BACK from E3 .... Alienware booth meeting:
guy does not know much.... and won't let me take apart the M17x
I just wanted the bottom panel off to see the videocard module and he was like...
"Um, sorry we do not do that here"
Me:
"It will only take 10 secs" (popped my precision screwdriver set)
AW rep:
"Sorry, but I will have someone email you the tech specs later"
Me:
"So you do not know the MXM module information?"
Him:
"No." (looking awkward)
.... pretty went on like that wasting my time.
He knew his AW systems (to a point) but not heavy on the technical side... as well as lacking the knowledge of ODMs and OEMs.
He seriously believed that Alienware designed manufactured that thing.... ROFL.... and he never heard of Quanta.
Seriously now, why try to sell/market a notebook (showing that you are skilled) when you do not even know where it all begins.... ODMs/OEMs.
I admit all of those M17x refreshes (like 24 of them on the showroom) were nice and sturdy.... and well as gamed pretty well.
But I just wanted to grill them on which type of MXM module it is....
- the MXM 3.0 (Type A / Type B)
- or the old MXM 2.x (Type I,II,III,IV)

Well in the new M17x comprehensive spec manual it states that the video cards are MXM type 3.0 b, so I guess we're good in that area

Sadly Im not surprised Gophn. They probably sent some stooge that was well-connected in the company instead of sending their best technical people to be able to answer technical things.
Thats what happens when you fire your PR agency (done several months ago to rein in costs). PR blunders (and I consider this to be one) will be more frequent and reflect badly on the company. -
I know it said that.
But I wanted a hardware confirmation... with a high-def picture.
And I wanted to see the SLI bridge. -

I can understand that, even though its officially stated in their comprehensive spec sheet, and pretty much a given considering the 950 memory speed on these dell nvidia cards, it would be nice to see it for yourself, too bad they had some noob working there and you couldn't get a look at the insides of the beast. -
Enter Coupon Code: "NQVX4R5XXSVD0T" (without quotes) for 15 dollars off an m17x
-
the Uk price for one of these is out of this world, when compared to an m17 you are paying £2000 more for the 280 gpu :S

Yep everywhere except for the US dell is price gouging right now, pretty pathetic actually... you would think they actually want to sell systems elsewhere other than just the US but with the prices they are charging in Canada the UK, Sweden, and pretty much anywhere other than the US they might have a hard time, because the prices are utterly ridiculous.. -
Random question- what's in the "restricted" area of the all powerful site?

MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
No I felt stupid there... I was like ahhh swing and a miss... You see sometimes my jokes miss their mark a little lol
-
the restricted area has alienware wallpapers and screen saver and a video of the making of the m17x.
-
Well One thing I do know the m17X frist generation you where able change 4 Keyboard sections. So the keyboard could be Blue Red Green Purple just on the keyboard it self at the same time and Morphin or Pulse. Plus The other sections like volume Alienware name and Alienware head. By Looking at the new M17X sec. Genration. There like 2x the colors.
-
Take a look 6179 is the code.
edit: never mind I see you got in. -
Notice the AW eyes pulsating when he's holding it?
-
You guys are true AW folk. It's been like that since at least the XPS M1710 but it had lots of bugs early on.
-
EPP still not fixed.
ETA on shipping will be August before I order it. -

Looks like you went for the $1799 special. Plan on doing all the upgrades yourself?
-
^ weirdest config ever?
-
I am going to upgrade to the t9900 myself and i am going to upgrade to that raid 0 ocz vertex's myself, I chose a single gtx 260m because the only games i play are gonna be Starcraft 2 and diablo 3 which all I need is a single 260m and i can always upgrade to a dual solution later if need be. Oh and I chose the lower resolution because 1920 x 1200 is kinda small text for my taste and screens look better run natively and ill be using a lower res closer to 1440 x 900 regardless.
-
For the gpu I would be careful. I was going for dual 8600 for my frist gen M17x. and found out it did not support the 8800gtx or 9800gt. Cpu that I dont know about.
-
the m17x new version comes upgradeable to 280m gtx sli. So my bios and drivers for my model will support it if its an available configuration.
-
I like everything you did (and plan on doing) except for screen rez but that my own personal preference.
Congrats btw! -
thank you and for the most part 90% of the time it will be hooked up to my Samsung 24" widescreen lcd via DVI so spending extra on a screen was not a priority,
-
Ah, if only you had a HDMI connection on the Samsung.
-
why? it's the same exact quality regardless.
-
Yeah unless the samsung has speakers built into it then HDMI wont matter, other then the convenience and ease of using a HDMI plug Vs a DVI plug.
-
I'm assuming you're transmitting the sound to external speakers then?
-
logitech z5500 speakers i will output to
-
My bad then. =)

Access to CPU and GPU for exchange/removal is done by removing the keyboard and keyboard/palm rest chassis. -

Price From - £1,699.00
Starting Price - $1,799 (£1 085.50)
£613.50 right off the bat, but we get to choose no anti-virus on the machine. Wow that is so worth £600. [/rant] -

Yes, Dell is either making a big mistake with "outside of US pricing" or they are just greedy as **** and are trying to sell low to their home town americans and make up the rest by ripping off all the other countries, I had a system spec'ed out from the US dell site, dual 260M's 1920x1200, the rest stock, came to 2299, with exchange to canadian came to 2491 so i figured, nice when they start selling it on the dell.ca site ill be getting one for that price +tax, well i was sadly mistaken, they are charging 2199 base price in canadian funds, plus over pricing the individual parts, so i now have to pay over 400 dollars more on the exact same spec's, ****en unreal, im seriously hoping dell will fix the prices, because i just cant afford that 400 extra, with that and the tax included it is going to cost me 3100 CAD. If im going to buy this im not getting a single card which performs approximately 10% better than the one i currently have in my current laptop i will need 2 to make it worth while.. -
i totally agree! if u've seen my previous posts, in the UK we could pay WAY more than £1000 compared to the US depending on the system config. im soo pissed off!
-
Worse here in Germany - starting price of 1999 Euros ($2845.04) !!! Anyway, the cheapest CPU option they have displayed is quadcore 2.0 GHz. Maybe they dont have the 8600 / 8700 yet! The only dual cores offered are the more expensive t9xxx ones. Looks like they released the model before the complete configurable components are available and the shipping dates are too distant. -
400 Canadian dollar is a far cry from 1300 UK Pounds penalty UK buyers have to pay!! you are actually quite "lucky".
-
At least you Europeans don't have to pay $2.50 a gallon for gas!...oh wait never mind. Hope you guys at least get paid more.

Yes to you im lucky, but to me im still SOL, i hope dell smartens up and does something positive about this, or their sales abroad of this particular model will become stagnant.
