Damn! Thats what theyve been saying since Joker initially called them. Looks like I'm back to square one. Buying a 5870 next week. I saw you mentioning that if you get a 5870 you should also get some thermal pads.. Got any suggestions for some good ones?
-
-
well if you plan on buying a card anyways, i suggest getting the 5850 from dell, since its only around $300, plus you will have warranty on the card. could be a good move in the long term. also i use the .5mm thermal pads from frozen cpu, but they are pretty pricey, but a sheet goes a long way.
EK Thermal Pad Sheet - 160mm x 155mm x 0.5mm - FrozenCPU.com -
Hmm okay. Last I checked the 5870 from babyhemi was ~340 plus like 20 dollars shipping. Dell Canada probably sells the 5850 for more than the American site but the warranty is something to think about since the two cards are made w the same parts.
Is there anything special about applying thermal pads or is it all stuff I can learn from watching a YouTube vid? I'll throw some rep your way too for being pro haha. -
If you get the 5850 you can have it warrantied with the system.
-
-
Leaning towards the 5850 now since I can get the warranty and and OC it to 5870 stock clocks. Thanks once again masters of NBR
.
-
nvm im dumb sorry for double post
-
Yes all new ATI cards are dx11.
-
great thanks for clearing the doubt from my mind. want to make sure i make full use out of the new water graphics when the new warcraft comes out this fall.
-
@inap
Just curious? how often do you change your video card cause if im not mistaken, the video card section of your sig is always changing lol. -
he has a gtx 260m and a 5870m that he keeps switching back n forth lol... the 260m when hes on the phone with dell to try n get a 5850m, n the 5870 for benching LOL... seriously though inap... do you just leave your m15x disassembled at this point? lolll
-
Haha, I went through a tube of thermal paste this week. But I have gotten real good at exchange the cards. I can switch the card, and drivers all under 10 mins. My tech guy was totally amazed, lol.
-
Inap is starting a new benchmark on how fast he can take apart and reassemble his laptop. CPU and GPU isn't enough anymore lol
-
The lid is finished. Can't wait until I get it.

Lol, sad thing is that I'm probably gonna take everything apart again, to swap to my newly painted case.
-
-
The lid on my new machine has a totally different black paint compared to my old one....
The new one is a much deeper black with texture and the old one had a shine to it and orange flakes..
Needless to say the new one is much nicer... Looks more like the M17x now... -
-
Loving the custom colors you guys are getting, but I'm sticking with my Ferrari Redness.
-
I usually like all things white (white ipod, white audi, white cellphone etc...), and my m15x is the only thing i own black... and mandrake your custom white m15x makes me jealous. VERY, jealous. lol
-
-
got bored tonight decided to swap the case. everything done will post some pix tomorrow.
here is a phone pix, will try to find a camera tomorrow to post some quality pixs.Attached Files:

Damn now I'm jealous and want to color my laptop... so many colors to choose from. -

-
-
how or where can i buy new parts? from dell?

ok thanks a lot mandrake

hmm was looking to see if ssd's went down in price, and saw the Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drive. its a 500gb hdd @7.2krpm, with a 4gb flash drive integrated and an advanced algorithm that moves frequently used programs and apps to the flash drive for fast access. Got really good reviews on cnet. said after 3 boots (since it adapts to what you do) the test laptop boot time went form 28-30secs to 12 secs. pretty impressive! also beats teh intel x-25 ssd for xfering large files. this mementus xt reached 39mbps whereas the x25 got 30mbps.
Oh yeah and its 124.99 on Amazon
I think this might be my high capacity&performance vs price solution!
Anyone hear any good/bad things about these hybrid drives? I'm honestly thinking about picking one up.
Here's the link if you want to see it for yourself:

Newegg or Tigerdirect had this on sale for pretty cheap a few weeks ago so I looked into it. Most of the reviews from people who actually bought it had bad things to say about it. So, I decided against it. Although, most people that have bad things to say these days have buyers remorse and, expect things to be perfect and then they realize how much money they spent and start negative feedback on things. From what I get. most people where expecting ssd performance from a non ssd hdd. If you go into it knowing it's not an ssd then you'll probably like it from what I read.
-
hmm what to do what to do... i'm not expecting ssd performance.. but i want to know if spending that money is worth it over my hdd.... or should i take that money, and save up for an intel x-25... as i don't see myself getiing any other ssd (mind as well go for the best if your paying top dollar right?) That being said, it'll be another 6months or so before i consider buying an intel ssd...
-
ok so call me dumb/lazy can someone post the installation list for win7
-
everything else
command center
OSD -
-
You know what, thats exactly what i'm going to do. Then put this 500GB hdd in a nice eclosure with esata, and i'm set. Thanks for helping me decide buddy
EDIT: Anyone know if Intel plans to release a 256gb verison of the x25-m g2? 160gb is borderline capacity wise for me... 256gb would be a little more reasonable. -
I have the 160gb and its about 60% empty. I have all my music on my externals hdd. Which is pretty neat.. Burning guess you need much more space than I do!
-
i have an ever-growing ( at a rate about 2 gigs a week) library of songs thats about 85gb right now... and i'd like to have all of it.. on my laptop without worries.... i use my lapto in the studio everyday... so i need it available... sure i can free up prob 30gigs of muisic i dont use n listen to anymore...but i rather not as that'll take a good month to go through and fish out.
-
Within n6 months they'll have some very affordable ssd drives. I've seen a lot of deals on the vertex 2 and, come a few months from now they'll be even better.
-
So I want to OC my 260M as much as I can without changing the voltage and I'm used to using rivatuner. i tried 650/1100/1600 and my computer spazzed out so whatever I use 600/1000/1500 and it at least doest freeze so that's cool.
I had tried to use evga precision but I don't think the clocks were changing when I was pressing apply? Is there a reason why? -
Sometime the computer bugs out when you have too many oc tools installed. Also try pressing stealth mode on/off before setting your new clocks.
-
So I guess you're suggesting unistalling rivatuner then trying to set the clocks with precision.
I also installed HWiNFO32 and am looking at the my video adapter's current clocks it's registering as 594/950/1458 even though in riva I have it set to the stock clocks of 550/950/1350.. Is this normal or is there another tool I should be using to just see what my GPU's current clocks are?
Going further down into the rabbit hole lol.
EDIT: Using CPU-Z though it updates accurately with whatever clocks I plug into rivatuner.. Guess I'll just check with that then. -
Meh nvm even using 600/1000/1500 in wow makes it freeze up... man I hate my 260M lol.
-
I've fiddled around with it soo much that i basically know all the ins n outs of it... trust me..
right off the bat, i'l tell you to stop using rivatuner to OC it. IFor some reason the 260m doesn't like Rivatuner and is EXTREMELY buggy with it..
Use Nvidia System tools 6.5... You'll be able to OC Much Much higher... i used to OC to 680/1100/1680 no problem on stock voltages...
Also, use the desktop 197.45 drivers... they're really stable... 197.17 is decent also.
if you need anything else just gimme a buzz -
Oh wow okay thanks J! I'll look into it when I get home from work. I also have a chance to buy a 160gb intel g2 ssd for 350 CAD. The guy takes it's Brand new and that the box was only opened to take pics of the drive. Should I jump?
-
I would
That's a solid 100$ cheaper than the lowest listed price i can find
-
ok here is finished M15x with powder coat, still haven't found a decent camera yet.
-
Ouuuu Me likey
especially the alienware decal.. adds a nice touch
Well done -
hahah thanks buddy, did i go overboard with painting the external hdd, lol.
-
oh thats what that is! lol i thought it was a wallet or something! Lol cool bro, and yea you kinda did
hahahah
-
Hey just a couple of quick Alienware questions for a friend.
Which is worth it more an i7 processor or the 5850 over the 5730? (IE if you had too choose between an i7 quad core with the 5730 and an i5 with the 5850 which one would you choose). In general is the i7 worth it over the i5?
What is the battery life like with a 9 cell battery on stealth mode with brightness at minimum and everything turned off/turned low?
How good quality is the Alienware M15x overall?
