Adsl speeds depend on your distance from the nearest telephone exchange. Larger the distance lower the speed. The isp's advertise upto xx mbps... "UPTO" sorry about that bro...but its best to phone them up and check if there might something which they can do
    ...
same stuff happened to me... Had to go with cable connection... Currently on 50mbps ... ;) lol!!!

Crap, it is windows, I just did a fresh install when I got the laptop like 3 weeks ago. I'm going to try a system file repair hopefully that fixes it.

Ubuntu had the control working perfectly.

    Thanks for the replies.

Ah, sorry I have to do this to you guys, but I am leaving the Alienware game. Already put my M15x and backpack up for sale. After a long week of deciding, I think mobile computing is just not for me. After wanting an AW for so many years, I guess it just didn't impress me as much as I would've hoped.

This is not goodbye. I wouldn't leave you guys if it was the end of time itself lol. Just had enough fun and it's time to get my desktop back out.

And of course, all my guides (all two of them...) are forever supported by me until the end of this forum's lifespan.

:( I followed your guide to put an SSD into my m15x, I also would like to get rid of the m15x but I won't get what it's worth. I can't find any laptops that appeal to me, the closest thing was the MBP which is stupid expensive and not worth anywhere what the cost (I use one at work) and the Envy, but the lack of touch buttons is a deal breaker for me, I hate using FN + "x" key to perform actions.

Hey guys, I finally got caught up reading this thread. You have a great group of people here. I am also a proud owner of an M15x! My XPS M1730's GPUs died in March and they offered to replace it with an M17x but I opted to "downgrade" to a loaded M15x and I don't regret it one bit! Here are my specs:

    Alienware M15x, Cosmic Black
    Intel Core i7 920XM
    1GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 260M
    15.6-inch WideFHD 1920x1080 (1080p) WLED
    4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz
    128GB Solid State Drive
    Slot-Loading Dual Layer Blu-ray Burner
    Primary - 9-cell (85Watt) Lithium-Ion Battery
Intel WiFi Link 5300 802.11AGN Half Mini Card

It sounds pretty much the same as Inap's, except I haven't swapped the GPU. I also don't have the faster Intel SSD, but hey, all of this was a free replacement, so I can't complain too much!

I followed the advice on this thread and bought some MX-3 and I'm going to apply it tomorrow. Should I take pics? I'm not sure yet whether I'm going to use the Pea method (doesn't reach the corners) or Spread method (might contain air "hot-pockets"). I might actually go with the X method, but getting just the right amount of paste might be tricky. I found this video pretty interesting: How Thermal Compound Spreads

I've also not overclocked it, since I've been using RivaTuner to prevent throttling in SupCom2, but RivaTuner doesn't overclock well, and it doesn't play nice with NST at the same time. But now that the new 257.15 beta drivers are out, I might have to uninstall RivaTuner and try NST again so I can get some of your crazy clocks. (Where can I get NST for 257.15?)

Anyway, I'm glad to be a member of the family. And I hope my avatar doesn't get me banned. :D

Thanks bro. Of course I'll be sticking around and pitching in when I can. I'm actually very new to PCs and Laptops. It wasn't until late last summer when I built my first rig and started learning. I only know two places, NBR and OCN, like my two internet homes.

Too much to read up on in such short time, so if I forget anyone, my apologies!

Thierry! Nice toy man! Saw one a couple of months ago, just before I ordered my AW. Loved it and the misses wanted to buy it for me. I said no cause I had other plans, which, of course, was the M15x! Congrats, man!

Identifier, welcome to our little family! You got a great set-up and your internet speed is to drool over (of course, I'm the guy with the slowest internet on the entire forum!). This is a great group we have here, man (especially if Villosa keeps dropping by!), and trouble is solved here faster than anywhere else.

Villosa, bro! Sorry to hear you're not into mobile computing. Maybe you should have started with one of toys Thierry (soccer) got, ha ha ha! Stick around, man. You're part of us now!

J-man!!!! Ah, no. You're still missing.

Inap! What's up my brother? Still covered in work? I am, but the project is great. Lots of crap about computers, networks, CPUs, GPUs, overclocking etc. Luckily for the customer I am better in translating those things than actually implementing them, LOL.

Man, I miss you guys but the deadline is way too tight to take any chances by hanging out here (miss the deadline, don't get paid a penny!).

Well, anyhow, soon "I'll bi Bahck!

    Enjoy your weekends, guys!

Hi Inap. Enjoy the 40oz!!!! I'm having a couple myself right now after working from 7 am till 11 pm, but don't worry, as long as I can't afford a second home, this thread is my second home, bro! I'm not going anywhere.

I don't think I'll go for BIOS A06 as I'm still on A03 and I haven't had a problem with my system -well, besides the DVD drive, but that was hardly a BIOS issue - and you know what they say, never change a winning team, LOL!

Thanks for the tip, Tuenkamen. Right now the drive is fine, though (well, I think. I hardly use that thing). The problem was that it stopped working a while ago, after I had popped in the third cd of my young lappie's career. But after calling Dell they fixed it next day with a new drive, so no prob.

Devil's post, Tuenkamen! Be careful or you'll get banned, ha ha ha!

International sales are usually safe if you allow the funds to clear into your bank first. Just document all your shipping, emails, PMs, and other communications and you'll be fine.

See guys, I haven't left you lol.

Not if it's in your bank. It really depends on method of payment and if you are protected from chargebacks. IMO internationals sales are a hassle and not worth the time.

Honestly, go with your gut. If you really don't like the deal then don't go through with it. You're the seller, you have the power to say no.

Hey guys. I'm sure you've seen the core parking thread by Mr Pras, and although I don't notice any difference on my 920XM, here's how to disable parking in these three scenarios without editing the registry:

    1. High Performance mode, when On Battery
    2. High Performance mode, when Plugged In
    3. Balanced mode, when Plugged In only
Open a command prompt as Administrator and run:

    1. PowerCFG -SetDCValueIndex 8c5e7fda-e8bf-4a96-9a85-a6e23a8c635c 54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00 0cc5b647-c1df-4637-891a-dec35c318583 100
    2. PowerCFG -SetACValueIndex 8c5e7fda-e8bf-4a96-9a85-a6e23a8c635c 54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00 0cc5b647-c1df-4637-891a-dec35c318583 100
    3. PowerCFG -SetACValueIndex 381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260df2e 54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00 0cc5b647-c1df-4637-891a-dec35c318583 100

And then reboot. The first GUID is the power plan (The ones I've shown are the default built-in power plans of Windows 7. You can run PowerCFG -List to see which plans you have on your system), the second GUID specifies the Processor Settings, and the last GUID (the one on the first page of this post) specifies the "Processor performance core parking min cores" setting. In english this means "The minimum percentage of active cores". The last value, 100, specifies that 100% of cores should always be active. (By default on Windows 7 it's set to 10%, if you're curious.)
