he said that only applies for old systems see the link, he provided me with he said the policy is same as the other dell laptops it says 6 dead or 1 bright:

the exact words he said from email:

    Dear Mr. Hanslot,

All Alienware systems have the same dead pixel policy as the XPS system. This is not specified on the website and might be misleading.

Please follow the link below for the Dead pixel policy.

    ahanslot,

Phone them up, ask to speak to a manager. Demand to speak to a manager. Make it clear you want to return the system, or have this screen replaced.

Then take down the managers name, and inform him you'll write to Dell and Trading Standards.

Hi guys, I just received my m11x today (UK based). SU7300, 2gb RAM, 500gb HDD and Win 7 Pro. Have 4gb ready to upgrade myself.

Having played with it for all of 10 minutes, I love it... 1 problem though, the right front palm rest appears to be slightly loose. I can pry it open with my nail and when you press down on it there is obvious movement.

Anyone else got this issue? I don't mind if it's a design issue, but would obviously prefer to get it sorted if not.

    Thanks in advance!

That's the first time I have heard that issue. Usually people with problems have the dreaded warped screen or the the annoying squeeky right hinge (which is the one I have on mine).

Definately give Dell a call and have them send over a technician to fix that if you aren't confident enough to fix it yourself with the Service manuals that are public online.

the palmrest is tightened down by screws. If you really wanted you could open it up and see if a screw is loose. It does require you to remove the back panel, front top panel, keyboard and then finally palmrest. It's easier than it sounds though..

    2 quick questions:

    1. What is the fastest speed memory that this supports?
    2. Any big benefit going to 6GB (with mixed sticks) or 8GB?

The fastest I believe is 1066 and there really is no benefit going from 4gb to 6gb to 8gb; the M11x probably won't be utilizing beyond 4gb anyway. Also I would advise you not mix sticks, that only brings about trouble later on. Full kits are your best bet.

@dallow- fastest speed would be 1066MHz and there is really no benefit for increasing the RAM above 4GB... the bottleneck I think would be the CPU at that point and I doubt that more RAM would help. You can run most multitasking projects with 4GB Ram anyway. I would suggest an SSD Drive upgrade instead if you have the cash...

I've been looking for one on ebay. There are gobi cards but not sure if they are the same card as the Dell Gobi card. I'd love to try one as I the 5530 drivers are a tad flakey.

So I tried the mini antenna that I posted about that I got from ebay and it works until you put the base back on.

So I unhooked the AUX antenna from the wifi card and plugged it into the main connection of the 5530 and it works beautifully.

Downside is I can't get wireless-N but I get an excellent Wireless-G signal which is more than enough for browsing the web (i don't really game online). I'm going to get a regular wire type antenna and try and route it in the base so I can either get decent WWAn signal or restore the Wireless-N aux antenna.

    Neil.

just got mine, and pretty confused about switching between the 2 graphics card options.
When I press Function /F6, the screen momentarily goes black, then for the briefest time, sometimes so fast I cant see it, it shows whether you are going for the high or low settings.

What I am confused about is sometimes an icon appears in the bottom right hand tray, I believe this is when you are in the highest settings, but most of time it doesnt, I can press Function / F6 10 times, and only very occasionally does it show the icon.

Do I have a duff machine? Is there a way to tell if you are in high or low graphics option easily

    Thanks

get 1333 or 1600 ram, if only solely for an overclock. I'd even suggest just getting one stick of 2gb until you find out how far your cpu can overclock, then bump it to 4gb if you want after you confirm.

The backlight under my tilde key is off. When I set it to white, it glows redish. I wanted to be sure it wasn't just the setting, so I tried different colors and something similar happens.

    This happen to anyone?

Yeah, this is apparently common with all of their backlit KBs, even on the expensive models, they are not very uniform especially at white settings.

I guess it is a side effect of the multicolor. Would be neat if they had an option for a single color backlit KB.

did anyone find out why the screen dims after 5 mins of inactive use or so, but doesn't go back to full brightness after some activity.
The power settings have the 'Dim display' set to Never.

Any help appreciated as it is pretty annoying having to ramp up the brightness if I dont keep using it.

Dont mean to sound negative, overall a stunning little laptop, have had it for a few hours now, and love it.

    Thanks for the info guys!

Have you tried this yourself Eggs?
So when overclocking RAM, always better to get a faster speed memory? I'm assuming it natrually defaults to the lowest usuable speed of the mobo.

The ram will default to the highest supported speed yes which is 1066. If you were to OC the ram, then a faster speed will be better since it will technically be a bit more stable at said higher OCed speeds, but I'm unsure if the M11x even supports that. I'm looking to pick up the HyperX 1600 just for future use though. It'll run at 1066 but I can upgrade a laptop later with it. It's about the same price.

That's what I was wondering as well. I understood that there's a BIOS option to OC the CPU, but I believe the 800MHz FSB speed is limiting the RAM.

Just make sure you select ram with the same voltage. The HyperX http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104160 runs at 1.5v and have 7-7-7-20 timings and the stock Dell ram is at 1.5v. Not sure about Dell's timing though.

    @Rambler
Yes this is the conclusion I came to as well.

Honestly though, it's best just to go with what the manufacture suggested lol...1066mhz

The timings on that page are slightly misleading. The 7-7-7-20 timings refers to the timings at 1333MHz. At 1066MHz, it's likely to be less (5-5-5-15). At 1600MHz, it's likely to be more (9-9-9-27). The stock RAM timings in the M11x is 7-7-7-20 at 1066MHz, so the above RAM should run at slightly lower timings than stock. Although don't expect much of a performance difference, faster timings are only known to improve performance by 2-3%.

If somehow, we manage to overclock the bus higher than 266MHz (i.e. 1066MHz rated) then the stock RAM will not be suitable. That's basic RAM which is not designed for overclocking. It's max rated speed is 1066MHz. If you overclock the FSB higher than 1066MHz, then the RAM will pretty much fry itself. It might take a mild OC, but I wouldn't risk it.

In standard mode (i.e. 800MHz) the RAM downclocks itself to 800MHz. I have bought the 1600MHz HyperX RAM (the RAM you linked villosa) for my M11x as it will downclock itself to 800/1066MHz if necessary (with slightly better timings) and if I manage to OC this thing higher than 1066MHz, the RAM will be suitable. As you also said villosa, it's for future use also. If I get rid of the M11x, I'll remove the RAM and use it in my new machine.

So you agree that ram I linked to is pretty good for the M11x then if we somehow OC the CPU to a higher speed in the future?

I've put together a good shopping list on Newegg lol. Hitachi 500gb HDD upgrade, 4GB 1600 HyperX ram, and FF XIII Xbox 360 for the wife.

Yes, it's the best RAM I could find anyway. Sorry, I should have mentioned that in my post! The RAM you linked is the exact RAM I bought for my M11x. Also, I saw a previous poster concerned about the diameter of the heat spreaders on the HyperX modules. There's no need to worry about them, they fit perfectly.
