Don't use other card's vbios (I found out the hard way), just get the vbios from your 5850 with WinFlash, change the clocks RBE, and reflash it with ATIflash in a bootable DOS enviroment. zFactor has a great guide to make the flash drive bootable.
-
I tried going to 925 and it froze, so I tried amp the voltage up to 1.2 (up from 1.1) and my AMD GPU tool stopped working for me.
Have to reset to my normal bios. -
man if you can push 925 that would be insane, did you try 900?
-
Damn i really wanna try flashing it but after reading about the bricked cards i don't think i have it in me >_<
-
someone set me straight here... you guys are talkinn about flashing to set voltages? or stock clocks? vbios? Im not too clear what yall talkign about lol...
I usually associate flashing with setting voltages... somehow im not getting the same impression here...? -
you can set clocks and voltages with flashing. everything you need i linked in the last page. and rep the wiz for his time writing it for me.
normally i flash to my max stable clocks then oc alittle bit to bench. -
oh ok so i when i find stable "decent clocks" lets just say... 800/1100 run perfectlyt stable.... i flash my 5850m to keep those clocks as stock...so when i reboot, it'll always keep the OC....
And then from there... when im pushing my card to its limits for benching.. i use AMD gpu clock tools to temporarily OC the clocks for the bench/game/wtv....
correct? -
yup you got it. geez you learn quick, hahahah
-
lol well its nothing too complicated...and i used to friggin OC cpus/gpus back in the day like crazy...
And flashing a gpu can have several meanings lolll
from flashing to diff stock voltages, to flashing voltages to flashing vbios'...
Wasn't sure what everyone was referring to and i wanted to be on the same page
Thanks buddy! Can't wait to get that badboy now
-
I pretty much do what you described, only instead of high stable overclocks I was trying to undervolt it further. Once I have a card with my Dell warranty I won't care though (and will overclock it to its limit).
-
I just got my first 10k score. P10012. I hit 9615 with a 900/1100 overclock on GPU, but my CPU only scored 11400. :/
-
wow impressive, now need screen shot or it didn't happen, hahahahah
yeah now i'm back to full power, 5870 back in. yea!!!! -
-
wow looks like these 5850s are keeping up with dem 5870s
.... just purrrfecctt
Cant wait to push mine when it comes
-
wow must have been annoying to make the switch back n forth! LOL... how many times have u reapplied that thermal paste now?
-
wish i could, but i'm in a hotel with ty internet and it struggles to load even notebookreview. I've got the pic on my HDD, but i can really upload it ATM. :S
-
When's this being updated again?
-
I know mb67 and I have been updating on NBF.....
-
Mandrake im getting my 5850m installed tonight, so if everything goes well, and if i have enough time to play around with Oc'ing it... i might be giving you some more work
Lol
-
Sounds good.
-
I just hit 5 FPS during the 3DMark06 CPU test. I don't think I've ever seen it do that with any of my notebooks. Not even the G73.
-
-
Here's a benchmark....highest CPU wattage...lol
-
LOL? it does that cuz it doesn't use the gpu at all for that test. Whats it usually.. like 2-3?
-
Correct, sometimes 4 will blink on quickly.
-
what??? thats insane, hahahah so what score did you get for the cpu?
-
Hey guys! Not to repeat post and be annoying or anything, but I'm gonna do just that :O haha. What do you think of my 3D Mark 06 score?
-
6500
-
wow 6500 geez. gave us all a chance why don't cha,lol
and zcwickliffe your score are good man, keep it up. -
Your score is fine but you GPU temps are way too hot.
-
I suppose everyone here knows about the CPU Overclocking? We got it working today!! Check my sig for a link and let's get those benches up
-
I donno if you guys read the throttling thread but...
DELL GAVE ME A 5870M BY ACCIDENT!!!
AHAHAHAH!!!!! woooooooo! IM SO HAPPY!
except its supposed to be in a m17x, and right no wits in my m15x, installed with 5850m drivers from the dell site. Mandrake! help! what do i do first! ( i remeber reading it can get bricked somehow if i do sumtin wrong?)
Heres the proof im not lying (as this sounds too good to be true even for me!) -
Mine has the same card in it right now. You can use any driver you want to....install one and enjoy.
-
Thermal paste is going on in a few days, as soon as I get a new tube of thermal paste (went with IC7 this time). As far as the temps go, is there anything else other than raising the back end that I can do to lower them? The CPU temps are just fine as you can see, It's the GPU I need cooled.
-
I use a Cryo NZXT which works well.
-
which drivers you using mandrake?
The dell guy absolutely had no idea what to do. first time he saw an alienware. He watched me do everything LOL.
I forgot ocz freeze in my car which my brother has! so he use dthe chepa crap dell uses.. but to my surprise.. im idling at 46~47C. BFBC2 maxed out at 70C. Petty good so far? -
I'm using Cat 10.5 right now but I know 10.6 works also.
-
Those are great temps... I would not even bother replacing the paste again since there is always the off chance it might get worse
.... You have been warned
....
-
Lol yea but how good can the generic stuff dell uses be? Those temps are good even for stock clocks?
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Paste is not your problem with Temp 1 (core) at 71.5*C, that is excellent. The high temps are the memory chips (95*C), which would suggest pad issues. But more fundamentally, 1187.5 is a very aggressive overclock on the 5850. You can probably drop it back to 1100 +/- with little or no decrease in performance, but a measurable reduction in temps. Then try easing the core to 825 or 850. You may end up with more performance and less heat overall. -
I found out something interesting- I installed the ATI Stream program and set the 5850 at 850/1075 then ran 3dMark Vantage. I had to stop the benchmark due to the really low frame rates.
-
Bloody awesome!!! WOOOHOOO!! Nice one buddy
-
Honestly i use OCZ freeze like you planned to but if your load temps are good then just leave it as is (if your capable of that as i can never leave stuff alone and sometimes regret it
) ..
Run Furmark for 10 minutes and show us your temps thats really all you need to do ... This will tell if you have good contact or not.... -
ok just did that... ran it for 13minutes actually...
temps fluctuated between 80-81 degrees celcius @ stock clocks.
How that? I'd say thats pretty good no? For standard paste
-
It depends what part of the GPU that was. If that was the vram that's amazing, if it's the core it's typical but still good.
-
#1 74
#2 80-81
#3 75
So what's what exactly? I'm new to the 5870m n i havent rlly been following in the past when i had my crappy 260m. Man oh man im loving this card
-
The hottest one there is the vram, and that's an awesome temperature. I wouldn't touch anything there. Try overclocking it now!
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Very nice temps. Don't change a thing.
-
Yeah certainly just leave it like it is .... Dont even tempt yourself into thinking you can make it better because the odds are you wont
