly.

I have Adobe Creative Suite 4 on here, but haven't used it much yet. I may start to see the processor lag there.

But no, I am actually very impressed with what this processor can do, regardless of its TDP.

Has anyone here gotten their EPP student discount on their own custom-configured M11x? I don't want to have to pay extra for the $1069 one on the EPP site... The sales rep I talked to wouldn't give me a 10% student discount on my $849 system. :(

not disappointed with the CPU at all. Don't think I've run into an issue with the CPU yet besides not being able to MAX out BFBC2 haha but it's playable and that was my main concern. The SSD helps hide any slowness with uber loads. Dragon Age Origins load times were shortened tremendously. Can't speak for ME2 though.

I don't think so, or I didn't notice it. Currently on hold with Alienware to add a screen to my on-site service call.

My white LED is also out in the same area as my red one. This is freaking ridiculous.

The issue is they are building systems too fast and despite what they tell you on the phone, they are probably barely testing them at all.

*heavy accent* "Sir I can see here that your system is being built with highest quality parts and then goes through high level testing to ensure it is perfect and Alienware has high demand Sir so the wait time is higher."

    Check your PM.
EDIT: I'd give you some coupon codes that will expire today and will drop the price of the EPP system to $940, but you don't have PM enabled. Also check this thread:

Let's talk squaretrade warranty for the m11X.

It seems to be that squaretrade has not vested interest in repairing this device. I would think that playing the odds they would want to pay out and hope that you buy another warranty when you get your replacement unit.

    What do you think?

Also there is a $50 deductible for accidental damage incidents, and the maximum payout on the warranty will never exceed what you paid for the warranty...hell one LCD will probably chew that up.

So is SquareTrade really a worthwhile investment?

man this thing is totally awesome.

One week in and i'm absolutely loving it. got a mobile 3g o2 USB stick on it.. and i've got internet everywhere. I use it throughout the day and come home with 30% battery still left, and I did tons of work sent out tons of emails all day.

Its so portable and fast (with SSD) i'm really so happy with it. Its light and perfect for reading stuff on the tube without taking a lot of space. easy to close and toss into your bag, it goes into suspend mode right away.

What a great device. I did my first skype video call while moving at 80mph on the train ;)

Edit: I forgot to mention, this thing rocks on beds too, the cooling is truly fantastic.

I don't think so.. the service manual says yo ucan remove it and when I opened up the M11x, it sits plugged in on top of the MB but I think it can be popped off. It's a super small card.

Yep, I did the same thing... mainly for the accidental damage... decided since this was on the go mostly was worth the extra... As I'm much more likely to damage this than a computer that stays in my house all the time.

I thought I would comment on the CPU of this machine.

It's fantastic. I've got about 9 tabs open in Firefox, downloading three games in Steam, and running Pidgin and there's absolutely no stutter. I've also got the keyboard to morph between blue and purple (which is awesome! :D). Speaking of the keyboard, I came from a MacBook keyboard and this thing is really nice. It's a tiny bit smaller than a MB but it only takes about five minutes to get used to it and then you're typing away.

I heard some people talking about keyboard warping: what does this mean?

There is no need to purchase extended warranties if you have AMEX. My Costco AMEX card extends any warranty by one year, and gives free accidental damage protection. Just order with AMEX and register the product when you get it, and you're good to go. Just make sure your card has the benefit first haha, almost all of them do.

@ceolwulf I read earlier that you said the protective screen made the screen appear oily and that you didn't recommend the anti-glare viewguard.

Do you personally think that the monitor's stock glare is bearable in a lighted environment such as a classroom? Thanks!

3 year advanced warranty from Dell is 268. That's 3 years with ADD. The SquateTrade warranty is more like insurance.

They decide if they will repair or pay out. In my opinion, they have no real vested interest in repairing. BTW...they say they do all the repairs in house and nothing would go back to dell. If its AD you pay $50 more for each AD claim. When the cost of service provided to you equals the cost of the m11x, your warranty is over.

So it seems to me that the Dell warranty is the better choice. I am really looking for arguments the other way.

    Thanks.

I think the decrease in quality isn't worth the added benefit of blocking glare. Yes it does block glare but a) it doesn't block all glare, it only dampens it and b) on white/lighter colored parts of the screen, you can see some form of texture from the screen protector so it looks bad.

I haven't used it in a classroom (I will on Monday, though) but I don't think the benefit is worth the loss of screen quality.
