Because repairing is done next business day and you can make sure that your laptop works perfectly before they leave. When they replace my screen and motherboard, I will have a perfect M11x. If I were to return it and reorder it, I would have to take the chance that it would come assembled correctly.

There have been a lot of posts regarding the screen. Some like it, a lot think it's inferior. What is the best way to adjust it for optimum picture, similar to what you might do with a new HDTV?

For the backgrounds / avatars.. go here..

    http://support.dell.com/support/top...3B236B92DC5A4186E040A68F5B287CA1&journalid=#3

Midway down the page there's an "Alienware Wallpaper" download link - click that to retrieve the installer. It states it's for the M17X (i.e. "Alienware M17X Custom Package") but it works for the M11x (and I'm assuming the M15X as well)...

Once downloaded - run the installer as administrator - it'll install the avatars in the appropriate directory so that you can simply "Change your picture" via your own selection - as well as put all the backgrounds in the C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper directory. I personally select all the images and create/move them to a new "Alienware" directory.

At that point - you can create your own theme via personalization. Simply select all the backgrounds in the Alienware folder you've created. Set the color to "Frost" if you want it like it was shipped.. :)

For the logon screen.. go here:

    http://tweaks.com/software/tweakslogon/

and download the utility ... run the utility - and, again, if you want the same as shipped - select the "AW-CO100.jpg" image from the folder you've downloaded the backgrounds to (C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper or C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper\Alienware in my case) within the tweakslogon utility and have it apply. It'll prompt to re-size - Answer "yes" - and voila, you're done. :)

I was wondering what is the battery connector like and is it easy to swap out the battery ?

Can a higher capacity battery be swaped out with the one that comes with the laptop?

    +rep jsgiv thanks

kssr - I don't know about using a 3rd party battery. this battery fits in there quite nicely, like it's made for it.. there's just one connector for the battery though to answer your question. Like a mini plug seen from the PSU to power DVd drives in desktops etc.

Don't think this has anything to do with the m11x..
Contact Steam or your credit card company.

So I decided to do a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate (mine came with Home Premium). For those of you thinking of going this way, just delete every partition on the disk. There's no reason to keep the 15GB recovery and the 30-40MB OEM partition is useless from what I've seen.

Every driver on Dell's site for the M11x is correct (except for one... I think the intel 5100 doesn't want to install). You should have no problems doing a fresh install on another harddrive or your stock.

hey guys...sorry if this sounds like a really stupid question or if its been mentioned before...

how are you guys installing fresh copies of win7? did you guys make isos of existing installation disks or does alienware provide you a way to reinstall win7 freshly?

i remember someone talking about using a flash drive to boot up...but initially you'd have to have the win7 installation iso first, right? i guess i'm just curious if you guys already have your own copies of win7 to install or if you somehow were able to use whatever dell provides to you to get a fresh install.

    (i'm a cpu n00b....sry :p)

    @hawkeye http://kmwoley.com/blog/?p=345

Ignore the edit part at the beginning, it wouldn't work for me. I followed his instructions below the edit and it worked perfectly with my Windows 7 Ultimate ISO.

You should be able to... find... a Windows 7 ISO somewhere on the internet. I would try looking around here for information about using the ISOs.

??? It grabs the info from weather stations via the internet. So you have to be online for it to work and update, which is every hour I think.

Yep - I've done the install twice now for my SSD. All the drivers are available - with the exception of the Cyberlink YouCam software - which is available via https://smartsource.dell.com (registration required).

    @Rhodan/azn - thanks! - glad to contribute! :D

By default, the settings in the profile throttle the system down on battery. You just have to change the profile to keep it at max and there ya go.

You just press the battery icon there to see for a couple of secs what your battery juice is at. I didn't even know about that feature till the other day. It literally blew my mind when I hit that thing when my M11x was off and it showed me what the battery life was.

@ceo you can have them ship you a brand new machine and use the old one while you wait.

and OT my aurora arrived yesterday. i open it up and its completely covered in dust inside and out. the chipset fan is noisy as heck and the SSD is the older firmware. back she goes.

I just got mine yesterday, and like it very much, but I have one issue (which someone will probably explain is my fault, and I admit that possibility!)

I got Steam squared away and briefly tried Half Life 2 and then Portal - just with the keyboard and touchpad (not seriously to game, just to test) and using the touchpad worked fine, and then it wouldn't be responsive for a bit, and then it would seem like it would jump and catch up to my last input and work okay for a short time and then it would not be responsive.

Even when I tried to make an effort to apply good pressure (thinking that maybe I was too light) or turning up the mouse sensitivity, that didn't make the issue go away.

    Am I missing something??

Ok so I got my M11X yesterday!!! I love it and it has no issues... I have a 500GB drive from my ASUS G1S that I put in an enclosure and I was playing with the Norton Ghost and Acronis yesterday to clone the M11X hard drive to that one and then put the 500GB back into the M11... the only thing is that none of those clone programs went through for me... can someone point me in the right direction as to what I have to do?

Norton just went through the entire process... it took 31 mins but then it gave me an error message that stated that it could not complete the clone!!! I actually put the Source drive as the C:\ from the M11X and the Destination drive E:\ (the 500GB drive in the enclosure), then hit proceed. It then stated that it would erase all contents and I confirmed that but it never completed the clone. I then tried Acronis True Image and that told me that it had to reboot and then I got scared because after it did it went to some recovery screen and asked me if I wanted to recover from hard disk or fix windows.... IS THIS NORMAL? Can someone shed some light on this for me?

I was on this for 4 hours or more yesterday. Any advice on this would be appreciated guys!!

I tried it with my iPhone SIM but it didn't work. I'm going to try it with a friend's AT&T data SIM later. Did yours work at all?
I felt like reinstalling what I needed and knowing exactly what's installed. It also makes me feel better starting with a very fresh install. :p
Eh it's alright, the little defects don't hurt the usability. It was more of a pain to try and explain exactly what was going on with it... I had to have the tech take control of my M11x and then navigate to a photo of it. XD But I'm really happy with my purchase knowing that they'll come out and I can watch the guy replace everything.
