if i get it, im going silver.
i have the m15x and thought the dual color scheme was odd looking as well, but when it showed up at home, i was happy with it...

 

The silver looks cool, but there is just something about black anodized aluminum... YUM!!!!

 

Hopefully skullcap tomorrow ! Im still going to buy it even if it doesnt have skullcap because it looks really cool anyways, and it still has the iconic alienware look.

 

I wouldn't mind getting in in the polished aluminum finish so I coulld rough up the finish and get it anodized in a custom color.

 

ya one completely anodized(maybe red) would be wicked for sure.

With dual 280's? Pretty sure it'll be quite future proof. Dual 8800's still pack a punch.

 

Have you guys seen the new Nata or whatever, for the 360 (motion sensing, etc.) looks really cool

Even better question... Which color lights do you think looks coolest in the picture?

I was partial to the green, but if you cover the alienhead background with your finger and turn on the yellow lights, it looks sick as hellllll... If you don't cover it, the yellow clashes with the red eyes.

 

The lights are customizable, so it's not like you have to stick with one choice

 

I am so glad this new rig is built of aluminum instead of cheesy plastic.

I can work with aluminum much easier than plastic.

 

I know lol just making conversation as to which color people thinks looks coolest.

It looks like the palm rest and screen bezel are plastic, but the outer portions, both on the body and the lid are aluminum.

 

It's awesome that they use a aluminum chassis... uhh just curious, I've narrowed my search for the laptop I'm buying next month to a Sager 9280 or this... What Chipset does the new alienware use, and does it have 2 MXM 3.0 slots? and as for the Sager does it have an aluminum chassis as well?

 

Actually, several of the A.W laptops already have a magnesium chassis.

The new M17X is the first to have an aluminum lid etc.

 

lol I was about to ask the exact same thing, the only thing holding me back from buying this beautiful beast are the MXM slots and some reviews, so.... does anyone know if this m17x is using MXM 3.0b?.

I've arrived at a dilemma...
As many of you might already know (lol), my grandfather is buying my new computer for me, and honestly I haven't even talked to him about which one I want yet.. lol I've figured out decent, and relatively technical, ways of approaching the "need" for any upgrade I'm looking to make from the base model. For instance, I'm gonna tell him that the difference between 3MB and 6MB in the processor cache is worth the extra $$$.

The only problem I foresee in attempting to convince him that the computer I want isn't super-duper overkill is the GPU situation...

How can I convince him, in technical terms, as to why the upgrade from Single to Dual 260Ms is worth the extra $300? lol

 

Is that the hint youll be getting one sooner ? rather then later ? that response is a little cryptic

 

Unless he knows about computers how the heck is he going to understand anything your talking about period ? lol . all you need to tell him is that this part makes it faster and faster is always better when it comes to computers .

Tell him it's like a longevity option, a single 260m will give you around 3 years of life, and dual will give you an extra 2 to 3 years of life, that ought to convince him.

It's not so much taking advantage of... he wanted to buy me a Macbook Pro, so I'd like to think I'm doing him a favor by cutting a couple hundred bucks off for a much better computer =P I just want to make sure his investment doesn't go to waste, cause if I had the money to buy the computer, I'd much rather buy it myself and get even more upgrades, but this was his idea lol

 

Well lets face it a macbook pro is much more ideal for school then a 12 pound notebook with a 4 pound power brick lol , i think the brick almost weighs as much as the whole macbook .

 

Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part.

And I'm buying a tiny netbook thing-a-ma-gig for notes in class and 'simple' computations. I plan to use the Alienware for anything outside of class.

when switching to integrated graphics, does that completely shut off the video cards? If so, with a dual core (not quad), this thing should get decent battery life?

 

Why don't you just give it to him straight.

Tell him a $1500 rig will give you what you need, but you really, really want the more expensive rig cause you like to game too?

i was going to tell him the same exact thing , sometimes honesty is the best policy.

 

It will be straight, pretty much. I'm gonna show him the one I want (the M17x, cause it's cool as hell and awesome for gaming), explain the usefulness of different upgrades, then HE'LL make the final decision. He knows quite a bit about computers, so I'm not exactly trying to swindle him. It's more like a researched and educated attempt to convince him that upgrade x or y is worth the extra $$$.

He could just shoot me down all together and say no to the Alienware idea entirely, which at that point will be fine with me, but he asked me to do research, and I've done it.

 

You should take a look in the toshiba forums as they have a SLI rig that also has the 9400m built into it for power saving mode and see what kind of battery life they get , might be a good indication of what to expect . The motherboards are using very similar tech.

 

Getting a base M17X might be easier than you think. The price for a base model isn't bad and you can let him know it's got a metal chassis and an aluminum exterior so it will be very durable.

Then, when you've saved up some of your own cash, you can buy a second 260. Then a more powerful processor, then..................................

 

Then what?! I must know!!! lol j/k

But that's already my plan. If he'll buy the base model but has a problem with upgrades, I'd much rather actually have a 'good' AW computer than have to look elsewhere to work in the upgrades. The choice 'not' to get an apple lends it self to that same idea... I'm fixed on the aesthetics of the computer itself as a primary factor. lol

 

Jumpboy..your grandfather is probably happy to send away his money if you do well in school, focus on that. Get 3 A's and 2 B's and he'll probably send the money to upgrade to a QX9300 lol...I used my M17 daily in college, although I am 6'1 and 210 it does take a toll on you occasionally. That said I was fine lugging it around, got used to it and you should've seen all the stares I got in class and the union. I didn't regret using my M17 as my main college and home computer and I think you'll be fine if your willing to drop a few beads of sweat once in awhile =)

 

Straight A student this far lol we'll see what happens in college.

And yeah, I know it's heavy, but I'm willing to make the sacrifice... lol =)
