So in this specific case the pc freezes and I have to restart in safe mode and use DDU and thus retry, no BSOD

    edit

I just tried again by installing the drivers only, no physx and hd audio and indeed I have a blue screen with the smiley "no happy"
    I will try other section.
The inf of blazeghost indicates section 44 I will try another ... :(

I'm wondering if there isn't a problem with the SG or PEG which can be activated with Fn F7 or BIOS Modded.
And moreover my battery does not work any more so it is constantly on sector and suddenly it does not pose a problem whatsoever ....
thank you for your help anyway, i appreciate a lot

Hi, yes, it can be done for other gpu models, its a very easy process, give it a try. Read the older posts in this thread, I explain it step by step, and if in the end, you cant get it done, post your hardware info, and I´ll do it for you.
    Good luck.-

    Hello,

I have been updating my drivers as per your instructions for a while now. However, the most recent drivers when edited for me keep black screening my laptop. I manage to get it back up and running after a cmos reset and gpu removal. Am i doing something wrong with new driver?

    Look forward to a response.

Sorry for the late reply, I´m going to need more info on what you´re doing. Are you modding the driver for another GPU? Another laptop model? If that is the case, which one?
Also in the latest driver nvidia posted, there is a new section for the latest windows compilation, your GPU may need an extra line modification if it´s listed in this new section.
Just post a hardware info screen and I´ll see where it lands on this new driver update.-

    Hello,

Apologies for not giving much info and no worries.

My laptop model is an Alienware 17 with an i7 4710mq which originally had a GTX 880M (not sure of actual model name). I had a GTX 970m which worked with driver 461.40. I just recently bought a GTX 980m which again works with 461.40.

Neither work with the most recent drivers and the laptop black screens during installation.

    Hardware info is as follows:

    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_05AE1028&REV_A1
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_05AE1028
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&CC_030000
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&CC_0300

Just let me know if there is anything else you need.

    Thanks,

    Luke

Ok, I see you currently have the 980m installed, when modding the new driver, you´ll see that, there are now two sets of lines describing gpu/laptpop model combinations.
If you are still using windows 10, then the modded line should be in the second set.

In this second set locate the group that has the 13D7 gpu (5 or 6 lines of code) and you´ll see that there are 3 sections options (37 - 38 - 39). Change just 1 line to match your hardware info.

    %NVIDIA_DEV.13D7.05AE.1028% = Section038, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_05AE1028

In your case, I´ll try first section 38, but if you experience black screens, changing that section to 37 or 39 will be the second thing i would try.

Also don´t forget to change the line at the bottom too.

    NVIDIA_DEV.13D7.05AE.1028 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M"

    Good luck

    Hi,

Do I have to edit the driver's as normal as you have shown on page 6 and 7 with the added addition of what you are explaining in your reply? Sorry it is a massive hassle when the laptop black screens so just want to go in with all the information.

    Thanks,

    Luke

The proccess to mod an .inf file, has changed a tiny bit since the appear of windows 11.
As I explained you before, these latest drivers, have now to sets of intructions, one for windows 10 and another for windows 11 users.

The first step is to place the modded line in the correct set.

In your case, if you first locate the 5 or 6 lines of code that correspond to the 980m (13D7 group) you´ll be for sure in the windows 10 set.

Over there, just change the first line of code that has the 13D7 identifier with your laptop hardware info. It should look just as the line I wrote in my previous post.
After that change the other line at the end of the file, it should also end up looking exactly as I wrote it in my previous post.

You only need to change 2 lines in the .inf file, leave the rest as is.

If you have any other doubts before trying it, just ask. NP

    Good luck.-

    Hello,

Just gave it a go using section 37 and 39 and both resulted in black screen and then having to turn on and off the laptop manually multiple times before Windows launches again.

    Bit more info for you.

When in safe mode the driver installs fine, however, I cannot get back into regular windows at all.

Tried remove anti-virus with no luck there either.

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks,

    Luke

Ok, try this .inf file and see if it works or not. Also, I would try NVCleanstall first, to make sure there are no garbage files messing with your install.

Check this video to see how NVCleanstall works:

Lastly, there´s no need to install these drivers in Safe Mode, you only need to turn off driver signature enforcement:

    1. Press and hold the Shift key on your keyboard and click the Restart button.
    2. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings and click the Restart button.
    3. When your computer restarts you’ll see a list of options. Press F7 on your keyboard to select Disable driver signature enforcement.
    4. Your computer will now restart and you’ll be able to install unsigned drivers.

    Hi,

I will give it a go.

Sorry I meant to say that as a last resort I tried to install them in safe mode to see if that worked and it did but then I couldn't do anything else.

I have been trying to install following your instructions plus what I had learnt from you on page 6/7 with the driver signature.

As far as I am aware I should be doing everything correctly but still a black screen and failed install.

I will try nvcleaninstall and then use your inf file and see what happens.

Thanks so far for all the help and fingers crossed it works.

    Hi,

Unfortunately, still getting a black screen.

    The steps I took were:

Unzipped the most recent driver into a folder

Replaced the original inf file with the one you provided for me

Used ddu to remove all previous drivers

Restarted and held shift - disabled driver signature

Used nvcleanstall to install only the recommended on that software.

Starts installing, accepted the warning about driver signature

It gets halfway through and then the sound for a display disconnecting occurs. After this it remains black and completely off.

Restart multiple times until I get to recovery and then into safe mode where I can then roll back whatever has happened.

What could the next steps be?

Again thanks for all the help.

Again, sorry for the late reply, I´ve been flooded with work.
If you made a clean install and it is still not working, then you could try a dirty one.
Install the latest working driver on your laptop, I recall you said 461.40 and after that install 496.76 selecting the quick install option on the driver setup file. Don´t use NVCleanstall or DDU.
Give it a try, sometimes a working base is needed when installing unsupported combinations of laptops and gpus.-
