I have just noticed that the high-res teaser gallery pics on the official Alienware.com website aren't all available to zoom in except for the first two, yet if you go on the Alienware. co.uk website they are all available to open? Must be a mistake on their part, but the pictures look very good, although I do struggle to figure out where which part of the laptop some of the pics belong to.

The sharp edges and thin screw holes make me think so -
Any idea what the Haswell equivalents for 3630/3740/3820/3940 are?
Also, what is with the NVidia-Only configuration on dell.com I'm trying to build an m18x but it does not give me any AMD options :-? -
something along the line 3 pipe to 4 pipe heatsink on the CPU/GPUs, stronger and quieter fans, or the three heatsinks became one giant one or two heatsinks, something of g74sx design far superior cooling imo. storage bay improves yet againcan never have too much of those especially with all sata 6gbps. few other things like mini pcie ports all became msata ports, better hardware raid allows 3to 4 drives raid and better usb 3 controller etc etc.
ps one thing I wanted to mention though disappointed Dell didnt take up on water cooling done by Asetek solution, guess it was too much of a trouble to have it covered under accidental warranty so they left AW as it is. would love to see some 5+ ghz overclock in the beast.
may go for clevo's "server cpu in a laptop" model if AW stays ugly the way it is for next 3 years. -
Until we really see the official release all of this is just speculation, which I admit it's fun. It's only human discussing and sharing what we would like to see or not in a new M1x series. What I don't get is how several people decided that new new look is so ugly and ordinary to make that alone a main reason for dismissing even the idea of getting a new M18x.
I know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and what we decide that looks nice or not is mainly subjective. The new chassis for some is ugly for other is gorgeous and futuristic. I personally like changes (when they try to innovate, improve or challenge, as in this 'case' pun not intended). I am always suspicious of the "good old days" take on life, since in my opinion it displays one's resistance toward change, which in life and many other things it's unavoidable. Don't get me wrong, I love my M18x r2. It has great looks and feel, unmatched quality built, and outstanding performance. However, I am ready for a change that doesn't compromise quality and performance, and I don't find the new looks nearly as boring, plain, or ugly as it's been stated here over and over. Yet, as I mentioned above, that's just matter of personal taste.
I feel that the new M18x will show amazing performance and quality, probably better than, and improved from, what we have now. Many posts here claim that the step in the new direction is a step backward, while to me it's just the opposite. If we saw a new notebook made mostly of black glossy plastic it would have been a real step backward. But a having a case all in aluminum is definitely a step on the right direction for many reasons: look, feel, weight, heat dispersion, etc. Maybe for many the problem is that instead of having a black space or red case now we will have a dark grey one, and that must be for them a reason for dislike and dismiss the new models altogether. I find it both understandable and amusing. I even read about people complaining that having the power cord plug on the side were an actual defect. Gosh, if only my M18x r2 already had it on the side it would have made my life much easier. Again, it's a matter of personal preference and taste. For some it will be in the way, for others it will just give them more room and comfort.
I look forward to the official release, and if the new M18x will be amazing as it promises, after some time of adjustments, updates, and tweaking needed by newly released technology, I'd certainly consider selling my current one and get a new M18x. Just my two cents.
Cheers -
I don't know for you but I didn't see anything yet.
But I trust AW, i buy one notebook every three months (i know...). My 18x R2 with 7970m cfx has been flawless and i have been gaming tons of it.
I asked him to encode videos for days and nights for weeks in hot japanese summer: not a single crash. And i opened it many times, it s a great build.
The only thing i want is a better screen...and more power! But i m pretty sure this last point is no problem -
so no more 7970?? I'm not very keen on the new look, and have been looking for a good deal on a 7970cfx or 680m sli machine, R2 preferrably.
-
I agree and well said sir!
Some of the people complaining about the newer design and newer hardware are just feeeling threaten because it will soon replace their older models and I'm not saying everyone feels that way but i'm sure some are. -
I don't have anything against the 3 new lineups except the Ethernet port being on the right instead of the left.
-
I believe all in all we will start getting used with the look of those new beasts.
What concerns me more is, if they pay attention to what we are all complaining from the last 2 years: better screen, better cooling, AN EXCELLENT QUALITY CHECK sending out to the customers and so on.
All those petty things about looks I think we will be managing passing them, especially when we still get those flashy lights and a 'strange alien shape'... -
Looks like this guy needs to pocket some Cash and land himself a new m17x!
-
Not a big fan of the new design, i wish we can get the new hardware but in the old design !
-
I really like the new design. I think Alienware needed a redesign after using the same models for quite some time, but I kinda don't like the entire track pad being lit up. I would just disable it with alienx.

I dunno what to do. May just sell my alienware m18xr1 with its original gpu's, sell the gtx 680m's and just grab the m18xr3. Or do I sell the gtx 680m's and buy gtx 780m's for my r1 and call it a day. I'll be really pissed if they hold back on the sli gtx 780m like they are known to do but if i wait to sell the value goes down, Decisions decisions.

so frank, straight up - this defreshed notebook design doesn't look 'five years from now', let alone 'fifty/hundred years from now'...
here's the thing. it's got some nifty new lighting ideas that could be executed in most any oem's chassis if they so desired, and houses expected annual hardware updates from intel/nvidia/amd that consumers could have pretty much gotten within the existing lineup. meanwhile, your teams could be back at the drawing board bringing out something truly amazing and innovating (as the past couple years should've seemingly already yielded, beyond the obvious/return of aluminum?), which would leave the competition spending the next few years playing catch up. instead you've now left yourselves a sitting target in an already niche market segment, where the only thing left separating you is the chassis...
that's where your 'core' generally appears to be frustrated - not that dellienware didn't probably spend millions (as microsoft did with windows 8...) coming up with all this, but rather that this is all they could come up with? -
I'm not a huge fan of the new design; I like the way my R1 looks. I mean, I really, really like it, Nebula Red in aluminum is a beautiful thing. Know what else is beautiful, though? Playing RAGE with all effects turned to max in a resolution that I could only dream of when I bought my laptop back in 2009, and knowing I can turn Unreal Engine 4 and id Tech 5 into multicolored puree with the power at my disposal. No frame stutters here, people.
GTX780? Haswell processor? And you're bringing back the aluminum case?
Shut up and take my money. I'll get used to the new design while I'm drooling on the keys as I play. -
Anyone know why they stopped making a 15 inch? To me there is a big gap between the 14 and 17 inch.
-
Looking at the sheer unsightly thickness of the M14x I'd expect it to come equipped with a range of selectable GPUs up to the GTX 780M. No excuses this time, not when Razer can stick a GTX 765M into a paper thin 14 incher. -
i really dont know why you ppl dont like this design, like someone said earlier it may be due to you ppl feeling INSECURE about the fact that alienware changing, like a guy said earlier ppl like their laptops and think that other ppl like them too or something like that.
What exactly do u ppl want?
If u make a list [ THAT HAS AN END ] of what you want and compare it to what alienware's offering you will see you are getting more than enough
i am still confused about how you will swtich on this computer?
searching... searching...
anyone got more info? When do you think it will release? my R4 has been down for 2 weeks cuz they cant find a damn mother board! guess they are running out of parts for r4 so i will ask them to replace it 4 freedamn 5 more days of waiting n waiting n waiting .....
what is this thing? -

Someone posted that it may come with a 750M
hopefully we get more options.
Nothing has been confirmed yet so stand by until E3 for more juicy details . -

. I'm seriously thinking about getting one of these! The only thing that can sway me back in the direction of AW is raw power, they'd better go all guns blazing!
-
That would be a huge fail if it's only gt 750m and if it weighs the same as m14x r2 6.5lbs or more then it's even more fail. Razer has a freaking gtx 765m on a 4.1lb half inch machine and MSI GE40 has a gtx 760m on a one inch 4.5lb 14" laptop.
Let's hope Alienware/Dell delivers with the M14x R3 giving it a minimum of GTX 760m or better and a much better cooling with quieter and silent single fan or dual cooling and with hopefully a little lighter than the m14x r1/r2 around 5-5.5lb. -
M18x r2 is not available on japanese website now. It says sold out...

GT60 3k is the spiritual successor to the M15X IMO, I wonder if any 3-4k panels will be an option maybe later on down the line.

Could be in interesting upgrade from my M15X, first and only gaming laptop.
I like the video from Linus Tech Tips at Computech showing that laptop running 3 screens. Looks sooooo nice! -

Unlike the other MSI machines it can game as one display across all of those since they are all connected to the dGPU.

I'm curious to see if you can change the lighting/touch pad different colours in transitions, would be pretty unique to have your laptop changing colours all the way around inc the touch pad
