I haven't tried the clevo card with the 10.6 drivers yet. There is some major throttling going on when the core hit 900Mhz and it's very obvious. I'm playing with that issue right now.

wow, interesting, keep us posted. btw 10.5 and 10.6 weren't that good for me, i couldn't push them as hard as 10.3 and 10.4.

Have you flashed a Clevo bios on the dell 5870 yet?

I already found a solution to that. I'll post it up in the M17x owner's thread tonight or tomorrow morning. It's fairly straightforward. For improving the heat dissipation of these heatsinks, I was toying with the idea of stacking copper shims on the heatsink itself and in areas where there isn't good coverage. It would still add surface area to the heatsink and provide better cooling.

    No I haven't.

Regarding throttling the magic number is 70c. I ran Furmark version 1.7 (what is everyone else running?) and I did the stability test/extreme burn. Temps never surpassed 70c because you can see the GPU utilization go down in hwinfo once it hits that temp and then immediately drops 15c. I want to see if the Clevo card does the same in this system.

And you observed this only at 900+ mhz right? I mentioned this awhile back in the M17x thread that the 5870's throttle once they hit a high OC. BTW I used the Asus signature hash file on the Dell 5870 to unlock overdrive but it didn't work. I then created my own Dell 5870 signature file and it still wouldn't show ATi OD in the CCC despite it being unlocked in the bios. This vbios is definitely a PITA.

I experienced it at 900Mhz core running 3DMark06. I had to over-volt to 1.12 to get it to run then I saw the throttling. I saw throttling with furmark at stock clocks as soon at I hit 70c. Right now my testing has halted because my Clevo card isn't working anymore.

What happened to the Clevo card? Hmm throttling at stock clocks with furmark is strange. I definitely don't get that. I wonder if it has something to do with the M15x bios and it's infamous throttling.

I get the typical two lights blinking when a card is bricked. The last time I did anything with it was before I broke my heatsink. It worked fine so I didn't make any changes to cause it.

I cant say i have ever seen this system throttle at all during gaming nor furmark but with furmark i rarely just sit there and watch it, i just let it run and come back ... If the cards were throttling during gaming i would have certainly seen it but it may be a furmark thing... One thing though i am certain of with furmark i have never seen it drop X amount of degrees and then start going back up it just keeps climbing(i usually eye ball it once every 2 minutes or so to check the temps)... Most i have ran it at 750/1050 is like 12 minutes and it hit 90 degrees even and i just shut it off ....

I think i am running furmark 1.8 ? its the Multi GPU one...

Just for the heck of it maybe flash it to the 5850 bios and see if you have any different results....

Maybe its a power issue with that 920 ? speculation of course ...

No I've had the 920 since day one. I can't flash the card since it won't post. I don't know if the trick axeman posted for the system bios would work or not.

No i was talking about flashing the Dell 5870 to 5850 since i dont see any issues on my end(throttling etc).... As for the Clevo card its worth a shot with what Axeman wrote ...

Here is the step from Axman's guide that needs to be tested.

Just re did my paste i got the GPU seated much better with how long it took the temps to climb .... It bounced at 87-88 for around 3 or 4 minutes so i just cut it off .... Clocks are still at 750/1050 no cooler etc.... Extreme burn mode post fx 1280x1024

If that is the case I think it will work in the M15x. I had the same affect with the Clevo card in the M17x. I don't need crossfire, I just need it to stop throttling at stock clocks.

Well I used the 5850 vbios and still throttled. I even upgraded to Furmark 1.82 and still no help.

@Quadzilla...what system bios version are you running. I just checked mine and saw I was a version behind.

Edit: Looks like the A06 bios for the M15x adds the 940 support.

Yeah i am on A06.. I never experienced any throttling on A05 either though..

Does Inappropriate ever throttle on his machine since he also has a 920 ?..

Maybe try the 720 in there when it arrives and see if you still throttle with that ... Might help pinpoint the issue..

I think you're right. I was able to lower the multipliers on the 920 and it got up to 80c in 5 minutes. I didn't see gpu utilization drop below 98%.

Flattening the thermal pads helped .... Will see how much long term help they are after hours of gaming... So far my temps are a few degrees better after running a game for a couple hours... Not sure the little fan can fight off the temp that will increasingly build overtime though...

Are you using the stock pads on there now Drake ?..

Yes. I haven't had any issue with contact. I'm assuming at this point your heatsink might be bent/uneven.

Yes hopefully by the weekend I will find out.

This will tell me what i need to know but even if it were slightly bent my temps are good ill just be wondering if they can get better :)...

Haha looks like ill be one of those poor saps :D...

It certainly should be better but i question any of this because of the tiny fan .... At the end of the day the FAN is doing all the work and im not sure it can really keep up with the temps regardless ... I am speculating of course but it really is mostly about how strong that fan is...

My temps are better now then ever but after hours and hours the internal temps keep rising and you need a super fan to expel that heat....

Most of all these tests are in short bursts like 10 minutes here and there or a Vantage run etc... Not really indicative of long term temps which is what im more interested in ....

I dont use coolers either so i guess thats why i am in a battle for the best overall temps ... None of this is actually necessary but it gives me something to do lol...

I find it amazing that Alienware/Dell found it not necessary to cover so much of the card whilst Clevo has everyone square inch covered....

It also makes me wonder how much any of it is really needed since even the Clevo cards are fully stable under hefty OCs in the Alienwares....

I cant remember how much of the G73 card was covered compared to the Clevo....

btw rev getting new 5870, lol hopefully with this new card i can break moo's record.

What temps did you get in Furmark, Inapp?
