Something I noticed so far: Most existing Alienware owners and enthusiasts are dissatisfied with the new look or at best on the sidelines. However, Clevo/MSI owners seem to favor the new look because it more closely resembles a bast@rdized MSI/Clevo design. This may end up backfiring on Dell if they lose their core enthusiast group because out of gaming notebook makers, they're the largest so it doesn't make sense to cater to a smaller base of customers. Will see how this all plays out once people start receiving their orders but based on the pics and now high res video, I'm just as unimpressed as ever.

As someone who is new to Alienware (but not to computers) the new look strikes me as a next step. I think it's similar to what Microsoft is doing with Windows, trying to appeal to a new user base by "simplifying" the UI. The next generation of Alienware is sleeker and lighter thanks to the aluminium shell. It's getting a pretty big performance boost with Intel's 4000 series processors and the m14x should get a noticeable battery life improvement with the 4600 series IGP. Of course, GPU Boost 2.0 in the GTX 700's is nothing to laugh at either. Yes, IPS panels have their drawbacks, but it is what the larger consumer base asked for. One thing will remain - Alienware will continue to produce the highest quality products. Overall, I'm glad that Alienware is taking a chance with the new design (this is the same kind of conversation I remember having about the unibody MacBooks - I wasn't a fan, and I'm still not an Apple fan, but hell, those aluminium shells do look good).

Yeah and that worked out REALLY well for MS with Windows 8 didn't it? Alienware has had aluminum shells for its M17x(R1/R2)/M18x line since Dell bought them out, this is nothing new. And seriously, GPU Boost 2.0? No offense but you should stick to Macbooks.

In time, all will be well. It's too late to turn back now: forward is the only way through. Complaining and speculating about Dell's new direction does nothing. I'm sure they've analyzed every possible outcome and are prepared to face whatever is to come.

For every current Alienware owner, there are hundreds, if not thousands of potential owners in the midst. This refresh is targeting both. And because of this, their chance of success is much greater than failure.

Waiting from some reviews where we can see some higher res images, but the look is starting to grow on me. Still looks miles ahead of the g750 and the other laptop makers.

As much as I didn't like the new reveal of the AW, I have been very underwhelmed by the new MSI and Sagers...The MSI is basically the same body as last year, and the Sagers have gotten uglier, and bigger/fatter somehow...Maybe they are going for better cooling, but a 9 pound and 2 inch thick 17" model, is not very attractive.

I wonder what options they'll have screen-wise for the M18x....I really love the body style of the M18xR2, but the screen isn't that great, IMO...Anyone have any details yet on what the screen options will be?

Do you think there is anyway they are bringing back the RGBLED?? That would make it a must purchase for me. I miss the RGBLED from my M17xR2

I should have clarified - no Microsoft's ploy did not work out well - I do, and probably always will believe that the classic desktop is the way to go. Metro is fine for tablets and phones, but if you have a mouse and keyboard, why would you ever need something like that? I do think that GPU Boost will be a welcome edition. The current generation of Nvidia mobile cards do not automatically clock, which is fine if you don't need them to, but have you seen the numbers on the 780? I'll buy whatever marketing lingo Nvidia wants if they can deliver that kind of upgrade. And just as an aside, I was asked why I didn't want the Retina MacBook and my answer was this: I have been waiting for a long time to buy a high performance computer, and it just so happens that I have no choice but to buy a laptop. Apple computers are not what I consider "high performance." (I think almost everyone can agree on that)

100% agree. With corporate restructuring in Dell's future, this design makes perfect sense. Alienware, come June 10th, you have my purchase, for now, I wait.

Yes I know all about GPU Boost, its garbage. Well its good for noobs that don't know their way around a PC I guess, but for the enthusiast it sucks.

why would that be bad? at least you get to upgrade if the mobo and other part fits lol
from what I can see, just as J.dre said Dell wants to target new customers, from the looks of taking out expresscard, cheaper production too also makes more money I'd assume they figure not many people uses it =/ which still beats hell out of me as I abuse my expresscard slot with a lot of things, SSD, USB 3, bluetooth/wifi.

also a reason to change is making us end user to upgrade for good, not just swaping out a motherboard and other pieces to get a custom upgrade but to completely fork out 5k+ to get a new computer. something like a cheap GPU and CPU upgrade and having to spend this much is unreal, not interested in only 10-15% GPU/CPU upgrade lol

The New Alienware series will be powered by the 4th generation Intel core processors code named haswell. This one claims to be the most optimized power consuming Intel processors of all the time. moreover they include Intel HD 4600 graphics which requires less rendering times.

They claim to have 50% of more battery life for laptops.
    So don't worry.
Alienware has already started to supply 4th generation Intel processors, already in US.

Maximum power draw from the CPU: 57 watts (Though more likely 47, 14x won't get the extreme chips)
Maximum power draw from the GPU: ~130 watts (Though again probably closer to 80, 14x probably won't get the 780m)

I'm not thinking that the processor will be determining gaming battery life. Battery life on the IGP, maybe - but even then the screen idle power dwarfs the difference between Ivy and Haswell. Maybe 20% increase in H264 playback time, 25% in web browsing - but little to nothing in games.

actually, windows 8 isnt all that bad, it had issues and with enough tweaking it'll just be the same with windows 7 but better. I still remember how i went from XP to vista, and vista to 7 and hated every bit of the transition myself and now is time from 7 to 8. I do not like the new design, new keyboard and omit of the expresscard but surely people will get around that.

See the underlined portions: It's not THAT bad and needs tweaking, 'nuff said :D Besides, see here: Windows 8 blamed as PC sales slide - Washington Post

The fact that Windows 8 Blue and MS's backpedaling are proof that Windows 8 is a miserable failure. So using that as an example of success is laughable.

more like people as they grow older are afraid of change, or just simply too lazy and I do not blame you. tweaks are of my choice, and is one thing Im doing to try to get it similar to XP which is preventing the change. but like it or not, windows 8 got some really good function windows 7 doesnt have cause I have used both, and am now using server 2012 which is based off 8, and is superior than 8 just as 8 was superior than 7.

ps. i dont see you underlining me saying how i tweaked xp/vista when moving to 7 =/

anyway, my point is new AW maybe ugly but it may also have nice features, although i seriously doubt it at this point pretty sure few things were removed to make more money. and obviously unlike windows 8 which was cheap to upgrade, base config for new AW for 18 inch is at least 2k.. and not worth getting if its slower than my ivy bridge so yea, forking out 5-6 grand doesnt look like its possible, for a lot of us.

Minuses: New lighted scheme (hopefully they can be turned off like currently)

More to be determined, but eyes on release!

I must say I always wanted an Alienware but always got scared off because of 1 factor: it wasn't the 'special looks' or even the price, but the glossy screen that was awfull imo (even when there was that epic rgbled screen). Now it seems they finally offer a matte screen as standard. I'm sure that the older gamers among us know how bad pc gaming is for your eyesight, especially on a glossy screen.
Lets hope the m17x with an nvidia gtx780m wil not cost 2500 dollars/euros like the Asus g750.

I hope Dell has a better plan than that. I can tell from the amount of people on the other forums, particularly Sager/Clevo and MSI, who do not know about or understand Alienware's advantages and claim that buyers just pay for the name, that such a scheme cannot end well.

I hate to say it but I don't see getting an Alienware M17 specd the same as the G750 any cheaper :( I'm hoping the same thing but a M17x R4 spec with a 680m before the Haswell and the 780m ran you more :(

Supposedly the Haswelll chips were supposed to be a lot cheaper to make than Ivy Bridge, and thus the laptops and upgrades would be cheaper, but I don't see this in what has already been released. I may wait till a reseller like XoticPc gets them for the market price upgrades instead of the Dell premium. That or buy a base model and upgrade myself, depending on how the insides are engineered.

Many of the people saying it looks bad/ugly who end up ordering anyhow will get the new machine, take it out of the box and go "OMG OMG OMG this is amazing !!! You have to see it in person to believe it".

There is going to be TONS of that going on i can promise you no matter how many people say they hate it right now. This has happened so many times in the past on so many laptops i have owned it feels like Deja vu all over again.

So many things factor in to a nice PC aside from just the pictures we see.

So we have to wait and see. The new Alienware style has grown on me fast though i can say that for sure .

Someone said people do not like change especially as we get older and that is it in nutshell, but how many things in our lives have changed that we eventually embraced and grew to love ?. I can think of many of them.

This will be no different and will be a resounding success for Alienware whether some of us veterans like it or not.

You're probably bang on the money there, Quad. Gotta say, it's still not growing on me yet though.... :p - maybe IPS screen review and in-depth hig res. pictures from every conceivable angle will help me out with my my "old-man-not-likey-likey-change" mentality......(side note to self: be more open-minded, as closed minds are not conducive to change being a good thing ;))

Methinks you have stumbled into the wrong sub-forum - go buy an MSI and quit the trolling - or at least be constructive.

I am sure there will be other colors as i do not see Alienware changing to a single color scheme after all this time.

They may even return to more color options like we had in the past since they have returned to Aluminum.

I can see Red,Silver and Black being offered again if i were a betting man.

Color choices are a good thing and i am sure they know that .

"Alienware is overpriced" says the person who has not owned and experience what Alienware has to offer. I Used be be like you, I bought an Alienware and it turned that stupid assumption upside down. All I have to say is enjoy your MSI while we enjoy our overpriced machine. :D

Personally, I've found my laptop to be extremely durable, even (largely) surviving a 6ft drop onto it's side. ("Largely" meaning the occupied headphone jack did not survive, but I can't blame them for that)
And the warranty covered that bit. As for price, well, you get what you pay for - and you get quite a lot with one of these things.

Or better yet, Aluminum/ Alien Red/ Space Black/ Gold/ Neon Green/ Deep Blue (In other words offer a large variety of colors)

And while it might require licensing, it would be interesting to have a nVidia Green/ AMD Red option. (There are specific color codes for those product lines)

How was I trolling? I just think that Alienware is overpriced as hell. What's the problem with that? Methinks you are a way too big Alienware fanboy that can't take it when someone critices their oh-so-mighty-glorious Alienware.

    Thanks, will do.

Ye, but personaly I still think you pay way too much for Alienware. Anyways, I rest my case here.

They stopped offering anything like that before I got my M18X. You can expect the mousepad maybe.

I luckily kept my felt cover, mousepad and hat when I returned my M18x. They never said a word, though with the troubles I had with my system I think I earned those. :)

well the design is definitely growing on me, aside from the glowing t-pad, i think its about time i upgrade my lappy, but i might have to visit tiger direct and see it in person before i buy one, as i am considering a precision instead since i do most of my game on the d.t. nowadays, and i need a matte screen, since the screen covers aren't cutting it for me

Meh, you just trolled yourself all over again, but this time, in better style....Do yourself a favour and take Katalin's advice, unless you would prefer if we head on over to the MSI sub-forum and start calling your machines "underpriced, underperforming, plastic monstrosities. Of course, no offence intended. :) (and to be honest, I've got better things to do than do that, but you get the idea, right?)

No doubt this will happen though I'm almost certain my opinion won't change. We'll see though.

I like the design. I intend on going the MSI route and picking up a GT60 (the m14x is too small for me, and the m17x is too big), but will give credit to Alienware for making a more mature design IMO. The previous generations were too "gamerish" for my taste.
