yes and yes....although the flash BIOS may take time for people to figure it out.

the M17 OCZ was flash-able, and since the AW unit was based on the same platform you could flash them as well.

just remember you will need to re-flash to original or most recent BIOS when returning to the company.

Silver wouldn't show scratches as much but with black it's easier to get some paint and cover them.

If you overclock the 260s in SLI, you guys think it could beat a pair of 4870s?

From what I understand the silver is a mirror finish, but the black has the same rubberized finish as the previous M17x--which also resist fingerprints!

    Wrong!

Both are just anodized aluminum - no polishing, rubber, etc.

Heh i assume if the 4870s are put on the m17x like expected with DDR5 they would blow the 260s in SLI out of the water. While matching or exceeding the 280s?

they problem with the 4870s mobile is the drivers and software support. thats all.

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

and if you the link they tested the 4870s mobile with ddr5. gtx280s are a little higher.

This is a premium priced rig. For the claim it makes, and the capabilities it's suppose to have, he has every right to expect it to be able to do what any other premium priced laptop can do...and more!

Gaming rig notwithstanding, what's wrong with expecting an computer to able to multitask? After all, isn't that the point?

BIOS overclocking is only available for Extreme CPUs because the multipliers are unlocked on the CPU itself. You can't BIOS overclock a non-extreme chip on any system regardless if it allows for multiplier overclocking or not.

You can overclock non-extreme CPUs using software like SetFSB, or on machines like the MSI and ASUS which have proprietary overclocking apps.

I'm tempted to buy this. Any news on overclocking abilities with QX9300? I wish there was a review out on the cooling system and what this notebook can do when pushed to extremes.

Kind of pissed off now, after half an hour with someone in CS we got disconnected (her side), while she was working on the order. 2nd one asking about student discounts, she ignored my whole question and kept asking me for my phone number to "tell me when a low price will be available"

Now, I can't get on AW or Dell CS chat because of "Error 99999"

LOL, the little country boy got quite a mouth on him; and I can't help but admit he did manage to get my dander up. Nevertheless, and in all fairness, he made more than just a few points for Mac. Pound for pound, the Macbook Pro does have it's advantages over AW even though they're not technically direct competitors.

nice huey. Also he didn't realize that the hard drive on the alienware he selected to compare was 5400 RPM vs the alienware 7200RPM. to upgrade the apple to 7200 RPM it would cost another 50$. Also..he forgot to upgrade the processor you commented on in his conclusion. SO he is 350$ short in his comparison.

Ok lol, I'm going to make a video the same way, and break it down for them... I'm not saying Alienware is better for their purposes, but I'll explain why it has such hype, and is more powerful per price point.

hey guys, i am trying to configure an m17x with the code "6F978-DKCCQTI" (without quotes) given by whizzo in the original post in this thread. It is generating a coupon error. Is it a reserved/student coupon or is it expired or what?

6F978-DKCCQTI is an evalue code that gets you to a specific config of the M17x. If you enter it into the search bar on the Dell website it will take you to that laptop deal.

K this country hick is retarded

Point 1 I noticed. Yea its 300 to upgrade from a 2.66 to a 2.93 for apple. Now AW comes with a 2.4 not a 2.66 so no crap its gonna cost more to upgrade from a lower end processor.

Point 2 he never upgrades the processor so its actually a 600 dollar difference not a 300 dollar difference

Point 3 if he would of upgraded both to 8gb of ram it would than be an 875 dollar difference.

Point 4 he upgrades to vista ultimate which is what another 150 when home premium is really all you need but mac osx does have many features so I guess it's fair to upgrade it. Still I'd rather get no os and pirate mine for free but hey thats just me ( yea yea pirating is wrong blah blah blah)

The only thing I will give him that he said was right was that the battery life is better on a macbook pro. Now 8 hours is the max and most likely you will get more like 6 hours which is still much better. Only thing is this laptop wasn't built for portability and battery life it was built as a desktop replacement that is gonna be docked 95% of it's life (Atleast for me).

So he can have fun with his way less powerful macbook pro for +875. or if you count home premium instead of ultimate thats +1025 now

You'd be wasting your time. AW fan are too esoteric a group that most people wouldn't understand. In addition, there's just no way you're going to convince a general audience that a laptop with the weight and dimensions of the M17x is a better buy than a sleek Macbook Pro. There's just too much overkill that most people don't need...or want.

Besides, there's just no way around the question of support (where Macs set the stand) or batter life, which sadly, is far superior.

Never mind looks like the deal didn't last long. Technet is a service provided by Microsoft that gives a few things including any Microsoft software you want for "testing purposes".
