    Heat is going crazy, but it's easy to control with some dice :D
    Too bad that there are power issues, I wonder how well it'd work in a different system.

    Somone with an 18x and some big cojones ought to do this and see just what kinda score the can push :D

    @Svl7, What kinda PSU are you using? I'd love to see the 920XM at 1.4v and the GPU benched at the same time. Is your throttling PSU related? Or possbily bios induced?

    EDIT; quick question, would the 920XM be better at 1.4v than the 540M? I'm guessing it may since the multiplier can be increased. I think with the 540M, I was lacking pll voltage to keep the CPU (504M) stable. I had the CPU running at 179MHz on the FSB.

    Thanks guys!! The mod itself isn't that difficult to do / remove, only need a solder iron and a steady hand, figuring it out takes more time.

    I'm using the 240W PSU, but it doesn't have an effect on the GPU voltage supply... it seems the GPU gets limited by the mobo.
    Funny thing is, the CPU doesn't get limited by the mobo... my most hardcore CPU overclocks/overvolts would've been impossible with the stock 150W PSU, it immediately tripped at a multi of about 28x.
    With the 240W PSU I can run the CPU at about 1.4V and a multi of 31x on all cores, no power issue at all, at least not regarding the CPU... when I overvolt and overclock the CPU I can't get my GPU to work properly anymore, it automatically clocks down.

    It seems as if the CPU can leech voltage from the GPU voltage supply, but not vice versa. My guess is that since the mobo was never designed for such high currents and power draws it has some flaws at these levels.

    So to sum it up, the CPU can be overclocked like crazy with a voltmod and a 240W PSU, but there's nothing I can do about the GPU.

    The 920xm shows its full potential when overvolted, 31x on all cores... crazy. When I used SetFSB I had a lot crashes though, lowering the multi a bit helped, but I guess my RAM isn't stable enough at 1.5V and when I set it to 1.6V in the BIOS I get into an infinite boot loop and have to reset the CMOS to get it working again... you might have more luck, you've already done a great job with SetFSB and the BIOS overvolt.

    My 8GB DDR3 could run at 1.6v, perhaps we can do a swap? I'd love to see it would help.

    Yea, I'm going to maybe give the 920XM and 940XM another shot at it. Now, for the 920XM, VID5->VSS would give me what? It gave me around 1.4v for the 540M. Plus I could probably do 1.5v with the 150mV from the bios. Or maybe not. But if should run pretty well, especially since I won't do much FSB overclocking on the FSB. The multi should just require voltage from the CPU itself and not the PLL. Definately need some dice, but I wonder if it would be stable. Only way to know is to try right? Though to do the testing and benching will take hours. I'll have to make some time. I have so much other benching to do as well :p May have to swap my stock ram in or my GSkill, as I'm not sure the Hyper X will handle it. Though maybe my RAM was the limiting factor on the 540M? To many variables, not enough time to test :p

    Thanks, really appreciated, but I somehow think it's the board... once I was able to boot it at 1.6V (luck?) with my HyperX modules, and the system run stable for hours. Then I shut it down and the next time I turned on the system the boot loop issue reappeared... I really think it's the board. Exactly the same behaviour with the stock RAM.

    Measure the voltage at 26x (and no BIOS voltage mod), then you can easily find a suitable mod. Lets assume you're in the same range as my 920xm (1.125V), then you can up it by 300mV by connecting VID4 (200mV) and VID3 (100mV) to VSS.
    VID5 probably won't help at all, for any value above 1.100V it is already set to "0"...

    You're totally right with all the different factors which can affect the result... my last CPU session was only about 2-3hrs, that's not enough time for a proper fine tuning and troubleshooting.
    My CPU was very stable at 31x and no FSB, maybe it'd be possible to get to 32x with a slightly higher voltage... You can still boost it with the BIOS. But keep in mind that the voltage regulator is only made for 1.5V max, better stay slightly below this. 1.45V is the Intel max rating for the CPU.

    Very true, I wish I had a week solid that I could get all done that I want. The mod is so easy, but its the teardown, and putting things back together that gets annoying. Nothing worse than reassembling the notebook after a multi hour benching session that yields no good results. :(

    Afraid DaneGRClose abandoned us with the updated db of posted or submitted scores, so there was no basis to compare performances or to know what was required for top scores or to determine what could be expected from various configurations. After repeated promises to update, he disappeared, apparently for good, and left us in the lurch. After that, interest and enthusiasm dropped almost completely. It has greatly slowed forum interest because the benching efforts so often led to other issues and topics.

    I can email the code to somone if anyone wants to start tracking scores. Though I don't know if I still have it for the M15x, but I at least have it for the M17x thread. I'd have to check Monday if I have it for the 15x. Doubtful though.

    Question !!!!!

    Anybody have a list of all drivers and the result. I mean, the fastest driver for 3DMark06 ?
    With all the new drivers im FAR away from my old record of 14008 points of 3Dmark06

    Have a nice weekend :)

    No, sorry, recently I didn't come around to do some serious benching, I plan to do so during the holidays.

    But it does a good job at stock clocks when playing MW3 and BF3.

    Did a good air cleaning today on:

    M15X
    Intel i7-720QM
    Cosmic Black
    1920x1080
    4GB, DDR3 1333MHz
    1GB ATI Radeon Mobility HD 5850 DDR5
    500GB HD
    9 Cell Li-Io Battery
    Driver: 8.911-111025a
    CCC: 11.11

    (All stats are after air cleaning, unless stated)

    NO OC (625/1000):
    Idling at 44c-45c (depending what time of day)
    (pre cleaning was idling at around 53c-60c)

    5mins of FurMark: 89c. Hitting 90c at about 5m30s
    (Before cleaning I was hitting 100c in about 1m30s..starting temp was 14c higher tho)

    WoW:
    Running OC @ 800/1050: 35m of WoW hit 78c
    (Before cleaning: 10m of WoW BG with NO OC hit 91c)
    (both starting at + - 3c starting temp)

    3DMark Version = 3D Mark Score (max temp hit during 3dmark run)

    No OC (625/1000)
    11 = 2288 (74c)
    06 = 11795 (no record)

    650/1000
    11 = 2353 (75c)
    06 = 11864 (77c)

    700/1000
    11 = 2479 (76)
    06 = 12074 (78c)

    750/1000
    11 = 2577 (no record)
    06 = 12118 (77c)

    800/1000
    11 = 2703 (78c)
    06 = 12324 (79c)

    800/1050
    11 = 2719 (78c)
    06 = 12410 (79c)

    Had mentioned to Rev earlier, that I was getting artifacting the second I changed my clocks in Afterburner. Figured out this was only happening if I had 2 monitors going. As soon as I disabled the other, and only had a main, 0 artifacting at all.
    1. Any thoughts on this?

    2. Overall, how do these stats/temps look?

    As you can see cleaning the laptop made a HUGE difference. I know re-pasting and replacing pads would be my next best bet, but I'm a little too scared to do this right now....I do already have Inap's guide downloaded though ;P.
    Probably gonna play SWTOR for a bit monitoring temps while OC'ed..and decide based on that about the repasting/repadding. Hopefully, I can put it off until I get a 6990m or something.

    3. Based on the info provided...would you recommend I not OC at all until pads/paste replaced? Does it look safe to OC as long as i'm monitoring temps? Is it that bad that I need to replace pads/paste even gaming stock?

    UPDATE
    4. One other thing...I ran skyrim on ultra with OC to 800/1050, and then with NO OC. Seem to only be about a 4fps difference. This was just watching fps recordings of the intro video side by side and comparing both fps in real time. Thoughts? Is this 4fps really all I can expect with OC'ing this much? Is this even worth it for a game like SWTOR?

    5. On like 3dmark06 what is the relation of points in ur score to fps in game. 500pts = ~ 4fps increase?

    Much thanks.

    Temps are ok, but a repaste would definitely help the temps to come down a bit. I take it you're at stock voltage?

    Cool, your GPU is probably able to go quite a bit higher when you increase the voltage, but I recommend to repaste before doing so.
    I'm talking about 900+ MHz on the core, RAM will probably manage 1150-1200 as well.

    But as I said, increasing the voltage will also result in higher temps, repasting is advisable for this.
    Man, I kinda miss my 5850m, was so much fun for benching.

    Your temps are fine, but keep track. As a general proposition, don't use more o/c than you need, but it's hard to quantify. A difference of 4fps is meaningless if your game is running at 60-70fps, but if you're at 25-26fps, that 4fps can be significant. The 5850M has huge overclocking headroom, so it doesn't need to be coddled so long as the temps stay reasonable (or even unreasonable but not fatal :) ).

    I miss benching my 5870s too. lol Think I could have squeeze a bit more out of them. In Crossfire they both ran at 1010core/1310 mem. And I'm sure I could have squeeze another 5MHz out of them :p 44% OC FTW!

    I wonder if my current 5870s could do the same. Probably. Never have time to dedicate to it through :(

    thanks guys for the quick responses. +rep

    last question. at what temps should I start worrying? is there a point where I should quit the game and let comp rest for a bit?

    I know I played SWTOR for like 5-8 hours straight the other weekend, BEFORE I had cleaned the vents etc...I can only imagine how hot it got.

    i know next week, im gonna be playing A LOT for extended periods of time. gonna start with regular stock clocks, to get a feel for temps fps etc.
    then i'll try the OC'ing. what should I be looking out for during gameplay at OC and STOCK?

    I just use 85c as a max temp i would tolerate, and at 90c i would just give my laptop a rest. In saying that, i have yet to hit those temps while gaming. Max i got was 75c playing crysis 2 maxed out for like 4+ hours oc'd to 700/1100.

    Hard to comment since the screen shot fails to show the graphics card, the clock settings, the CPU or even the resolution used.

    Now run '06 again at the default setting of 1280x1024 so that it will be comparable to other scores posted here. Looks like you should do well.

    Hehe, thank you Rev! Too bad you don't have your M15x still running... would've been awesome! :D
    I'm using a Dell ES card, seems to work fine so far. Hopefully I can find some time for testing during the weekend.
