@faiz23 did ya upgrade from 720qm ... do u feel the difference.. how much performance gains are we talking about...

 

I upgraded from 720qm to 740qm under warranty for a replacement and felt no difference but going from the 740qm to 920xm was a big bump in performance and in gaming i experience a nice boost in GTA IV and BFBC2 which are both resource hogs on CPU. I also noticed a big difference in times for extracting files or rendering or working with converting video's and such. The benchmarks show a nice jump as well. My main reason for upgrading was i really want some sort of OC capability, unfortunately my motherboard did not support set fsb =(. i started searching around and found a real nice price on the chip and was able to upgrade to SSD along with 920xm both for a steal but had little time to think on the opportunity.

here is a test i had almost to p11k but cpu score of 20k and i can push it slightly higher and get like 21k all this on a 920xm ES chip.

I can get rid of the OEM 740qm chip and end up pretty damn close to what i paid for a XM chip and feel like that was a well trade-off and if you are a true nerd just the ability to tinker with multipliers and tdp/tdc is a blast and all your efforts pay off when you are gaming.

 

You could probably get more on the GPU and you'd have your 11k score right there.

 

Hey Wizard, for the second HDD do you intend to install stuff on it to free up some space on the SSD? If it's only going to be storage I'd go for the larger HDD but if I was going to run programs off it I'd go for the faster one.

 

I've got my 940xm ES available for anyone that wants it. Overclocks very well and is 100% stable. PM me.

Hey guys with lots of monitors, I have a question for you..
When you use two externals monitor, how do you plug em?
One VGA and the other HDMI/DVI?
Is there a way to have both on HDMI/DVI? Will a splitter do the job?

Well i have

1. my laptop lcd
2. my Samsung hdtv
3. a 24" pc monitor
4. a 20" pc monitor


now i just tried a bunch of things for u soccer thierry... cuz i was bored lol

So basically eyefinity only works on a max of up to 2 monitors on these laptops... which kinda sux but wtv...is understandable since the display outputs aren't on the gpu like they are on desktop gpus...

and yea you can connect 1 on dvi, the other on hdmi/DP

you can't however, have eyefinity working on 2 monitors hooked up to a hdmi splitter.. that would just duplicate the signal and duplicate yoru desktop...not split your desktop in half and display half on one monitor, half on the other.

Ok so now i just realized you didnt even ask about eyefinity and you dont even have an ati card LOLL..im burnt sorry

so yea if you want to display a bunch of duplicates of yoru desktop... you can just get splitters and it'll do the job

Might need boosters though after a while lol... depending how many times you want to split the signal...if you want to preserve quality

 

Ahah, thanks! Actually I asked about eyefinity earlier, so I could use two monitors while gaming with a 5850/5870?! Two externals? Thats great!

I don't really want to have three screens displaying the same thing, I'd love to have two 23" monitors displaying different windows, and playing a game with eyefinity!

SoccerThierry just to clear things up..... yea you can have any combination of two displays displaying at the same time whether it be eyefinity, duplicate desktops or extended desktops.... not 3

And a lil side-note... you all claim my laptop is all mighty n great... geeze guys its just a 5870m...lolz... i'd rather have an ssd n a 940xm n a damn 240m loll... i never even game anymore

Played some of the Medal of Honor Beta. Nice 55-60 FPS usually (everything high except for effects, 4x AA, 4x AF, 1080p), but when those damn smoke spammers spam their smokes, it goes down to 20 or 30. D:

so 920xm vs 940xm, is it worth the $150 difference?

I was under the impression the 940xm only had a different multiplier max?

 

My opinion, if you look at it % wise it's not worth the extra $150. Anyway you can oc the 920 if you like. I keep mine stock and it's more than enough.

 

Exactly, the 920XM is just the same processor as the 940XM.
Get the 920XM and dont worry about it!

 

i'm still waiting on J to send me back the money after thats it's fair game i'll def look into it, the only thing that worried me is he only have 3GB of ram most system came with 4, processor not worried about since i am currently happy with a T9600 on my gateway fx7805

Dont worry about that, 2gb of memory stick are flying for 25$ in the NBR's marketplace, and 4gb is all one need to have a great system, everything above is futile.

 

The RAM is what most people seem to be concerned about when they PM me. The 3GB hasn't been an issue at all for gaming, but other people may have more memory intensive games and applications.

Like you said, getting a 2GB module is really cheap now; even new ones can be as low as $40.

All that needs to be done to replace it is:

1. remove the battery
2. remove two screws
3. slide the back panel and remove
4. remove a few more screws over the memory
5. remove the old RAM, install the new RAM
6. put everything back together.

It's not a big deal like changing the GPU or optical drive.

 

yea any novice pc user can do a ram replacement...

 

well I think they're just concerned because they aren't up-to-date about prices or insecure about changing it themselves.

A computer novice thinker will know that RAM runs better when matched so maybe that's what they see

 

well i change ram in a desktop before but never mess with a laptop, i'm sure its not hard...

and guys i do need the extra ram due to me messing around with lightroom and do HDR image conversion so i say yea the extra ram is a requirement heh...hopefully no one snatch that M15x up, before i get my $$$ back

 

yeah any sort of multimedia editing be it snd/pic/vid will chew ram like no tomorrow, the more the better in this case.

 

My memory usage rarely goes over 45%, even atm, I have windows explorer open, about 10 tabs on firefox, VLC playing music, Utorrent downloading, an Excel document open, steam running in backgroud and my ressource monitor open and memory usage is >30%
Baw, it feels good to forget whats the feelings of having a slow computer.. I can honestly don't recall when/if this laptop slowed down!

yea i7's are amazing really... you really can't make it lag...and any lag you get is from your HDD not your processor...

you quickly forget how slow things USED to be on your non i7 pc/laptop lol... like when i use someone else's laptop... i want to whip it against the wall pretty quick... cuz i would forget that i cant click ie, ms office, and itunes in a span of 3 seconds like i can on my laptop lol... and everything would freeze up and not-respond

 

feels just like when I got my first hyperthreading CPU
