The problem is you cannot do that with the 5870s in the M17x
Yes, you can do that with the 5870s in the M17x also but you get lockups/BSODs. It's doesn't work at all with the 5870s in the M17x. That's why I said it was different.
-
-
Yeah so its either a Xfire issue or the 5870 bios altogether....
Wonder if anyone tried flashing the 5850 bios to both cards in the M17x ?
...
-
I tested a single card and that was a no go. I wonder how different the vbios is.
-
Ah so you flashed a 5870 to a 5850 in the M17x but it would not post ?... But it will post in the M15x when flashed to a 5850 from the 5870 bios(like what Aliennewbie did) ?...
-
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
You flash this to , you flash that...it worked, now BSOD, it booted fine with this flash...i'm soooo lost. somebody hold my hand...
-
No I was just trying a single 5870 to see if it worked any better. The only flashing I did was with the Clevo 5870 and the MSI vbios.
lol, noob.
-
So what card do you currently have in your machine ? The Clevo or the Dell one ?...
-
My 240M lol....seriously because I'm waiting for my replacement heatsink which is sitting at home right now. I do have both the Dell 5870 and Clevo 5870 to test with.
-
hmmm gonna flash one or the other to the 5850?
-
Ahh ok lol... Im curios as to what you were trying to do to that Heatsink when you broke it because the heatsink that comes with this machine is barely made for the 5850 to begin with... There are portions of RAM not even being covered by the HS nor all capacitors etc are just exposed ... Nothing at all like the Clevo card which everything had a thermal pad and was making contact with the HS .... Wish dell had made a new one for the ATI card because this thing is lopsided and you need to wrestle with it a bit to get it to sit even remotely flush.... -
I don't think so unless I find a good reason to. I haven't tested the ATI 10.6 drivers with both cards in the M15x yet.
-
It's the same way in the M17x. It's not fully covering the card and some of the ram is exposed.
I was trying to make the Clevo heatsink fit in the M15x using some parts from the existing heatsink. In the end I didn't have the right tools to make it work but I'm getting both heatsinks again so I may try again but the piping is the difficult part. -
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
how you going to solder the pipes together?
-
They're not soldered. They are stuck on with a strong thermal adhesive.
This is what I use at home, LINK -

Here Mandrake:
Rengsey Mod for 5870 -
Nice, does the bottom cover slide on easily? When I was testing there wasn't much head room.
-
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
i hope that stuff transfer the heat like cooper -
Not like copper but it is a thermal material.
-
What kind of results did you have with your temps ?...
-
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
-
Did you cut the plate where the heatsink met the die or did you have two layers of thermal compound?
-
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
I cut it. That way there is not that much pressure against the GPU chip.
Those was from my previous post with the Clevo 5870 in the m15x. -
Looks like you were golden. Why did you change it?
-
Very interesting Rengsey
..
I had to call Witcher when you mentioned about combining those 2 heatsinks together Mandrake because he welds/solders etc etc and knows metals very well so i wanted his take on the whole thing .... He is a little gun shy with the keyboard so he wont post all his thoughts etc like i am sure he would like to ...
If the Heatsinks are truly glued together with thermal adhesive and your careful enough then it should be possible to combine the 2 of them together i imagine.... As they say though you dont know if you dont try
.... And i wish you luck on your project ....
-
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
I have lots of heatsinks for you all to try.....
-
or you have an adhesive agent that can weaken the bond and just easily remove the pipeing from the HS. simple and effective
-
Tell him he can make me one.
Too bad you don't sell the AW heatsink. They charge me twice as much as you do. (That doesn't mean raise your price.
)
-
I was thinking acetone but I was afraid that would "eat" too much.
-
um ive been looking how about Goo Gone apparently removes adhesive from copper surfaces (takes care of the clevo HS not the aw one). read it somewhere after searching google its only $5, worth a shot.
-
Lol thats also why i called him to see how feasible it was but he was pretty much like NO right from the get go
...
-
acetone might be good actually stated here
-
what number do you recommend me to change the memory frequency and FSB frequency for i7 720? =/
im not good @ this.. -
I'm surprised that option is not grayed out. I thought it was for C2D systems with nVidia chipsets. Probably does nothing if you try it. Does the default show as 133Mhz?
-
You cant change either of those things on the machine you have .... Only thing NST would be good for on your machine is overclocking the Video card.....
When InappropriateName_3 mentioned NST earlier he just assumed you knew it was for the GPU only.... -
yeah i posted that for rensey.
also rensey, i remembered you said the heatsink mod didn't work, you said it would boot with that mod.. -
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
It didn't work at first, but it did once it made full contact of the heatsink. (I had to cut the plate off the Clevo heatsink where the GPU made contact with the GPU chip, so the Original m15x heatsink took place thereafter) -
I just installed the Dell card with my new heatsink. The drivers installed with no issues. More proof that the 5850 and 5870 are the same cards and the M17x still has hope for these cards if they straighten it out in the system bios.
-
Very nice man... How much did that heatsink run you from Dell ?...
-
Way too much $47 and some change.
I put a video in for 5 minutes and it played great and maxed out at 44c. I will need to try a game tomorrow. -
Did you use the stock thermal pads ?... Also what is that part number incase i decide to order another Heatsink ....
-
Yes, stock pads with ocz freeze.
The heatsink part number is F41CJ. -
Thank you sir
...
I still think the stock pads are abit to thick or atleast mine are because i had to use more paste then i ever would care to ...
My temps are good but i know they can be better so ill be doing some tinkering .... Worst case ill order another Heatsink if im not happy ... Wish i could learn to leave well enough alone
...
-
lol, I have a bunch of .5mm pads if you want to try it.
-
If you want to toss a couple in the mail id be happy to
..
Might save me from having to order another heatsink...
I redid the paste the other night and it took me way to many tries before i got even decent contact and removing the heatsink would sometimes leave me with only 1/4 of the GPU hitting the HS so i know something is off and i had to go out of the screw order to get better results so im thinking maybe the heatsink might be warped(or the pads are to thick) ....
Sad part is when i got the machine from my friend he already had OCZ on there and my temps that i posted with the first benchmarks were good/great temps but of course i cant leave stuff alone i had to go in and redo it and all hell broke loose for the next few hours lol till i could get the same results back.... blah.... -
I know it's not the most accurate and stable of benchmark numbers, but I had a question regarding the WEI numbers...
My system scores seem pretty normal, but WEI rates my CPU score at 7.0. Most others I've seen with the 720qm have been rated at least a 7.1
Sure, it's not much of a difference, but I've run it multiple times, getting the same score. Any concerns I should have regarding this? I have my power management set at High Performance, and have made sure stealth mode is off each time. -
WEI is nothing to worry about
-
sweet, gonna try it out. you wanna sell your old heatsink?
-
-
nice stock score and im guessing your going to flash to higher clocks?
