For some reason I am unable to open to open the optimization thread. I was wondering of the updates available on the Dell site which should I get (Bios, Nvidia driver etc)? I am happy with M11X r1 so I dont know if I should be updating or not?

    Cheers

Hi everyone, I have a quick question about World of Warcraft Preinstall Edition on m11x i7. I selected World of Warcraft Preinstall Edition when building this machine, but now I kind of regret it because 1- I think it will take longer for them to build the machine and ship it. 2- I dont know how do they install the game Is it done by person or is it done by default, I dont really understand how is it installed. i am always kind of super careful & gentle with my machines so I really dont want anybody touching my machine before me. Do you think anybody can help me with this question? Thank you for your time and understanding guys. Sorry for the repost. Thanks.

Considering the machine has to be completely built to install it, I doubt it slows it down. I believe it's one image they install which would mean it doesn't slow it down, but either way your laptop is built and thus touched by a person. Actually, there will be a bunch of people touching your machine before you, and that would be the case even if you didn't put WoW on it.

You can watch a video of how it's done to see in fact a bunch of people will touch it no matter what YouTube - DELL FactoryTour

Being a laptop is irrelevant. In 2001, 3Dmark2001 ran great on my 64MB GeForce 3, but not on a 16MB card with more limited memory bandwidth. I believe I was running it on my GeForce2 GTS-V when I noticed that the flashed of light while zooming into the Earth were disguising pauses when it wouold load higher detail textures. I noticed this because it would pause longer and then stutter a bit on older, less capable video hardware. Basically, when a more complex render target comes into view, the data must be transferred over the system bus and then it is at themercy or the video card's memory capacity and bandwidth after that (GPU power would remain constant and not cause the fluctuation once it's all loaded and stabilized).

It's pretty easy to visualize. Game consoles do it too. Play Cruisin' USA on the N64 and note what happens in San Francisco when you enter a tunnel vs. before/after. I like how Metroid Prime disguised area loading by making the doors to another area take a second or two longer to open if needed (level data was streamed like graphic data; no loading screens). Of course, many games stream but the LOD suffers due to the view distance in an open-world streaming game, like The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker, Grand Theft Auto III and up, Shadow of the Colossus (which I suspect you are familiar with due to your user image being from it's spiritual predecessor, ICO), etc.

The one I played with in the store had multiple options. Its weird that it would be in the program that way, though. You sure you're in the right spot in the program?

    EDIT:

Do you mean one color at a time? If so, I don't remember being limited to that, but I can't quite recall if it was the keyboard I changed that for.

Ordered the R1 m11x and it should arrive tomorrow according to the tracking. I don't have time for Dell to build another one. If it is out of spec, to loud, keyboard touching the screen, bad hinges, etc and I simply return it for a full 100% refund?

School starts July 8th for me so I'll have to order an Acer timeline or something with less issues. I hope mine is ok. After reading about all the issues here and seeing the fan noise, I am beginning to wonder if this laptop is not what I need for a quiet setting in class.

Quick Question! If I want to upgrade my cpu

    1- Is It Possible?
2- What is the fastest & latest cpu that i can put in this m11x R2?

I am asking this because i think in some laptops you cant upgrade the cpu?
Thank you all for your answers.

    Well,

    A) You are posting a question about the r2 in the r1 thread, and
    B) the r1 cpu is soldered, so not possible there.

The fastest and latest is the one that dell offers. Yes the CPU is soldered, it's not upgradable (at least not in the normal way).

The normal way of upgradeing a soldered in cpu is wait one year. Then you will buy the replacement for a higer price that will also have the cpu soldered on the motherboard. :p

0.02 cent sockets will give you a reason to cheaply upgade your cpu we can't have any of that money saving attitude :D

What kind of performance hit should I expect by using this theme and software? I kind of like the Alienware theme but it's already boring. Does the theme rotate or does the background image rotate?

I just received my M11XR2 today.

    Couple of issues...

    - When I press FN + F6 to switch between graphics cards, nothing happens. as in there is no on-screen prompt that tells me the switch was successful. Anyone know what the problem is?

    - How do I tell which Graphics device is currently in use?

Edit: I just realized I posted this in the R1 thread by mistake, my bad.

Did you read the documentation that came with your MX11R2. If I remember correctly it's automated. It switches automatically when it needs more power . The documentation should explain how Nvidia Optimus works I would assume.

I don't think I would like it if my laptop automatically switches and I don't know what graphics card it is using. I really like the fact that when I want to switch my graphics card, I can switch it on the fly using the FN/F6 combo.

^^^x3. i never have liked the idea of a laptop that switches itself. For now, i still think the R1 is more better... lol

Edit: i got an Invisible Defender in today! I did a pretty bad job putting it on even thought i tried really hard. :p it does look good though, so maybe it'll save the Cosmic black! (what for idk) :D ..i'll try and get pictures when i find my camera.

About my R1, as the Postal Dude says, "I regret nothing!" :) Still love using it. It's just so darn portable. I purposely run up and down the stairs in my house for the sake of taking it short distances. (Just kidding.)

    LOL! :)

I just did a battery drain test on mine (Gee, it's only taken me 3.5 months to perform one :D ) and I find it amazing at how long it lasts on a charge. The ex said she wished I'd last as long. :(

I totally agree. I took my R1 on a trip to Minnesota this month and was able to use it almost all afternoon for some easy web browsing at the Holiday Inn before charging it. Then again, I'm still using the same watch battery in my Sega CD since 1994.

just wanted to let all who use GameBooster to cut unused backround apps that they have a new 1.5 version and I beleive from my 2 days usein that there is an improvement, also to note with this prog when you launch it and you have a logitech or maybe even any type of gaming pad/mouse you may need to uncheck the human interface device checkmark on the front first page when you launch it cause it might make your mouse useless, so hope this helps guys. :)

So I've had my R1 for a or so month now. My hinges are fine, everything works, it overclocks fine and I have no driver issues. Put me down as satisfied.

I'm having trouble finding a way to get rid of FailSafe constantly trying to install, but once I purge the bloatware, I'll be golden.

BTW: I just ordered that screen protector that Dell sells from Amazon for cheaper.

    p.s. kinda glad I didn't get an R2...
