Well one of my buddies here at work said that I am trying to clone to a different size drive and that will not work... I thought I read in previous post that someone else had done that and it worked for them. Anyway, that SDHC boot disk I created just has to work then. I haven't tried that yet.

I'm thinking about buying the M11x sleeve from Dell. Problem is shipping is $10... if I get another $20 of product I get free shipping, thus I can get a $20 product for $10 basically. So any suggestions on another Dell product that's ~$20? Possibly useful toward an M11x =)

Don't think so. When I press Fn + F2, it just "enables" it. It never says "disabled." THis needs to be fixed.

Yeah, I did eventually. I'll post it in the optimization thread later today. **edit - I posted it a few minutes ago.**

I got mine in yesterday, 2 weeks and a day after ordering. I wanted to say I'm very impressed. The build quality is fantastic, and I have no complaints. Here's my observations:

    1) Yes, SD cards do stick out about 50% of their length. In order to avoid this, I bought the tiniest MicroSD reader I've seen, one you shove a MicroSD card into the USB end, and the back-side only sticks out as far as a Logitech Nano Mouse receiver. Not a perfect solution, but now my new Class 6 8GB MicroSD card is there for ReadyBoost, and my personal files.

    2) Finding a 12" laptop bag in a retail store is hell. 13.3" bags are pretty common, but the M11x just swims inside one of those, and all the 10" gear is far too tight. Fry's had exactly one bag that worked, and for $30, I grabbed it until I can find something better.

    3) I grabbed a Razer Orochi mouse (notebook-sized bluetooth gaming mouse) and I just LOVE it. I found a thin, small mouse pad that doubles as a protector between screen and keyboard when the M11x is closed, and it is a delight to use here at the Chipotle where I'm posting. (The touchpad is very nice, but my hand cramps of I use one for long.) Just FYI, the Orochi works just peachy on the stainless steel tables here... but the pad is a nice touch.

    4) For anyone who cares, Second Life (notorious CPU hog and Nvidia-loving virtual world) runs beautifully on the M11x. The Emerald client (and presumably the official one too) did complain about the computer being under-spec'd when starting, but you can click past that, and once in the game, I was pulling 50 FPS in an empty sim with settings on Ultra (no AA/AF).

    5) WoW runs between 20 and 100 FPS depending where I've been and what I've been up to.

    6) Almost, almost sprung for a Torqx SSD, but I've heard the 64GB performance isn't as good as the 128GB, and the 128 was just a bit beyond my price range. If anyone else tries one of these, could you fill me in on your results?

    7) Video playback, so far, as been the only bad thing I've found. Watching a Twilight Zone episode (FAR from HD) at CBS.com resulted in many stutters. This is in Google Chrome running whichever version of Flash Chrome automatically downloaded. YMMV. I have not yet thrown my anime collection at it... I'm scared, as some of it is very HD.

Thanks everyone for keeping me company while waiting. The IRC channel is still there, for all you owners and soon to be owners. I check in about once a day. I hope everyone receives theirs soon. ^_^

 @Caskey - man you're on a streak dude... that's tough luck... Why don't you send it back for another brand new one? They've tampered with that one long enough. Mine came without a single defect on it whatsoever. I have a perfect screen and good higes so I know they have good build quality... who knows.

That is not true, they are doing it right now. If you are within the 21 days, tell them you will return it instead, so if they'd like to keep your money, suggest again that they cross ship a new unit.

/\ yeah what he said... basically you still have time to send it back. I don't know why you have messed with this this long dude. You don't deserve to jump through that many hoops. You paid for a new system and it sounds like they already have put so many new parts in it that it's starting to fall apart. Call Dell and talk to a manager.

hey just want to check to see if this would work fine in my M11x. DDR3 pc8500 ram at 1066 will work? PC8500 ram

reason I ask is my bro is gonna upgrade his unibody macbook to 4gb ddr3. I figure I could give him my 4gb ram and I'll get this faster ram since he was gonna spend the money anyway and I could use the faster ram over him =)

You mean 8GB RAM? You aren't gaining anything by upgrading to 1333 MHZ memory if that's what you are suggesting, due to the chipset limitation.

The best solvent is a diluted alcohol. I'd only use acetone at my workplace if I'm cleaning up some difficult, non-water soluble substance. (I work in a laboratory). Besides acetone is a main ingredient in paint thinner, and we all know what paint thinner does...

@tears - nope it's still just 4gb ram, I just want to make sure that gskill one will work in my M11x. I'm pretty sure it does. Supposedly it's a little faster than what we have so whatever. doesn't matter though since my bro needed 4gb ram anyway I'll give him my m11x ram and I'll take the gskill ram.

    http://www.guru3d.com/article/accelerate-x264-1080p-movies-over-the-gpu-guide/

cpu usage is now only like 10-20% when playing 1080p videos...so awesome! i have yet to hook up my laptop to my tv though...will try it out this weekend

haven't done any fps benchmarks yet, but basically starcraft 2 is extremely playable on high/ultra settings. ~30fps

the only minor niggle IMHO is that since the cpu is a bottleneck, and the pathing for units eats up a lot of cpu, with extremely huge battles it can slow down a bit. I'm talking about running around with 255 zerglings/banelings, something you barely ever encounter in sc2 especially multiplayer.

after switching the graphics to low it did speed up somewhat but again running around with crazy amounts of zerglings like I test out from time to time it can slow down. Barely below 20fps if that, I'd say lowest ever could have been 15fps but what else do you expect with these CPUs?

    I have an su4100 btw.

Just got my M11X today. I have to say that I'm totally impressed.
    The build quality is great.
It runs smooth and very quietly. The fan has only turned on once or twice in the last hour and a half. Even when the fan turns on, its not loud at all
Now I'm off to install some games!

The heatsink you have it on is the GPU cause it has the silver-ish plate for the ram.

Anytime a chip is connected to a heat dissipating metal it should have some sort of effect. In the M11x it should help a bit since those tiny holes the ram gets for "breathing" are not really helping during intense gaming. Now watercooling ram...that's a gimmick and a waste of money.

Ram heatspreaders work but who knows if it will work a little or alot.

The issue here that I am thinking about is even though the ram itself should run cooler, the heat is only being transfered to the heatspreader and should therefore still be trapped in the little ram compartment area.

But that's ok in a gaming situation when the ram runs hot. The fan is always on and drawing air out of the system right? When idle my ram is pretty cool to be honest. Well also I cheated because I'm using a cooler lol.

    @ Rambler,

I understand people like to do high OC's on ram, but standard heat spreaders are good enough. Water cooled spreaders actually restrict water flow a lot unless it runs on its own system (which costs more than it's worth). Also no one would ever increase the voltage enough to warrant water cooling ram, it just shortens the life of the module a lot compared to CPU's that have rated safe voltage levels. It's all a matter of opinion I guess. It's good to see a fellow water cooler here. Here's my rig http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v324/SSPuffer/AngledShot.jpg

Mind linking yours? It's always nice to see other people's water towers.

Quick question to those who have recieved their systems. Is there a reason dell included two "Alienware microsoft Windows 7 64BIT" discs? They are identical and the only differance is that the numbering in the back ends in Y on one of them and Z on the other. On the tape that seals the envelops shut. Just wondering if everyone else recieved two discs. Not like it buys me anything, but I suppose now I have a spare.

I only got one disc, but I should have a new m11x coming because of some keyboard/screen build problems with my current one. This other m11x will be a later build and may have the same thing, mine didn't even come with a resource cd! Just one single windows cd. Will let you know in a couple weeks though.

How do you like it? :)

I really like it, the screen is perfectly clear, no hinge creak or anything like that. Threw a piece of tape over my service tag as it was easily wiped away. I ran a nail over a corner of a letter. Might run to my room and get a thumbdrive to do some benches. It's going to take some getting used to the keyboad. Naver had a laptop below 15 inches, and that was 4 years ago. Everything else since has been 17in laptop. Going to run some games on it tonight as well.

Looks like I got an extra windows disc. Somone probably had fat fingers when grabbing discs.
