IPS was always just a rumor with 0 back/source. Anyone familiar with what is out there should realize the chance of getting one is pretty slim after all.

Though I still hope they can push it out and promote some competition.

I had just about decided on a 17" HP Elitebook in order to get an IPS display in a notebook with a decent build, so I was very happy when I saw the rumors about the new M18x having an IPS display. But if it's not IPS on the new M18x, that's a hard no-buy for me.

If I were in the market for a new machine, it would also deter me a fair bit. I don't see the point in putting an IPS panel in the 14x and not the larger screens. Even if the 18x doesnt get IPS, there is no excuse for it NOT to be offered on the 17x as there are plenty of 17" IPS panel manufacturers out there....

Looks like I still gotta wait to see full specs on M17x and M18x, 4 SSD's in m17x sounds tempting. I hope we have dual msata and 4x 2.5" slots in M18xR3, that will be awesome, dual boot msata for os and 4x 1TB for storage.

    Nothing on Alienware-Down-Under website.

Sure, I'll try and make a note of everything I see regarding them. It's not the most graphically demanding game, but I believe one of the titles they are demoing on the new Alienware machines will be the new MMO, WildStar, which I am excited to play, as some of my former grad school classmates are devs on that game. Will certainly give my impressions of how whatever games they're showing run on the new hardware =)

I am going to be there Wednesday and Thursday this week.

I'm looking forward to the 4GB of video memory on the 780m and I hope that there will not be any form of GPU gimping like on the Dell version GTX 680m (never really affected the average user but for modders it was a disappointment).

Well I may just decide to upgrade. I think it has features, GPUs and is an overall time to upgrade from my R1 with 580Mm SLI. I got a good two years out of it. However, I think I am going to keep the R1, switch to the integrated GPU and use this for most of my web surfing and vid/music downloading. There are features aesthetically that I find nice and this has been a rock solid computer for me. It's too hard to let this one go. Maybe I will start a nice collection and stop selling all my computers to mitigate upgrade costs :)

"With rich, vibrant colors and wide viewing angles, your games will look their best indoors and out on an optional 14" antiglare, IPS Full HD screen, which ensures consistent, accurate color from all angles along with better brightness, higher contrast and a larger color gamut. The new optional IPS panel delivers a 75 percent higher contrast ration, 60 percent greater color gamut and is 7 percent lighter in weight than the standard panel."

Found on the Alienware India site for the m14!! Looks awesome either I'm getting my self this bad boy upgraded or the new razer blade.

So the AW 17 has a "True Life" 3D display and the regular FHD one is "anti-glare. If the 3D display is IPS...that would seal the deal for me :p

17 negatives (so far, still rumours, etc.)

2.0 speaker config. vs. 2.1 in the 14 (sub-woofer doesn't necessarily mean better audio, but still, usually a decent indication)
TN Panel (hoping this is just incomplete specs listing or something)
Trackpad (I assume light can be turned off. Would be nifty if it would light only where your finger was)

Looks very nice otherwise. Will depend a lot on price.

The Specs sheet says "Exterior Chassis: Materials Anodized Aluminum Magnesium Alloy"

Heres hoping that the keyboard and sides are just painted black and are not plastic.

It says that the memory DDR3L. Does that mean that it is only compatible with DDR3L or will we be able to use 1.5v memory? Is DDR3L any better?

It's basically the same, it just runs at 1.35V vs. 1.5 standard. The timings are slightly slower I think, but it won't be anything remotely noticeable, so you're just gaining battery life.

I thought that you had counted 17 problems at first.

Note that the HD 8970m and other wi-fi card options are not listed, and that the person who typed up the specification page bothered to mention that the screens are TN. The specifications page is often updated.

If Dell are going to use the same kind of "lo-vo" ram as Kingston: Hyperx Lovo memory | Kingston it seems that there is no performance loss....of course, if you were wanting to overclock your memory, that might not be as rewarding as the normal 1.5v stuff.

What makes me laugh about lo-vo is slapping it in an Alienware, when Kingston's write up from the above link clearly states:

Damn "tree-hugging" crap LOL - in all honesty, how many people buy an Alienware to be and "eco-geek"......

Give her a nudge at 4am, tell her to make some toast while she's brewing up..... :D

Ah cool, wasn't sure. Very true RE OCing (for what little it matters :p)

Going to wait until I can see some hands-on video I think. A lot of what I'm on the fence about can only be answered that way: audio quality, trackpad lighting, fan noise, etc.

But imagine that m14x with a 1080P IPS screen and 765GPU... What a failure! They didn't want to ditch that dvd-rom no matter what everyone said; my only option remains for the m17x. I am not very impressed of the look, its not bad at all but nothing to 'put down' the current generation...

Razer Blade it is I guess

M14 is bulky and heavy, not to mentioned the flashy silver color and the gimmicky lights on the lid and side, no way I would use it in public.

Glad to see the AW laptops get the IPS, hopefully the new 18" will have a display that is the best of the best, with full AdobeRGB gamut, although I'm guessing it's just the same 18.4" they use in the Dell tablet.

The new design is ok, mostly it just sucks that the speaker grilles look so lame compared to the M18x, the rest is cool.

If they are thinner, lighter, more powerful, and run cooler, then it's good.

New, uglier design AND: Just as damned thick and clunky as before.

Kudos for going back to metal, but that 14" unit shouldn't be 2 inches thick and bulky.

Another thing I have noticed: the old m17x has 4.26 Kg when the new one has 4.15 Kg. Not much difference but it is to be notice that, though they have used aluminum mixed with plastic and magnesium it will still be a bit lighter than the previous generation.

I dunno about the rest of you, but I really liked the speaker grills... If I've said it once I've said it a thousand times: The R1/R2 was the best thing to come out of the Alienware design team, and it showed.

I miss having a silver sports car sitting on my desk. Damn aliens.

This. A million times. I know it sounds silly, but the very first thing that hit me about the 18xR1 was the sleek, smooth front grille. Great design, futuristic, sexy....and now....totally plastic-looing, blocky, Clevo-esque type design.....yuk.

The new range are fully being offered here in Japan now. None of them have any AMD options yet. The m18x has 780m SLI, 770m SLI, 765m SLI as available configurations.

Razer Blade (with the same GTX765) surely satisfy my cravings, besides being lighter and elegant. But it is very expensive.

Don't confuse, i'm a happy m14x R1 owner. But i expected more from this generation, not only cosmetic changes.
