I hope that is the case.

I just tested out two different wifi cards (Stock 5300 and the 6300 i bought from Babyhemi) and with both i still have random packet loss. It's become really annoying and i was hoping it would just be the Wifi card but at least now i know i need to call dell and ask for a replacement motherboard to see if that will fix it.

Edit: Wow, all these people moving to the M17x is really tempting me -_-

Also I've been having issue with connecting to some wireless networks and then they are not discoverable at all very odd.

My M15x has had a weird issue lately.
When I log off for a long time and come back, my taskbar disappear!
I mean, the windows orb is still here, but I have NO taskbar!
    It's odd >.>

Oh and just looked at my WEI because of the other topic, and I saw my GPU (the aero one) has gone down to 5.5 O_O, maybe it's related?

Recently my DVD drive stopped being able to read any kind of CDs (DvD, CD, Burnt) so I finally got ahold of Dell and they're going to send someone out to fix it. I'm not to fond of the idea of someone else touching my laptop, -.- , but I suppose I really have no choice.

Only other issue I've had besides that, aside from throttling of course, is a odd sound, like audio feedback (whine), coming from inside my laptop.

man sorry to hear that, make sure the tech is aware of the odd noise coming from the laptop, so he can report it to dell, if the repair doesn't fix it.

Thanks for the concern, Inapp! I always enjoy reading your many informative posts.

Doesn't Dell contract out their repairs? Do you think its likely that if I mention it to him/her that it will get back to Dell? I was honestly just thinking about leaving out that detail altogether... I've lived with it for this long! =D

The tech is contracted out but they do have a direct line with dell. It's best just to have it log for future reference, but its up to you, if your okay with it then you don't have to do anything. Also its very handy to have a printed service manual with you, just in case the tech isn't fimiliar with this setup, because replacing the cd drive is one of the hardest things to do.

Sorry I don't have time to look it up right now, but this is confirmed by a Dell rep here on the forum. It's the thread where he tells us about the ATI cards. He clearly confirms you may change the card without voiding waaranty but the card is not covered.

    Hi all,

I'm considering buying an M15x soon and wanted to know how well it runs WOW in raids etc.

The build maybe the core i7 (1.6) 4gb RAM and the Nvidia 260M.

I would recommend the Radeon 5850 over the Nvidia option to be fair.

That setup should run raids fine, and fully playable (I think I was told 20 min frames?)

Just received my m15x today! I'm working, so I haven't had much time to mess around with it...but I noticed something interesting...they included a 'displayport to HDMI' adapter, along with all the other goodies in the accessories box!

Is this normal or is this something Dell just started including with the m15x?

    Hey guys,

anyone know if our beasties support wake on Lan? I've been playing around a bit but cant seem to wake the machine even after installing latest LAN drivers and enabling the checkbox "enable Wake on Lan from powered off state". I might also be doing something worng as well. Since there is no BIOS option for it, it might not be supported.

    Did anyone try?

And so after a long time of debating on whether or not to get the M15X, I just pulled the trigger and ordered the following specs:

    Cosmic Black
    Core i7 720QM
    ATI 5850
    320GB HDD
    1920X1080 LED-backlit LCD
    Slot-loading Blu Ray player
    Intel 5300 a/b/g/n WiFi
    4GB RAM
This is the replacement machine for my recently sold XPS 1640, and it's my 3rd AW laptop, so I'm stoked! :)

I just got my M15x and I'm liking it so far. The only thing I find weird is the size of the LCD bezel. Kind of looks funny how big it is.

Congrats man, awesome setup. Wow 3rd aw already, yeah this build is the best so far, your gonna love it.

yeah that bezel is kinda big, especially moving from a m17x you'll notice it right away. But the awesome screen quality makes up for it. Can't wait to see what you can do with this system.

Just got my M15x! I'm trying to install the 10.5 driver with this method but after I select the path, Windows always says that the best driver is already installed (the default VGA graphics adapter) and doesn't let me install the ATI driver.

I uninstalled the default Dell driver and uninstalled CCC and cleaned the registry with CCleaner.

Lots of people getting the M15x, and/or switching to the M17x...

On a side note, seems like whenever I start the laptop, the screen stays black until I get to the log in screen. Haven't yet tried the power drain trick, but was wondering if anyone else has encountered something similar?

Yep. It's the default VGA driver, it says so in the device manager as well. There's no ATI stuff left over, I ran CCleaner. But Windows apparently thinks the default VGA driver is the "best" driver for my display adapter.

That's bizarre. The path has to be pointing at the wrong directory.

Under default settings, ATI unpacks the 10.5 driver set to c:\ATI Technologies\Support\10-5_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc. Go to Device Manager | Display Adapter and right click on the 5870, select Properties, then the Driver tab, Update Driver | Browse My Computer . . . , then browse to and select the above described folder/directory, and Windows should install the drivers. Reboot and the 10.5 drivers should be active.

I finally got it work. I had to change the path. For some reason, it wouldn't install it when ATI extracted to the default path. Weird.

Argh, immediately after installing the 10.5 drivers, my cursor is now really big.

Any recommendations on downgrading to 10.3 or 10.4?

Edit: I'm going to try the 10.4 drivers but I can't find them on AMD's website.

Yep especially on power saving or if manually setting the lcd brightness to lowest or slightly lower it won't show anything till windows loads up. Actually I had this on my older laptops as well especially hp. This happens due to bios setting or sum sort.

Thanks! This might be the culprit since I keep my LCD usually on the lowest brightness as I generally tend to shut it down after using it on battery. I'll see if the problem continues after today.

I'm on my 3rd M15x right now thanks for all the goof ups at Dell. This 3rd system is not perfect either. The keyboard flex is still present and at this point in time, its just simply annoying. I'd think that dell would have made some improvements in QC. Anyway I'll be making a call to support center to replace it

My biggest problem is sending the system with a refurb Seagate HDD. This is the 3rd refurb HDD that they sent and every single one of them had this annoying clicking sound whenever the head tried to seeks files on the platters. If I'm sitting in a quiet room, I can hear my HDD click from 5 feet away. I still have my original Western Digital HDD (from my original M15x) and it is extremely silent.

Is there a way I can clone the entire contents of my seagate HDD (including partitions - esp the restore partition) onto my WD HDD (erasing the contents of WD HDD obviously)? I plan to just swap the HDD's without loosing the restore partition.
