E-Sling case, Razer Orichi, Kensington lock, and a 750gb external bus powered drive (Seagate)... over $200 that I wish I could have financed through Dell. :)

That's strange. My Orochi works very well. Are you sure your bluetooth works at all?

Get rid of it immediately. Download Microsoft Security Essentials.

mcafee is not bad..and doesnt hog much resources. Should have used it for 30 days ;)
I heard MSSE goes nuts after a while and starts using CPU a lot.. but it happened only to few guys
and i dont trust avg :D once i downloaded maya from their official site and showed it as some potential unwanted prog or something like that :p

    AVG is too bloated now.
Avira is where it's at. Free updates as well.

Only con is a splash screen now and then asking to upgrade, that can easily be stopped.

MSSE worked fine on my 2140 with 2gb ram and a stupid weak Atom for about half year. No hitches at all. :D

No one uses Avast? It has been my go-to for all my machines for like 5+ years now. They just recently revamped it so it is even better.

I'm using Avast on my main PC, but was planning on using MSSE for the M11x. Kind of don't like the Avast popup dialogs telling you that a new database was installed.

That is actually something they fixed in the new version. They added a "Gaming Mode" that you can turn on forever, it hides all the pop ups and annoying "Virus Database Updated" voice. You should check it out. Also, you have to download it from the site, you can't update your old version to the new revamped one.

i need some help with my m11x. ive pluged it into my external display, a 22" - native resolution 1680 x 1050, but the laptop does not allow me to select that res. ive got it on 1440 x 900 atm and it allows 1600 x 900 & 1600 x 1200 but no 1680 x 1050.

can anybody advise me on how to get the laptop to output to the 22" at native resolution. thanks

It's presence became too great.....and it probably had something to do with being enormous. I love mine to death though. I must confess that I dropped it once, 3 feet to the floor on his back. After a restart though everything was peachy.

Needless to say, I'm looking forward to having nearly the same amount of power in an 11inch form. I should have it tomorrow. :D

On a trim enabled ocz ssd, do I need to run wiper or does it really maintain itself when I leave it on the log-in screen?

My understanding is - as long as you have the standard MS drivers installed/configured, as long as you logoff and leave the computer idle overnight every once in awhile, the TRIM process should execute.... wiper shouldn't be needed.

So, mine just arrived a couple of hours ago. All I've done so far is change it over to English, get rid of pre-installed virus scan crap and install chrome/flash.

My very first initial impressions are:
-The right hinge is clicking...sigh. I can press lightly on the plastic to recreate the noise. If this is the worst of the flaws everyone has reported, I can live with it unless it's a sign of bigger problems in the future...

    - Keyboard & mousepad buttons.... is just awful so far. I hope it's partly just getting used to a new one but it's definitely inferior to my MSI Wind's keyboard. Some of the keys have a 'slant' to them at their natural resting position and typing is a little cumbersome - also I'd gotten used to a shallow but notable bevel on the Wind's keys, this has a less tactile sensation to it. It just feels and sounds cheap to me - if this is the cost of backlighting, I'd live without it. I can see the keyboard becoming problematic after a lot of use if it wears down quickly.

    - Glossy screen, of course, is awful too but I knew that going in.

(oh and changing to Windows 7 from only ever using XP is ... confusing :) )

Sorry to hear about your problems Nephand, You might consider calling in.

I feel like, size aside, this is one of the more superior keyboards I've used on a laptop, and my lid hinge's motion is very smooth and fluid.

Overall it sounds like your build quality is sub-standard for this system, I would call.

Apologies if this has already been resolved but I couldn't find it when searching...

I am trying to pair my iphone with the M11x with bluetooth tethering.

I have spoken to 02, and they have applied tethering to my account, and I can now turn it on with the general settings within the iphone (The option isn't there unless they have enabled it).
I then downloaded the newest version of itunes, and connected via the usb lead, and I now have 3g :)

However, I would really like to be able to connect via bluetooth, so I did the following -
    1. Iphone tethering is enabled on iphone
    2. bluetooth is enabled on iphone and says 'Now discoverable'
    3. On the M11x, select the start button and type 'Bluetooth' in the search pane, then select 'Add a bluetooth device'
    4. At this point the M11x says 'Searching for devices', and the iphone is also searching, but they never find each other?

Any ideas why they can't find each other, I have also tried searching for my USB Microsoft mouse, and it can't find that either?

    Thanks

I've never seen the point of WEI showing an overall score determined by the lowest subscore. Surely an average value is a more accurate measure of overall computer performance? I know WEI is never recommended as a good indication of system performance anyway, but they could at least make it a little more indicative!

Hey guys, got some general questions about the m11x!

Should be really easy to answer -

Is it possible to turn all the lighting off if you wanted for a bit?

How easy is it to change the colour of the keyboard/other bits - is it done through the one app?

Also, are all the goodies and wallpapers etc installed when you first get the m11x?

    Thanks!

Edit - Also, do you get a mouse mat thrown in?

Does anyone know if the graphics state (either integrated or discrete/Nvidia) remains after a power off or reboot? Or does the M11x revert to integrated graphics when a reset occurs?

@ Rambler, Yes it remains as set.

@M11xhopeful, Yes you can turn the illumination off. Just hit FN+F11 I believe. Don't have it around me.

To change the colors hit FN+F10 and you can go into the Command Center and change the colors. Simple and really self explanitory. All the Alienware wallpapers that are on the site are preinstalled. No mousepad or hat thrown in, although it does come with the cloth alienware sleeve that the bigger brothers come with.

Not to mention that early reports of heat issues, some sources say ssd doesn't support TRIM, plus the ssd is proprietary. Also, the nicer, full HD screen isn't available in NA except in the $4600 "signature" series..

Regardless, the 1600x900 default screen is still much better than this one. As well, the SSD has been confirmed to support trim, just not in Raid as all SSD's right now [damn intel]. I haven't heard any heat issues yet...

If you're not looking to game then the Z might be to your liking. At 1600x900 and the 330m, you probably won't be running med/high on most games. And if the new Z is anything like the old Z, the tiny cooling system won't even support any kind of GPU overclocking.

the Z: from the early taiwan users: proprietary SSD, no trim for raid, crapy sound card (with constant bzs noises), battery less staminal than stated: <4 hr (or even <1hr fully loaded), and finally the game: street fighter 4 benched B while under 1024x768 (the i7 version). not mention it's twice the price...

Where can I Download all the Alienware backgrounds? I'm doing a fresh install to an SSD and want to get all the old themes back. Also, where do I change the Windows log in screen? Being a new install it's the lame windows picture. I want a differant pic, maybe an Alienware one like I used to have. Avatars? When do I get those too? I figure some of you guys have done this already, I never saw the need so I'm just curious

Is it just me or does the LED effect make the laptop slightly warmer?

How do you change the log-in screen? You know, the wallpaper for the "pick your user" screen.
