man u are one lucky guy how the hell did u talk dell into doing that?
-
same way i talked dell into giving me :
a 5870m upgrade from a gtx 260m
Free additional 9cell battery upgrade from my 6cell
A New LCD screen
A new touch Panel
3 new palmrests (colors wouldn't match untill finally the 3rd one worked liek a charm)
a New power Brick (the blue ring light wouldn't go on)
A new mobo
a new sound board
new audio jacks
hahaha... man my M15x is basically brand new loll
i guess you can say i'm good at convincing people of certain things -
thewhitewizard Notebook Evangelist
Just DO it J.... Njoy ur M17x.....
-
and u got so much out of dell with thhat thing -
lol well there is much more room for expandability...which is nice... more usb ports.. bigger screen...space for 2 hdd... 2 gpus... hdmi out... umm what else...numpad...full OC'ing capabilities with the cpu... so there is quite abit going for it....
and i WAS planning to upgrade to a M17x + M11x untill i had to dish out tons of cash recently...
but i don't think ill be able to do that for a while....
Size was the only thing stopping me from getting a M17x back when i first bought my M15x... and i would have to buy a new backpack n stuff now for my M17x... but apparently its not all that much bigger... and it makes complete sense based on a value point-of-view... an exactly the same spec'd M17x runs for $750 more than a M15x on the dell.ca site.... weird i know... so looks like i'm going to do it -
After having owned both on more then one occasion the only 2 things did not like about the M17x were the noise which is just insane in comparison to the M15x and the weight of the machine but both of those things are subjective to the user..
I have an M15x coming i just grabbed from the outlet for an amazing deal though..
Enjoy that M17x J.. It will be a new experience so thats always a good thing no matter what...
-
what do you mean the noise... of the fans? it gets loud? how many fans are there again...3? im rusty on my M17x specs lols
-
It sounds like a couple hair dryers when the machine is under load
..
I can hear the M17x 2 rooms away easy if i left a game running and walked away...
You cannot play games that require serious resources around other people without making them and yourself crazy lol..
Good headphones will keep most of the noise away though from yourself ..
There are alot of posts with people complaining about the amount of noise the machine makes but most current owners are used to it or they might even say it does not bother them lol..
Again though these things are subjective to the user..
I guess i am saying all this stuff just to prepare you for what you might be getting yourself into .. The M17x is amazing and with 2 cards is unrivaled but that will come at a cost of your sanity in the noise department..
With a single 5870 at 1920x1200 which was the last one i had i found the performance lacking at that res because the card seems to hit a wall right after 1920x1080 so you would really want 2 cards IMHO..
Not trying to rain on your parade because you have a good offer and you may want to take them up on it but yeah just throwing this stuff out there ... -
Dude... thanks for all your feedback... its exactly what i needed.
You didnt rain on any parade lol... i actually prefer ppl being 100% honest instead of M17x fan boys n M15x fanboys shooting either system down for no particular reason.
Quick question: How do 1080p movies scale to 1200p? does it look weird? or its not a problem?
About the gpu... well i guess i'd eventually upgrade to 5870's in XF...as the main reason i'd go for a M17x-r2 would simply be for future expandability.
Ok so i guess the golden question would be ...Quad...
Which laptop would you chose personally? Having used both? I greatly value your conctructive criticism -
Bluray scales just fine on the 1920x1200 screens so there is no issue there except thicker black borders at the top and bottom.
Which laptop would i choose ? I am not sure i am the best person to ask that lol because i go through alot of laptops but i will say my time with the M15x vs the M17x has been more enjoyable with the M15x but mainly due to the noise issues most of all..
I would hate to tell you not to give the M17x a spin because you may not find any of that stuff an issue but i will say if your used to gaming around other people say in a family room and such you wont be doing that with the M17x at all..
The weight issue is not a biggie since they are both big laptops but it is noticeable ..
I have an M15x coming so you know where my head is at the moment but i swore this last time i would not touch another M17x till they get the noise issues under control which hopefully happens on the next generation of the machine... -
That loud huh... Alright I'll take ur word for it... Thing is I dj... And I'm alrdy half def lol... And I don't rly game... And when I do I got it hooked up to a logitech z5500 Which would overpower any fan noise by a logshot lol...
But I greatly appreciate your help. Thanks brotha.
Guess I'll sleep on it. Maybe a lil fairy will come tell me which one to pick in my dreams... Lol I think i gotta cut down on the reefa -
Well if your half deaf then noise will not be a problem
..
If you dont game then again noise wont be a problem so i would say get the machine since its new and something different ..
Good luck though..
-
Really I find the best way to decide between the M15x and M17x is through your budget. The size difference is not material enough to make a difference. But for the amount I could spend, I found I was getting better specs on the M15x than the M17x.
-
He is getting a free upgrade to the M17x thats why the choice is more difficult for him

I got Lunar Silver 5850 1080p 6gb 1333 i7 720 Bluray 500gig 7200RPM HD Intel5300 Wireless for a Heck of a deal ..
Hopefully it turns out ok since its from the outlet you never know what youll get .. Its like Cracker Jacks lol.. -
i would take the m17x in a heartbeat
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Sounds great. What about your G73JW? Thought you were liking it pretty well.
-
You know me and i dont hold on to things for long these days.. Thats why this time im not even going to have a signature .. To many questions from people and i cant always give them the answers they want especially when it comes to why i sold a machine and for what reasons.. People tend to take things to personally sometimes .. Generally my simple answer is i was bored but they certainly dont like hearing that either lol. So yeah keeping it simple and ill let people guess
..
-
pretty much my config right now
So i'm pretty much set on the M17x...why the hell not. Gonna be a tank but well...who gives a damn.
Only thing that i just thought of now that sucks... is that i gotta call up my buddy that has the 820qm i originally got with this system n tell him i gotta swap back to send the system in... he probably won't be too happy with that lol ... we'll just swap back then afterwards since i'm gonna go all the way and get a 920 and see how high i can OC that beast in a M17x with a bigger psu
Like you said Quad... should be a fun new experience... and should keep me busy till sandybridge comes out...n by then i'll have a whole new scheme on how to get a replacement r2 with a new mobo n the new CPU... ahahaha i Love Dell... they're warranty honestly is outstanding
-
if I had an offer for an M17x to replace my M15x, I would take it instantly
I bought an external eSATA hard drive case solely because my 160g Intel isn't enough at all
If i could put taht HD internally that would make everything good, plus a numpad is something I use all the time and I'm forced to use a G15 keyboard still -
Would take the M17x over the M15x any day. Would add a second HDD and stripe to raid 0.
-
yea i've taken the plunge
Just waiting for the Dell rep to send me the confirmation email with the specs of the system.... and then maybe i'll try milking it further seeing what kind of components it has... hoping they accidentally put in a 940 lmao... (dreaming in color now lol)...
No but seriously... think its cheaper to order the system with a second 5870m now instead of upgrading in the future? the 2nd hdd... well... thats going to have to wait till the g3 comes out... -
wow nice congrats bro. enjoy the mind blowing power of the M17x.
-
Get the extra card now vs later.. It can be a hassle trying to get the secondary card..
-
Thanks Inap
And yea Quad i'll see what kind of deal they can give me.
So you think i can still hang-out in this thread even when i get my M17x? Don't mean to be a traitor lolll. -
I would not worry to much about that ... Heck for all the machines i have owned i would not be welcome in any of them if that were the case..
-
Awesome job J
I wish I had your harassing skills
-
congrat man, good bye M15x
such a sweet machine, i wonder if i call them up they can hook me up with that one lol
-
Congrats my friend. I'm gonna see if i can talk my way into replacing my girlfriend's XPS m1530 for a M11x or M15x. -
Thanks
LOLL... cross-brand replacements would surely top my replacement! -
The m15x is quite a good deal when I look at it, it's only about 200 more than a similarly specced 8690, but I got a decent bag and starcraft II bundled together, as well as windows 7 premium, though windows is rather useless as my university provides free windows 7 professional anyways.
For the build quality, to be fair, it is better than my 8690, I especially like the thick and rough palm rest, which doesn't leave palm prints after typing.
It is quite a bit heavier and much bigger as well though, and I don't quite like the lack of dedicated number pad, not as convenient for productivity purposes. The touch pad is actually better than expected after hearing all the horror stories on m15x touchpad.
Another con would probably be software-wise, much more troublesome in terms of driver update etc where I can just install no-nonsense style with my 8690. But overall, it's a rather well designed laptop that feels like more bang for the buck.
I've considered the m17x as well, but after looking at it, it is really too... damn... huge... -
Yay! I just got a call from ups, my m15 is gonna be here by tuesday!
I was thinking of checking if there is any bloatware, if there is doing a format and fresh os install... And then fixing my desktop, trying furmark to see how cool my system runs, and doing a small oc on my gfx card...
Any tips, or something else I should do with my new lappy? -
Dont worry about bloatware, Alienware are really professionnal and they dont install bloatwares of any kinds!
Itll be ready to use as soon as you get it!
Congrats on the system again -
In response to my previous post (yes, months ago):
http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...5x-owners-lounge-part-4-a-76.html#post6235717
To sum: I reinstalled control center from the cd, fried AlienFX, tech refused to install mobo replacement ("this is a software issue") and told me to reinstall Win7. After I did such to no avail, demanded he return, but he had sent the board back. Spoke to his supervisor, and she was supposed to get back to me but never did. I've moved, started school and other stuff in the meantime, so didn't really have a chance to hound these people.
Anyways, point is I called tech support today and they're sending a new board with specific instructions that the previous tech not be involved. I put in a formal complaint against him, and hopefully this should finally be resolved this week. Hans (tech support supervisor) was very understanding and at least with this call, I have no complaints. -
do I not have a mic in my M15x?
lol I've never used it without a headset. I took my laptop to my friends to show him SC2 and my friends can't hear me thru the "mic"
I started tapping everywhere and my mic meter went no where.
Do these nto come with mics? -
on the contrary... it has two. One on either sides of the webcame (those little pinholes) for stereo sound recording. Might have to enable it though. right click the volume icon in the taskbar. click Recording devices. window opens up. righ click microphone. click enable. Usually they're enabled by default though..

-
lol weird how that happens. I had just got home from work and it was pretty much exactly what I wanted, hadn't seen any in the outlet every other time I had searched.
-
Hehe grats mr9865, I got pretty much the exact same specs as you, bought it 2 months used from an NBR member here
-
just got my first alienware. m15x-r2. in love.
-
DaneGRClose Notebook Virtuoso
mr9865 - hopefully they'll send you a 1080p screen on accident like they did with me! Sweet system you'll love it!
-
I'm curious, if they send you something by accident, is it covered in your warranty?
Like if under your order it says 900p but you have a 1080p will it still be covered?
I've wondered about this since my original config was 6 gigs of ram and a 6 cell and i kinda got upgraded to 8 gigs and a 9 cell because of Dell's lack of attention to those details.
-
DaneGRClose Notebook Virtuoso
Yes and no, I called them and mentioned it and they said it will be covered and updated the system's specs. I have also heard some people getting stuff and dell saying if something goes wrong with it that they will replace it with what it was supposed to be only, and not what it was if that makes sense. It's nice getting free upgrades due to people not doing their jobs isn't it? LOL
-
so when using the VGA outlet I couldn't get 1680x1050 res on my Dell 20.1" (Which optimal res is 1680x1050). So I decided to buy a dPort-->DVI passive adapter (gg dell wouldn't send me a displayport adapter) and now I can do the resolution
funny that I couldn't with VGAWanted to save the $10 shipped
