Does someone know why my CPU is doing the following:

The usage is constantly going up and down between 10 and 30% with quite alot peaks of about 60% and sometimes even 100%! Is this normal? If you need additional info I'll post it

Check the process name doing this (open task manager /right click on the taskbar to open it/). Then you will know which process is doing this, eventually to kill it (but you take the risk) :)

Hi guys at last my M11x has arrived very pleased with it. ran it on battery straight out of the box, followed the optimization thread to maximise standard performance. used internet explorer played some video, installed Half life 2, it played beautifully in native res, high settings. (will post benchmarks later) installed Medieval 2 total war. played well. in native res high settings. performed a system update.Downloaded 3DMark06 Did all this on battery out of the box (90%)just over 4hr 20min Swapping between Graphics cards.
    Have not overclocked CPU yet.
I am very pleased with it will post results on the benchmark thread later.
Anyone considering buying one of these should do so even in standard config like mine.
    Nick:>

Glad to hear your stock build has you pleased. I'm often surprised how few SU4100s we read about when the difference is so minimal. I added only RAM and bluetooth and expect to be pleased as well.

There's an option in the BIOS that will do that for you. :D

You might also install an updated Nvidia driver. They don't switch, but they will give a bit more performance. Might as well if the switching isn't something you'll be using.

Hi! I've been haunting these forums for a while and they've been a big help in my deciding to purchase the m11x! Now that it's here, I decided to join and possibly help if I can. I got it today, it's perfect. No screen gap, no squeaky hinge, no dead pixels. That optimization thread was a big help with my fresh install. Thanks all!

Maybe you need to strap it down to prevent the kicking. Let us know if you need any links to straps, etc - it's a common issue with this laptop.

Got my m11x at Best Buy 2 days ago. Love it! Coming from a Dell Mini 9 and wanted to keep the portable and battery life, but wanted some butt kicking graphics too. The price at BB (899) wasn't bad for the configuration. C2D, 250GB 7200rpm and 4GB RAM are the upgrades over the base model on dell. On Dell it would be 999 so $100 difference. Not bad. Overclocked the CPU and the battery life on IGP is insane. One thing though, is there any indication when closed that it is sleeping or done charging?

I got mine today and i must say i love it. I told myself i wasn't gonna be too picky. Everything was perfect untill i went to a site that had a white screen and there are 2 small black dots. Im not sure if they are dead pixels or dust.
When i put the cursor over them you can still see them over the cursor.
Im not sure if im gonna call them out on this or just let it be. How can i tell if its a dead pixel or dust?

Dust typically has a white shine from the backlight. Those sound like dead pixels Motorsport. Can you zoom in on the dots with a magnifying glass or digicam? It should be easy to confirm what they are with that approach.

All - I have had my m11x now since about 11:00am today. Due to shipping my memory was loose but after fixing that it works great. Here is my official review...

    a. This thing is amazing.. My wife already had one so I knew what to expect.
    b. First thing I did was remove 5400 rpm drive and install SSD Corsair 60gb with 250ms read and 110 write (approx).
    c. boot time is so fast I dont even know what to say. It boots into windows much faster than my m17 with 7200 rpm 160gb drive.
    d. SSD does make a difference. Plain and simple. Boot times, game load times, transitions in games from one screen to another or areas.
    e. of course cpu is the limitation here. Performance is way above average for a laptop this size.
    f. I LIKE THE SCREEN... others complain about glare and maybe if I sat outside it would be different...
    g. installing games from usb cd rom is BLEH! I think it is slow. So.. when you can, figure out a different way to install.
    h. sound is acceptable for a small laptop. Not going to blow you away like the m17 but hey, it's less than half the price!
    i. settings are challenging sometimes.. meaning you have a synoptics pad but it is difficult to tell when the native driver settings are applied or the alienware "alientouch" is applied. Same thing with the power settings. If it was up to me I would say ONE OR THE OTHER....

in closing I am rambling here... I give it a 9.5 outta 10. I would have given it a ten but... for that we need an I3 2.1ghz.

    Best Wishes,

    StevenX

Got my first Alienware laptop (m11x) today. Tried setting it up disabling facial recognition which got my CPU usage to 7 - 9% then overclocked it through the BIOS disabling battery charging. So far so good. No BSOD after more than an hour of running. Very satisfied ... for now. :)

It's a new system delivered defective. They might not WANT to replace the screen, but you can ensure that happens. Lots of tips here. If you have difficulties getting them to cover it, search [email protected] and team blackhawk on this forum (two resources). Several users here have prioritized their calls through them, but do try the standard approach before going to the top.

I would insist on the screen being replaced. You didn't pay for a refurb or second.

I thought it was a fast build. It stayed in production for 1 day. Im betting it was already built and was returned. If they offer to replace it i will be happy with that. Just hope the tech knows what he is doing.

Well, Finally got mine a day ago, Loving the thing so far! had to do a little advanced work to get the alienware customized windows 7 on the 80GB ssd (note: Dell datasafe backup will not let you use the USB restore on a drive smaller then it came from, lol dell). Had to use acronis and a hard drive dock but got it going, (also wiped the useless diag and recovery partitions and took over the whole SSD for windows).

I love how you can even do basic stuff in WoW on the Intel IGP, Not exactly good for grinding or anything, but works great to quickly check auctions and such (I can deal with 10FPS for that :p)

Is there any news on this getting an i3 or an i5 processor update? That's what's really killing me on deciding which laptop to get right now.

For anyone waiting for their Dell/AW Neoprene Sleeve to arrive you will have to keep waiting. I got my second order delay notice today and now estimated ship date is 5/24. This is ridiculous. It is a shame that Dell has everyone place essentially a preorder for an item that doesn't exist yet.

I guess I will still wait because I would like to have a slip case that protects the unit while it's in my laptop bookbag.

I just received the laptop yesterday and so far I'm about to declare it the best laptop I've ever owned.
It is simply amazing. I am able to throw any recent games and it takes it in strides.
Here comes my question...after a several hours of gaming/testing I can already notice some wear on the keyboard and touchpad. The spot on the spacebar where my thumb is in contact with is especially visible.
I had a shower just before the session so my hands were definitely without any grease...is anyone else seeing any wear on the keyboard this early??

How much more severe will this get after a few months or even a year? I shudder to imagine.

What kind of wear? Grease spots won't get you anywhere with Dell since it's normal and three isn't really paint on the keys to wear off. Unless you have acid body secretions... That's a different story lol.

The Dell site states that Dell may ship parts of an order at different times. It might be a good idea to request they ship your machine ASAP and the sleeve when it comes into stock. Otherwise, it's looking like your order won't arrive before the M11x is retooled to include a ULV i9.

You can request your order be expidited as little as three hours after your confirmation email. If your payment method is confirmed, this will speed up delivery.

Confirmation periods change depending on the payment terms. I used Dell finance for the 12 months interest free and had a 24 hour delay because of it.

I have grease spots, but I don't really care. It's going to get used and it's all part of the process. Doesn't bother me. I use it a fair amount. Got them on the touchpad and space bar. Oh well, nothing lasts forever.

Got mine up and running this evening as well, very very happy with it. I overclocked it once I had it set up for internet etc and it runs sweet as a nut. Just been playing Halo with all the settings maxed out and the fan rarely comes on.
Itunes and my music this weekend along with another game two as well as a read through the optimisation thread but for now I am off to bed a very happy chap.
