sorry but this made me chuckle a little, i'll be honest. i remember doing something similar years back.

the problem is that the programs stored in "program files" normally require proper installations in order to get them working properly, while you can get away with it sometimes... usually you need to reinstall. things need to be added to registary, sometimes other files are added in other locations (such as the windows system folder), sometimes for anti-piracy reasons (key verification)... the reasons vary, but the result is the same (the program doesn't work, or only partially works).

i recommend you download the app installers and install them again, i know its a PITA, however it's the price to pay for installing the system again. This is one of the many reasons some of us turn to imaging software such as acronis trueimage and norton ghost.

I love the Fry's in my area (it's MASSIVE), but I've been to some really crappy ones before.

Got my M15x today. So far I'm really impressed by the performance and everything. Only annoying thing is that because of the sort of parallelogram shape of it, it doesn't quiiite fit into my old case >.<

What should I get to, like, measure the temps and everything to see if it's all good. I mean it seems amazing performance-wise, but even so I'd like to check.

I've been zooming around in Terran Conflict with performance even better than my PC - Core2Duo 8400 (3ghz) and 9800GT or GTX I forget which - and been better by quite some noticable margin actually, I'm seriously impressed. My M15x has the 5850 and i7 620m.

Screenies (just flying around a few terran sectors in the starter ship, haven't copied over my save games yet) Note that I'm using image shack but if you click the thumbnails you will go right to the full sized image on its own and not to some crappy page loaded with adverts:

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

And a few of me just coming in to dock at a shipyard.

I was playing TC earlier but mostly I've just been sitting around browsing and downloading my stuff from steam and battle.net.

Is 49 degrees (Celcius) ok for just sitting around. Edit: my clocks seem really low 100/150, I guess this is because I have powerplay on and I'm not in game or anything and it'll speed up when I need it...?

correct, 49 seems about right for idle. it can be improved by redoing the thermal paste yourself however it's not an issue at those temps. check load temps now and then to ensure it doesn't go too high... personally i set 90 as a benchmark, if it goes above 90... do something about it.

you're right about powerplay. when it works, it's great. when it doesn't... it's a PITA. i advise if it's working fine, don't mess around too much with the settings unless you want to accidentally break powerplay and then have to set your clocks manually (or reformat).

cheers poobah! glad you like it.
yeah i gave up my desktop for this baby since i'm always running around lan gaming with friends in spare time. i like the idea of having a PC with an inbuilt UPS and able to move it around quite easily :D

    it's not a laptop, its a desktop replacement :p

Well I'm pretty stoked, picked up a new 40" LED TV. I always play games on the laptop through the TV and the old one was a HD ready LCD, with the game on both screens you could really see the diffreence between LED and LCD. Now I got a telly than looks as good as the lappy :)

My M15X finally arrived today! It was like Christmas had come early when that massive box arrived, so exciting. Just a few questions..

BIOS A08 was preinstalled so I've not had much to do. I sorted out my AlienFX theme first and foremost (duh) and then dl'd ZoneAlarm, Avast, Malwarebytes and CCleaner. Then I updated my graphics card driver to 258.96, but I am wondering if I should have used the drivers from the Dell website instead, or whether the nVidia ones I used are best? I checked my idling temps using GPU-Z and they're 43c, after a few hours of use, and I think this is about average? I tested Portal out, not a very demanding game I know, so obviously it handled that on max settings like a dream. I'm looking forward to giving it a more demanding game to get it's teeth into in the near future. I hope I havn't forgotten to do anything!?

I love this machine already, it's superb :D

wow, congrats man. looks like you got everything handled. i wish i can help with the drivers but i don't have a 260m. btw i love portal too.

man kinda think of getting the M11x now, since its on sell but with the crappy cpu. but only $600 is kind of tempting.

Anyway, I was wondering if I plug two monitors on my lappy, i'll be able to extend the desktop, but will I be able to use both screen while gaming?
I guess no, is there a way to make it work? Would it work with a 5850m?!

Jeez. You guys must really have money to blow. I'm here having trouble finding the right time (Money wise :p) to go and buy a Dell 5850. I was DYING to get one since my current 5870 has no warranty T_T.

I know one was on sale here but it's probably gone now. Curse money =/

According to the experts on the ATI Driver forum at Guru3d, there will be no Mobility 10.9 driver set issued. AMD (CatalystMaker on Twitter) recommends using the 10.8 set until Mobility 10.10 is released.

Ordered 8GB DDR3-1333 from Newegg for $159.99 and the ATI 5850 for $279 from dell including tax+next business day shipping. I have some Artic Cooling MX-3 for the GPU core. Dell tech support said I can re-use the thermal pad on the GPU heatsink since my laptop is less than a month old. Is this true? I should be safe, yes?

I know that if you remove the heatsink (since you received it or applied the thermal pad) you should re-apply more and remove the old, because like the thermal pad (or paste) becomes "solid" when you remove the heatsink, it breaks apart.
In fact if you use again the thermal paste (but this applies more to thermal pads) it will not do good conduction for the heat generated by the GPU.

I've been getting this message lately tho..

ST Micro Screen Detection Sensor is out of date with this version of Windows.

Anyone know what this even is? I've never heard of it. Seemed to only pop up when i started using my external monitor again, which I havent for awhile.

That apparently happens when Windows Update installs the wrong driver for ST Micro Accelerometer (free fall protection). Download and run Drivers and Downloads to reinstall the correct driver.
