So that's why the 15x was dropped...

Gonna explain why I've been using AW 1X instead of M1Xx, it's because I haven't seen in any promos so I'm speculating that they'll drop that naming scheme.
Anyways image a decked out AW 14 with a i7 4930mx, GTX 780m, IPS 2560x1440 diplay, 1TB SSD storage, 256GB msata boot and 2133Mhz ram.
I'll probably still go for the 17 incher though. Haswell supports up to 6 SATA III drives soall drives will be opened up to RAID. I'm thinking of getting 3 SSDs for the bays (ODD included) and another similar spec mSATA SSD. 4x RAID 0 or RAID 1+0/0+1. -
I'd far sooner go RAID 10 than 0, unless of course you're backing up to a secondary location or something.
The mSATA drive is actually a bad choice. If you go with that, you're stuck using 480GB M500s everywhere, where-as if you use only the HDD and ODD bays, you can use 3x960GB drives. -
With the new higher res video, I thought I would provide some better quality screenshots.
You can see the keyboard a lot better, it looks like we will only have AlienFX lighting on the letters on the keys; no more square-border lights on the keys anymore.
Also, I don't see a second HDMI port (i.e. HDMI-IN) on the M18xR3. Also there is no extra 3.5mm stereo port.
*EDIT - Removed* -
What makes you think that AW will even give the option for such a high resolution screen, in a m14x, let alone the m17x and m18x? It will hugely increase the price of the laptops, and I don't think they will give the option for at least another 1-2 years. Also gaming with a mobile gpu at that resolution, even though they have seemed to advance tremendously is pushing it. You would be looking at much lower frame rates.
If one was so hooked up on playing at such a high resolution, on such a small screen, it would just be better to use an external monitor.
Also like somebody said above, they dropped the m15x as it was affecting the m17x sales. I don't think they will offer the m14x with the most powerful gpus and it wouldn't go well with the line up, making it harder for people to justify the price of the more expensive M17x, and M18x . They wouldn't want to loose money by giving people the option of a cheaper laptop with the top gpu, the current m14x is a good £400 cheaper than the m17x! -
looks like their using the front as an actual intake? if so this would be quite some news as cooling should be excellent throughout the chassis
that green light strip around the side and alien head eye in green looks really cool. Im a sucker for ott stuff like this. Subtle, high tech, classy.... has been done to death, I want ostentatious, you don't buy a Lamborghini to look like a Honda (no offense, they are the technical but sensible looking things in my analogy
)
-
The new design is bland and corporate friendly but that is not why I got AW. I am very happy with my M18xR2 and will stay with this for at least the next few years. I am sure the machines will be engineered well and perform amazing. I want my "Alienware" to look alien..
-
Don't think they are, if you look at the video, they look like front speakers for sure. Can't see speakers anywhere else on the laptop, doesn't seem like they're using the area above the keyboard for speakers.
Also it wouldn't really be all that beneficial? Intakes cooling the gpu + cpu would surely be better, since they're the main heat producers. Heatsinks would make sure everything else is cool. -
more air is always better. they could create a Y pipe channel for it to flow onto the ram and give the cpu and gpu some extra convection. still no great shakes if it isnt.
also (omen123) i dont think they look bland at all. we need to see some better UHD shots from different angles in real world situations -
Never said they look bland. That was the guy above.
-
ah this is sad, do not like the design one bit. tbh I think even clevo looks better than new m18x lol
however, whats important is the inside. with faulty chipset revision 1 got usb 3.0 issues so wont be getting it, until revision 2 comes out several months later with possibilities of 4960mx then I'll start thinking about it then. full sata 6gbps and more HDD bay please!
uhh just noticed right side of M18x, no expresscard slot. didn't see the other side but highly doubt expresscard slot and thunderbolt is there.. this is garbage. -
I'm really considering buying an M18x R2 right now before they're taken down for good... this new design just seems like a step in the wrong direction. By the time we know more about the internals and extra features, it will most likely be too late to have a choice between the new or the old. I hate to buy "old" tech now though when a new system is being released. I just want everything the M18x has now, but more power and a higher quality screen. :/
-
I think the new systems will be great though we always manage to find something that we do not like. Don't get me wrong, I love my m18xr2 and I will definitely keep it for few years more (unless takes a crap and dell / alienware provides a free upgrade, ofcourse chances are to none);
As per the m14x, you guys will never see a mxm slot on that, there is no extra vent there (can be noticeable on the pictures); no extra vent / no extra fan / more cooling space with the grill at the back / integrated gpu. This is all about marketing, why will Dell / Alienware be so innocent to put an mxm slot there and sell this system for such a big difference in price + m17x will really go down on sale.
I hate the cooling system on their m14x r1 & r2 and I am sure there will be not much different in this revision. I will never buy it again. If you try to do an upgrade on the CPU or you buy it from a third 'company' and they will upgrade your CPU to an MX, then think about getting an mobile air condition as well. Did you guys look at the m14x forum? What a disaster, really. I do not see many people there saying anything nice about it and everyone has a problem with it.
I am just going to buy the m17xr4 for the fun of it (unless it is heavier then the previous generation). -
It would be funny if all of these pictures and rumors were fake.
-
You mean the r5? The r4 is lighter than the r3.
-
Yes, you got the point... How much lighter? I was happy with the R3, big mistake because I sold it...
-
I think it's 0.7kg lighter. You can just quickly search if you want to double check
-
Hey guys, I ordered a M18x r2 back on April 19th and still waiting, but nbd. Question I have is, other than glare are there any other downsides to a glossy screen? Any upsides? And can I buy a screen protector or something to make it more matte? Just wondering if I should cancel and wait for the new ones, although I prefer the old design to the supposed new one...you don't buy a sports car just for power...you buy it for looks too, so it needs to look like a sports car
-
This wait is killing me. We all know the performance increase is worth the upgrade, and I'm actually kinda glad that Alienware is returning to its older designs (big fan of the old Aurora systems). However, some of these changes have me wishing I had ordered the r4. First, I really hope some semblance of the current AlienFX lighting still exists. From the pictures, there are clearly some lights, but not nearly the customization that used to exist. Also, what happened to the 16:10 rumors? My first laptop was 1920x1200, and I've been living at 1366x768 for too long. Overall, progress is progress, but I hope (for Dell's sake) that this is going in the right direction. I guess we'll find out next week.
-
I wonder if the palm rest (i.e. everything that is black) is also going to be aluminum?
-
probably not
-
I quite like the look of them, will deffo be looking at them once they go live on dell order page. I hope they do offer the 770M SLI as a cheaper SLI option.
-
Looks like only the shell is aluminium, and that is probably a good thing. As much as plastic may not look good, it stands up to palms pretty well. I've borrowed a MacBook for a job, and by the time I was done, I had basically ground dirt into the casing. The moist towel I used to clean it came out more or less black.
Sorry for the double post, but this is an interesting point. As far as I know, SLI doesn't really give you any help beyond spreading the jobs across the two cards. From what I've read, single higher-clock cards are more effective at this point. Will be interesting to see if GPU Boost 2.0 might change that. -
Am I the only one who thinks the old design looks way nicer? I mean the aluminum is definitely a nice upgrade over the plastic composite chassis. Not a fan of the new keyboard, lighting, and case design though.
-
I love it, count me in, one more time dell!!!
-
I've been wondering the same thing hopefully the m18 retains full aluminum at least we will see
-
From the pictures the sides are more plastic then aluminum. One of the reasons I went with the M18x is for the beautiful and sturdy aluminum body. The front is more boxy compared to the previous design. When I put my M18x anywhere, it commands attention. Not once have I been told it was ugly. They said it looks like a super computer and that to me is the point. It should look super and the new design looks cheaper from these pics. I would like to see these things live before I make a final judgement. I was hoping for a higher res screen and a body that looked futuristic. I was also hoping for something thinner. Everything is getting thinner these days and I wanted dell to be innovative and find a way to cool an extreme processor and 780m effectively. We shall see in a few days but I expected more...
-
I just bought my M17x R4 after years of struggling and now I have to deal with it! Oh, God!
-
I too hope the new m18x is full aluminum as far as styling goes I'm gonna go out on a limb and say if this new chassis is based on a car i bet its european one
-
Not sure if this has been shared, but the Alienware site has a teaser up for the new lineup coming this month. We're one week away!

A very valid point, and thanks for pointing out what I completely missed. The sides DO look plastic, not metal like the current M18xR2 and the M18x R1, which both had complete "wrap around" metal casing, top sides, bottom (apart from the bottom plastic access panel). The current images of the new M18x indicates a metal lid.....plastic sides....so will it have a plastic underside too? - if so, I'm even more put off as I loved the "tank-like" feel of past M18x's -
I really like the build of the r4. The rubber like material durable, also has a soft feel to it, doesn't have a plastic feel, apart from the speaker covers or the touchpad.
The r5 seems to use the same material on the inside too. The aluminium build looks to be just on the outside of the laptop. -
OMG thanks. Videos added to the OP -
Those high-res pics look sexy, don't they? (On the Alienware.com official site.) Damn... I'm excited.
-
It appears that the upcoming notebooks share a lot of the design you find on the newest X51-R2.
The dark finish, the aluminum, the holes on the aluminum.
So when they said in the teaser video that the new design represent the future for Alienware, I think this is the way they are going. Sort of like alien technology which is very advanced. Futuristic, clean and not flashy like before
I like the direction they are heading
-
Yeah, it would appear so. I'm so glad that everything is Aluminum.
-
Added to calendar. Monday is looking pretty busy - Microsoft, WWDC, Sony, Ubisoft, EA, now this in the evening. I'll be in my bunk.
-
Just applied for a credit card.
-
I just sold my notebook so I`m settled

Those guys over at Dell certainly know how to tease......clockwatchers, beware of the link below as it could cause distress

Well I'm just gonna say that thank God I'm building a R1/R2 I don't like the new look at all. I prefer my M17 R1 a thousand times. But its good to see that its landing pretty soon, more parts for me and at better prices

Alienware, what's next?
The hexagon shaped holes are one of the Alienware signatures present on many older models (desktops and notebooks). -

Kindey auction, anyone? .... spare kidney, one careful owner....
-
Yes but not as apparant as maybe now. Plus combined with this new clean look, its very different in my eyes.
You gotta sell the notebook NOW man. Not wait til Dell have officially announced the new series with GTX 780M. Then everyone will think "Meh, I don`t want to buy that old tech" or "Its old tech, lower the price a bit will ya?!"
-
As long as I don't have to pay for shipping and handling...
Also I wonder what kind of RAM it will ship with. I hope they abandon that generic Dell stuff in favor of some CL11 sticks. -
ThatOldGuy Notebook Virtuoso
Most kidney's don't ship with RAM or any electronics whatsoever... And Dell denies all claims of shipping bodyparts
Most likely to continue shipping generic dell Ram (I think it used to be Samsung rebrand) -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Hmmm. Bodyparts might be a restricted item, although veg and fruit seem to be acceptable - I've had my fair share of "lemon's" from Dell in the past....
As for the ram, it's generally Samsung or Hynix modules. -
meh (as they say)
-
I have a feeling (I always have this feeling with Dell) that some Corsair sticks will be arriving shortly after my purchase, along with one of those beautiful Samsung 840s.
