I'd also lower the res down to 1280x720. It will look the same as it is also 16:9 ratio like 1366x768.

    @ceolwulf
I was only pointing out that they were probably boasting about its gameplay and looks, and not how well it runs. I think everyone knows by now BC2 runs like a 1 legged hurdler.

My wife just got hers today and the system is very neat. I couldn't believe how tiny this AW is. I have owned 2 M17x's and 1 M15x so I was pretty shocked. lol

Anyway, the only issue I have with it is the screen, which is pretty subpar. Colors are washed out, it isn't very bright, and viewing angles are bad.

I guess you can't argue too much at this price point though.

This is one of example of the happy people very rarely posting and the people with "loud fans" posting much more often. Happy people rarely communicate how happy they are... how many posts have you seen like this? Not many... but most of us are using the heck out of this thing.

You can't look for what's coming down the pipe in six months. In six month, there will be an even better technology just six months away. This is why most of us don't buy $3,000 laptops.

Also, pinetrail is a complete disappointment and ION2 isn't going to touch the 335.

Why clone when you can start from scratch?

Make a USB key bootable, make an image of the recovery disk, and copy the image onto the USB key. You whould be able to reinstall through the USB key if you don't have an external DVD-ROM.

Yes, HDMI works well. Sounds and video transfer over very well.

No one has tried it, yet. I'm anxiously await the results, too. I just emptied my reserves on this laptop, external hard drive, bose quietcomfort 15s, and the razer bluetooth mouse.

That is correct. Canadians will have to call in to add Bluetooth to their orders. You cannot add it online and it is not included with the M11x.

im surprised to see people not able to play BC2 , I posted this on the benchamark site.

Battlefield Bad Company 2 is very playable at high settings 1366x768 all high 1x AA and 1x Anisotrophic .

Mine is the Su7300 Core 2 duo oops. not over clocked, on battery. I am playing it now, but I have read other people not being able to play it at all, so who know.

She is enjoying it, but I am not sure she is sold.

She has been playing L4D2 on my desktop (4870 and U2410). Everything maxed on an H-IPS WUXGA monitor is going to spoil you ;)

We'll see if she wants to keep it. I told her not to worry because with Dell it's like a risk-free trial :D

Thats the first non-praising review of the screen I've seen.

How does it compare to other netbooks/ultra-portable laptops?

I just can't get enough of the BIG finger print issue :p

yep I'd like to complain as well. After bowel movements I always get poopy stains on my keyboard. Why can't Dell make matte poopy colored notebooks :D

Stop being so lazy and wash your greasy hands and if you like to play with your face then wash that as well.

    Enjoy your clean M11x :)

can anybody tell me how to set the AlienSense ? i couldnt be botherred to set it up the first time i switched it on and now i can seem to see how set it up to read ur face. looking in the command center place and cant see ... please help !

EDIT: ok ignor that. just learnt that it learns ur face after logging on 5 times.

had my m11x a gd 5 days now and i must say its amazing. play the new stalker game on good settings which i was very impressed at. only one thing is annoying and thats the fan. it has no consistency to it. and the screen is not quite as good as i was hoping. its not a bad screen but my little sony 9" P series is brighter and more colourful.

NOW you guys start telling me the screen is subpar. 0.8 cd/m2 black levels and 200:1 contrast ratio with bad viewing angles and people rave about it. /Boggle.

That sucks, I would call and complain if you really need it, but you may be able to just install one for roughly the same cost, and easily less hassle.

Where did you find the rating?

Also, contrast ratio means near-nothing. you can take a 500,000:1 HDTV and put it in a room with a lit candle, and the light from that candle would effectively diminish the ratio down to under 1000:1. It's such an absurdly subjective number.

Viewing angle doesn't matter either now days like it used to. All screens are going to have a wide enough angle to where the primary user will be able to see everything just fine. The screen isn't big enough to worry about other people's view lol. All that matters to me is how rich the colors are, nice sharp picture, and that it doesn't ghost/blur during action.

    http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=de&tl=en&u=http://www.notebookcheck.com/Test-Alienware-M11x-Subnotebook.25888.0.html

The measurement of contrast ratio are in a room with no light source using an meter that measures luminosity. It is simply the difference of the luminosity of the screen between a black background and a white one.

It's a benchmark, and the m11x screen is average at best based on these simple light measurements. These measurements are done under the "best" conditions, ie: no extraneous light sources to make things worse.

The numbers for screen black levels/contrast/luminosity posted on notebookcheck.com are not subjective. They are measurements - no different than measuring a distance with a ruler.

That being said, screens themselves ARE subjective despite posted measurments because everyone's eyes are different, lighting conditions are different, and people expectations are different. I'm happy most of you are happy with the display, but this screen on paper seems like nothing to brag about. I get mine tomorrow, and i'll judge for myself then, but i am terribly picky when it comes to lcd screens.
(i type this from an old CCFL panel with near perfect black levels and viewing angles)

I returned my m11x today as I thought the display was very subpar. I have been using a Sony Vaio Z and a new Macbook Pro. The m11x just didn't cut it for me. I have been spoiled by using better hardware and there's a huge difference.

Sony or Macbook have a laptop with 11" screen and up to 8 hour battery life without compromising gaming performance? You are missing the point of m11x, which is a truly universal notebook.

I'll probably be in the same boat as you Professor. I probably would have paid up to $200 if a high quality screen upgrade was available. Maybe more. Let's face it, if you plan to spend upteen hours staring at a screen, why not have the best? Why not at least have an option for a better quality screen?

The m11x is such a perfect niche notebook. It will be a huge success because i've come to believe that most people don't care if the screen sucks. Most people don't even know the difference. Since LED backlit became the norm screen quality in terms of black levels and color quality have suffered a lot on average.

For me, there's likely a sony Z or a macbook pro refresh in my future.

I guess I need a very good screen now as I'm 40 yrs. old. Maybe all those crummy laptops over the years contributed to ruining my eyes. Just a friendly warning to every one. I liked the m11x otherwise.

I am 42 myself - I also have one of the New MacBooks as well as my M11x and a HP TM2 - I also use numerous different latops at work.

From what I can see the screen on the M11x is actually pretty decent in comparison to the range of machines I use - the brightness levels are on a par with the MacBook and they are actually better than the HP.

The colors on the M11x are decent, expecially once calibrated, and I can see little difference between the Mac and the M11x - especially when watching itunes content and the like. For day to day use, gaming and video watching I have no complaints.

When I have time (at the weekend most likely as work is pretty busy) I will see if I can take some pics or a video showing the screens in comparison.

do you mean the one on the lid, or the power button? i can't confirm this quite yet, but i'm pretty sure the on on the lid is lit by the screen... power button probably does pulsate, though. seems like that was in the manual?

the light from alien head is from the backlight so no, if it's in sleep, then the head will not be lit.

Searching for HDMI in this instance would have been a start. It's the same for me as far as reading the same stuff over and over. Don't get me wrong I am grateful for the knowledge sharing but we're still getting asked differences between the two cpu's. There's a whole book on it in the 4 threads but people can't be arsed searching.Even though I'm new I'm aware of the basic forum etiquette.

There seems to be an underlying trend here in that people are complaining of inadequacies in what can only be described as a revolution in laptops for the money. I spent the last 6 months researching a new one and was hoping to find something that could possibly play HL2 and similar games at a reasonable speed. I thought it nigh on impossible that I could be running Bioshock 2 on anything but my desktop. 6 months later we have this behemoth dishing out more than 200fps on arguably one of the best games ever, hdmi, masses of disk space, ssd etc..

Come on fellas accept this for what it is, it's just an awesome bit of kit and yeah maybe the sony vaio z has spoilt you but it's a fraction of the price.
