The physical mounting is just the beginning of it.

There are major architecture changes, too. There is a new motherboard chipset. The Core i5/i7 CPU's are Lynnfield CPUs, which mean that the Intel Integrated GMA graphics are on the CPU itself, instead of as a separate chip on the motherboard. There are different memory speeds. The thermals of the processor have changed from 10W to 18W of heat dissipation, which means that the power and cooling are different as well. T

he M11x R2 also does not have a VGA port, and the output ports that it does have are in different locations. That means that your current R1 laptop chassis wouldn't work with an R2 CPU/motherboard.

From an architecture perspective, the M11x R1 and M11x R2 are two totally different computers. The only way to "upgrade" from one to another is to completely swap out the chassis, motherboard, and CPU. That would be a pain to do, totally void your warranty, and cost well over $1000. You might as well just buy a new laptop.

Just got my M11X yesterday and wanted to comment on the heat. Just by surfing the web I had the laptop on my lap and it gets hot. Not to the point where it would burn you, but it is a little warm for my taste. This is my first Alienware and really like it. I got it with the i7 640 CPU, 4GB ram, 320GB HD and everything else it has to offer.

The computer looks well built. The laptop is actually heavy than it looks, but I'm assume it is sturdy to cool down the components. Overall I am very please with its performance, i haven't had a chance to install any games on it, but I did install audio editing software and it works great. I am going to use it for DJing and gaming mostly. For anyone on the fence, I have to say it is worth every penny.

You're in the wrong thread; this is for R1 owners, while you have an R2. Don't worry, I'm sure you're not the first.

P.S. Check the advanced power settings to make sure your Minimum Processor State is lower than 100% so that the CPU will scale down (and thereby drop in temperature) when the full speed isn't needed. Doing this made mine drop about 10 degrees Celsius on average. If you game, it might be better to change it on the Balanced plan and leave the High Performance plan alone to switch to while gaming, only because sometimes I've found Windows won't scales down the CPU too often causing temporary FPS drops. It doesn't feel any different doing stuff that doesn't use most of the CPU all of the time (i.e., with regular use), but for gaming it's noticeable, to me anyway.

    Yeah, that's a good one. :D

I've got a Bose sound system hooked up to my HDTV, which in turn my M11X is connected to that by HDMI and the sound is killer. I've watched BluRays from the ASUS external BluRay drive- The sound and video are amazing for a little machine. :)

    Hi

I've done quite a lot of reading on these forums which resulted in my purchase of an M11x R2 I5 4gb.

Felt I needed to post this (1st post) to see if there is something wrong with my M11x.

I updated the GPU driver to 257.30 driver from Dells website to solve an issue I had with optimus. I then downloaded and ran 3dmark 06 expecting to see over 6000 (I haven't overclocked anything). I got 4334! which is clearly rubbish and nowhere near what people are getting on here or even the lowest scores from reviews of the M11x R1 su4100.

I'm concerned that there is a problem. Any ideas or help appreciated.

    Thx

    Si

Ok - I ran the above benchmark on Battery.
Tried again on mains power and got 6666 on 3dmark 06. Thats more like what I expected.

Can someone explain this to me.

I thought one of the selling points of the M11x is that it didn't throttle down it's performance on battery power. I bought this wanting no change in performance on battery so I could play games on my lap without wires.

    Whats going on?

    Hey all,
I have an R1 and am having issues with getting both headphone jacks working simulatanously. I plug one in and it works, but the second won't. Every time, the first one plugged in works, but the second won't. So both ports DO work, but can't seem to work at the same time.

Anyone have the same issue? Any ideas?

@joncolbert - No clicking noises here. That doesn't sound good no pun intended.

The only issue I noticed is that the F8 menu that the manual talks about regarding recovery does not work. I haven't touched the partition or anything else for that matter so I am at a loss as to why it isn't working.

Can anyone confirm that hitting F8 during start up accesses the recovery menu?

I haven't OC'd yet but I tried a couple of games for extended play times and all seems very stable.

I'm not sure whether your purchased directly from AW or retail store, but I would suggest getting another new one.

I agree...I feel your pain and it sucks. If it means anything, it took 3 times to get the "right" one. The first one had fingerprints and scratches on it right out of the box and the second one had a misaligned screen.

    Third one is a charm.

    Don't give up...get another one.

it really isn't worth your time though, unless you already have a primary computer you can use in the mean time.

you do pay for the product to go through "inspection" and "quality assurance" don't you?

Called Alienware today and got a new hard drive. The tech did not seem to know the M11X was advertised as overclockable, he kept saying that such function was not supported and asked me to check about that...

I also messaged erawneila and ChrisM, both of them said no replacement for non-OCalbe machines

One thing I did like was their CS, I found them pretty genuine to help and easy to talk to.

    What do you guys think?

seems to me even if they won't official exchange it due to not being able to OC it, if you're within 21 days from the purchase date, you can always return it and buy it again. It'll be more hassle, but if you're not happy with it as is, there's little sense in keeping it.

I don't think ALL machines will have problems with hinges. Maybe it will be just a number of them. The problem is to know how big is this number, especially because it is a relatively new product with less than one year since released. One can say that a forum like here is a biased sample, but I have been reading the threads and I have seen an increasing number of reports (even from people initially very happy with their product when the first reports were coming).
